The Role of Teachers in Drug Abuse Prevention in Schools

No full text
This exploratory study is an attempt to investigate the work–the role of teachers in drug abuse prevention in schools. The drug is one of the forbidden item consumed by human. Nevertheless, students who are still too young got exposed to the drug. Having a good teacher will greatly prevent the students to abuse the drug. Teachers’ roles have resulted as the key factor for the prevention of the consumption of drug because students spend most of their quality time at school. This paper is intended to study the possibility of the existence of the role of teachers in drug prevention in schools in Malaysia. A mixed methods research design shall be deployed for the study. A conceptual framework with factors such as teaching competency, teachers' self-efficacy, the teaching-learning process in the classroom, and school environment

The Roles of Matrilineal System Towards Integrating Religious and Cultural Values in Minangkabau Community

This paper looks at one of the unique cultures of Indonesia, the Minangkabau, in West Sumatera Province. Minangkabau is known as one of the biggest cultures in the world practicing matrilineal system in its family. This system means that every child who is born follows his or her mother`s clan line. Matrilineal education integrates religious and cultural values to their children. According to this system, there are four central figures that have important roles in educating young generations of Minangkabau. They are Bundo Kanduang, Ninik Mamak, Alim Ulama, and Cadiak Pandai. The purpose of this paper is to explore the roles of these four central figures of Minangkabau in integrating religious and cultural values to the young generation. The data for this paper uses secondary data, namely the study of literature. Data analysis techniques in this study are three roots of reduction, presentation, and verification of data. Results show that each of the four central figures has different roles but they are united to integrate the education system of the Minangkabau community.</jats:p

PROJECT BASED LEARNING: A REVIEW OF LITERATURE ON ITS OUTCOMES AND IMPLEMENTATION ISSUES

Project-Based Learning is gaining popularity in development projects and pedagogic development. The objective of the use the PBL in a classroom is to give students a meaningful experience in learning. This paper will discuss the PBL based on constructivism theory and experiential theory were discussed to give the idea constraint to the use of the PBL. Furthermore, the study will also discuss the implementation of PBL. It is found that some studies have showed positive effect and also it may develop students’ critical thinking and learning attitudes. However, there are several issues regarding the implementation like students acknowledge that the knowledge of today's limited technology changes has prevented them from producing good design ideas.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Formation Process of Derived Words in Malay and Iban

The Study on the Formation Process of Derived Words in Malay and Iban is a bilingual research that aims to study the process of forming derived words in Malay and Iban while also discussing the differences that occur from the aspect of morphemes that form derived words for both languages. The method used is entirely a qualitative method by highlighting document analysis instruments and checklist forms. Some derived word lists are taken from the Kamus Dewan Edisi Keempat and Bup Sereba Reti. The data obtained is released in the form of a checklist table to display the comparison, especially the difference aspects of Malay and Iban derived words. In order to see the word formation process that takes place, Tatabahasa Dewan, Nahu Melayu Mutakhir and Iban Language Morphology are used as data sources. The findings state that all derived words with the same meaning in Malay Language and Iban Language are combined with different morphemes to form prefixes, suffixes and affixes. The word class transformation process based on Minimalist Theory also states that there are significant differences for derived words built in simple sentences. Malay does not go through the root word level for word production while Iban language can go through root words and base words. This study can establish a limitation between Malay Language and Bahasa Iban which have similarities in terms of language systems. It is hoped that this study will have an impact on language scholars as a stepping stone to continue other researches, especially studies in the form of comparisons between two languages that have correlations and kinship relationships.</p&gt

Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
