Sliding-mode control of bidirectional dc-dc converter for supercapacitor energy storage applications
A great interest in the last years has been paid in the literature to the application of supercapacitors in many existing or innovative systems. Bidirectional dc-dc converters chopper are intrinsic candidates to couple the supercapacitor devices to electric power systems. It might be very useful to adopt coupled-inductor configurations for increasing efficiency against high-voltage step-up ratio. In the paper, a sliding mode control technique is proposed in order to improve the performances of a certain dc-dc bidirectional converter topology. A numerical application is also performed with respect to a simple dc tramway system with a stationary supercapacitor storage device. The numerical results allow to remark that the sliding mode control is able to track a requested trajectory, which is determined by an optimization technique and exhibits the required robustness against the uncertainties and disturbances
Method for Detecting or Diagnosing Genomic Instability
A method is provided for detecting or diagnosing genomic instability in an individual by determining the difference in mutation frequency between a non-conserved genomic region and an ultra-conserved genomic region (UCR), where a statistically significant increase in mutation frequency in the non-conserved region as compared to the UCR establishes a likelihood of genomic instability in the individual
The role of geographical location for work-life balance satisfaction: Insights from Italian coworking spaces
With the rapid advancements in information and communication technologies reshaping ways and places of work, the quest for work-life balance has gained crucial importance. Recent literature has increasingly emphasised coworking spaces as a potential solution to foster work-life balance by alleviating work-life conflicts and offering environments that favour an integration of work and leisure. Despite this growing interest, quantitative studies in this domain are still lacking. This study aims to fill this gap by drawing on data from an online survey addressed to coworking space users in Italy conducted in 2022–2023. By applying an ordered logit model, the paper investigates the factors influencing coworkers’ work-life balance satisfaction and the work-life conflicts they experienced. A specific focus is devoted to the role of the geographical location of coworking spaces, controlling for working conditions and the adoption of multilocal working and living arrangements. The results reveal that coworkers in non-urban areas report higher work-life balance levels and encounter fewer conflicts than their urban counterparts
sulla base delle caratteristiche degli utenti: (i) lavoratori e studenti locali;
(ii) nuovi residenti a lungo termine; (iii) residenti temporanei; (iv) nomadi
digitali. L’obiettivo del capitolo è descrivere il potenziale degli spazi di lavoro
collaborativi nelle aree periferiche del paese, illustrando come questi
spazi possano essere usati come strumenti nell’ambito di iniziative – pubbliche
e private – volte a ripopolare aree in declino demografico, promuovere
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
