Non-surgical management of primary hyperparathyroidism in the aging population
No full textPrimary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is commonly observed in the aging population, and the average age at diagnosis has increased in the last 20 years. Parathyroidectomy, the only definitive cure for PHPT, is indicated in symptomatic and asymptomatic older PHPT patients with skeletal and renal disease. It is as effective in older patients as it is in younger patients. Nevertheless, older patients may present with comorbidities and greater frailty, leading to the possibility of more complications, higher morbidity and mortality after surgery. This review focuses on the non-surgical clinical management of PHPT in elderly patients. We also summarize the most recent literature regarding the pharmacological management of PHPT to reduce serum calcium levels, to improve bone mineral density or to do both in the aging population

No full textthe chemical composition of several specimens of the Mineralogical Museum of Florence was established usign optical and SEM microscopy and WDS microanalysis (EPMA). THe speciemens are attributed to chalcocite, djurleite, anilite on the basis of theier Cu/S ratio. Fe is both minor substituent for Cu and trace element, which allows the correct attribution of digenite Finally, Ag-bearing varieties of chalcocite, djurleite, and digenite are identified with Ag-content ranging up to 0.009 atoms per formula unit
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
