Peroxynitrite-mediated oxidation of ferrous carbonylated myoglobin is limited by carbon monoxide dissociation
Peroxynitrite-mediated oxidation of ferrous nitrosylated myoglobin (Mb(II)-NO) involves the transient ferric nitrosylated species (Mb(III)-NO), followed by NO dissociation and formation of ferric myoglobin (Mb(III)). In contrast, peroxynitrite-mediated oxidation of ferrous oxygenated myoglobin (Mb(II)-O-2) involves the transient ferrous deoxygenated and ferryl derivatives (Mb(II) and Mb(IV)=O, respectively), followed by Mb(III) formation. Here, kinetics of peroxynitrite-mediated oxidation of ferrous carbonylated horse heart myoglobin (Mb(II)-CO) is reported. Values of the first-order rate constant for peroxynitrite-mediated oxidation of Mb(II)-CO (i.e., for Mb(III) formation) and of the first-order rate constant for CO dissociation from Mb(II)-CO (i.e., for Mb(II) formation) are h = (1.2 +/- 0.2) x 10(-2) s(-1) and k(off(CO)) = (1.4 +/- 0.2) x 10(-2) s(-1) , respectively, at pH 7.2 and 20.0 degrees C. The coincidence of values of h and k(off(CO)) indicates that CO dissociation represents the rate limiting step of peroxynitrite-mediated oxidation of Mb(II)-CO. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Cognitive deficits in beta-thalassemia major
OBJECTIVES:
To assess cognitive functioning in patients affected by beta-thalassemia major (beta-th) by using a neuropsychological battery, and to identify clinical correlates.
MATERIAL AND METHODS:Forty-six beta-th patients and 46 controls similar for age, sex, and education participated in the study. All subjects performed a comprehensive neuropsychological battery including tests of abstract reasoning, attention, executive functions, language, constructional/visuospatial skills, and memory.
RESULTS:Compared to controls beta-th patients, in particular those showing signs of hemosiderosis, were significantly impaired on all neuropsychological tests. There was no relationship between cognitive performances and signs of deferoxamine toxicity, deferoxamine dosage, and levels of hemoglobin and ferritin, while duration of transfusional therapy and time interval between onset of blood transfusions and onset of chelating treatment correlated with performances of tests assessing abstract reasoning, attention, constructional/visuospatial skills, memory and with the scores of the Mini Mental State Examination.
CONCLUSION:Our findings suggest that beta-th is associated with neuropsychological impairment involving multiple cognitive domains and argue for a potential role of hemosiderosis on cognitive functionin
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Design of an acoustical decision support system for town and traffic planning
The town planning and the traffic urban planning studies of our modern cities lead us to emphasize the impact that urban activities and movements have on the acoustic level and annoyance. In Italy the enforced rules and laws on noise pollution provide us with an optimal procedure for the measurement, valuation and noise control across the urban territory. The control of the acoustic climate of a city depends on the acoustic zoning of the urban territory which fixes restrictive limits of exposition for each area. The aim of the present paper is to assess acoustic tools of calculation and the territorial information system, useful as a decision support system for town-planning and territorial management. It includes data, text, maps, satellite images and other knowledge input. Functions and tools are available for selective extraction of spatial and temporal data. The software is made up with two main independent component: 1. Management of cartography and vectorial drawing and management of the database; 2. Components able to calculate the noise levels (Ld, Ln, LDEN and DNL) generated by transport means for an macro-scale analysis (according to the objective of the system) Thanks to its flexibility, the modular system allows to meet the demands of a wide range of applications
Noise in a hospital area. Measure and evaluation
The territory of Sciacca has been acoustically subdivided into homogeneous areas by the authors. In the present job, our attention is focused on the zones in class I that includes particularly sensitive areas as schools and hospitals. The acoustic climate inside and outside the hospital of Sciacca is carried out. The hospital was built on a hillock. Around the hillock two roads, an urban and a main highway are present, both with high traffic. With a campaign of measures, in proximity of the roads, in the hospital square, in the parking, and finally inside the hospital, the equivalent level and the patients exposure was calculated as Ld, Ln and DNL. Both the impact due to the roads (considered as external source) and due to internal traffic, equipments, tools of waste treatment (considered as internal source), has been analyzed. The comparison between noise values and normative limits allows us to evaluate the entity and the priority of the interventions
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
