Reliability, Validity, and Responsiveness of Myotonoinetric Measurement of Muscle Tone, Elasticity, and Stiffness in Patients With Stroke

Arch Phys Med Rehabil 2012;93:532-40. ;Objective: To assess the metric properties of a myotonometer. ;Design: Metric study. ;Setting: Three medical centers. ;Participants: Stroke patients (N=67). ;Intervention: Upper-extremity rehabilitation programs. ;Main Outcome Measures: The tone, elasticity, and stiffness of relaxed extensor digitorum, flexor carpi radialis, and flexor carpi ulnaris were measured using the myotonometer. Fifty-eight patients completed the myotonometer measures twice at pretreatment. The myotonometric measurement and the criteria measures, including hand strength (grip, lateral pinch, and palmar pinch strength) and Action Research Arm Test (ARAT) were administered at pretreatment and posttreatment. ;Results: The myotonometer showed high test-retest reliability for muscle properties in 3 muscles. Significant correlations existed between the tone and stiffness of the 3 muscles and palmar pinch strength, between those of the flexor carpi muscles and lateral pinch strength, and between those of the flexor carpi radialis and the ARAT at posttreatment. The posttreatment elasticity of the 2 flexor carpi muscles was significantly correlated with grip strength. The pretreatment elasticity of the flexor carpi ulnaris was significantly correlated with posttreatment grip strength, and the pretreatment muscle tone and stiffness of the flexor carpi radialis were significantly correlated with palmar pinch strength and the ARAT. The responsiveness of the extensor digitorum was higher than that of the flexor carpi radialis and ulnaris. Muscle stiffness was more responsive than tone and elasticity in 3 muscles. ;Conclusions: Myotonometry can be a reliable, valid, and responsive outcome measure for assessing muscle properties after stroke rehabilitation

The sea urchin seawi and other argonaute family of proteins: it’s a small RNA world after all
A fundamental question in studying embryonic development is to understand the regulation and integration of major developmental events, such as cell proliferation, cell specialization, cell interaction, and cell movement. Regulation of protein transcription, translation, and signaling during development can be modeled by the developmental gene regulatory network (GRN). In the sea urchin GRN, the animal-vegetal axis is established by polarized expression or localization of cell-fate determinants, such as beta-catenin nuclear localization in vegetal cells and bep4 expression in animal cells. Over the last decade, the discovery of small non-coding RNA as an effector of epigenetic, post-transcriptional, and translational regulation has led to reconsideration of the GRN. In this thesis, we investigated the role of argonaute/piwi and their association with small non-coding RNA in sea urchin development. We characterized the sea urchin argonaute/piwi proteins, examining their developmental expression profiles, characterizing the proteins present in seawi-associated MT-RNP complexes, and examining the small non-coding RNA populations in eggs, embryos, adult tissues, and MT-RNP complexes. We show seawi, sea urchin piwi, is expressed in germline lineage and stem cells in development, and seawi predominately associates with piRNA. Within the seawi-associated population of piRNAs, there are specific sets of piRNA sequences, which are complementary to the mRNA of cell-fate determinants bep4 and beta-catenin. These results lead to the potential for small non-coding RNA regulation of GRNs in sea urchin development. We also show that mi- and piRNAs are present in sea urchin sperm. This suggests that sperm has the ability to provide small non-coding RNAs to regulate embryonic developmental events. This finding challenges the current theory of sperm serving only as the delivery system for the paternal genome and provides new insight for a novel paternal regulation.Ph. A study of the Allusions to Chuang Tzu in the reception of Su Shi's Poetry
The world is a sea of books; all creations are based on the achievements of their predecessors. Su Shi has stated clearly his admiration for Chuang Tzu; we can understand the poetry of Su Shi with his remembrance and tribute to Chuang Tzu by exploring the phenomenon of allusions to Chuang Tzu in the poetry of Su Shi. Academic research has already found that Chuang Tzu is actually the practitioner of \ue2making articles as amusement\ue2 and Su Shi is in the same vein with a concrete manifestation of \ue2making poems as amusement\ue2 to show the freedom of artistic creation space. Scholars have proposed that the Outer and Miscellaneous Chapters of Chuang Tzu had been neglected by people was due to Su Shi. Through the practical concerns of the poetry of Su Shi in this study, we found that the poetry of Su Shi did not ignore the outer and miscellaneous chapters of Chuang Tzu, on the contrary, the degree of attention is no less than the Inner Chapters. Scholars have proposed that the phenomenon of allusions in the poetry of Su Shi is mostly into words. In this paper, however, the author proposes with examples and indicates that the allusions to Chuang Tzu in the poetry of Su Shi are not only into words but also a major feature of imaginative thinking in images. Through the discussion of the phenomenon of allusions to Chuang Tzu in the poetry of Su Shi in this paper, it can be observed that the acceptance and creative interpretation of Chuang Tzu in the poetry of Su Shi, the concrete practice of making the old things new, and the implicit beauty of the real meaning is implied. And further confirmed the comment of \ue2Dongpo stems from Chuang Tzu is nine out of ten\ue2 stated by Liu Xizai in Qing, as well as understand the specific connotation of "Peotry of Zizhan, with clear words in sleet and powder, are the poetry of Taoist\ue2 called by Liu Shipei

All the presented kinematical data were measured from modelled thrust wedges in our sandbox experiments which illustrating how brittle upper crust response differently to distinct boundary conditions, like that of indentation or underthrusting of certain plate/block mantle lithosphere in the northern Tibetan Plateau. Assessment of Self-Archiving in Institutional Repositories: Depositorship and Full-Text Availability
This research evaluates the success of open access self-archiving in several well-known institutional repositories. Two assessment factors have been applied to examine the current practice of self-archiving: depositorship and the availability of full text. This research discovers that the rate of author self-archiving is low and that the majority of documents have been deposited by a librarian or administrative staff. Similarly, the rate of full-text availability is relatively low, except for Australian repositories. By identifying different practices of self-archiving, repository managers can create new strategies for the operation of their repositories and the development of archiving policies
