Snapshots of a Literary Friendship: Francisco Arcellana and Jose Garcia Villa*

    Get PDF
Accounts of literary friendships provide one with material for literary scholarship. This paper presents “snapshots” of the friendship of Francisco Arcellana (1917–2002) and Jose Garcia Villa (1908– 97). Arcellana and Villa’s friendship bears indelible traces of Philippine literary history at large; to look at the microcosm that is their friendship is also to get a glimpse of a macrocosm of relations, forces, and movements that have constituted Philippine literature. *An earlier version of this paper was read at a panel organized by the Department of English Studies and Comparative Literature, College of Arts and Letters, University of the Philippines, on 9 September 2016, on the centenary of Francisco Arcellana. The author thanks Paolo Manalo and Isabel Banzon for the invitation to speak at the panel.

Multiscale Patterning of a Metallic Glass using Sacrificial Imprint Lithography

    No full text
Bulk metallic glasses have been advanced as a means to achieve durable multiscale, nanotextured surfaces with desirable properties dictated by topography for a multitude of applications. One barrier to this achievement is the lack of a bridging technique between macroscale thermoplastic forming and nanoimprint lithography, which arises from the difficulty and cost of generating controlled nanostructures on complex geometries using conventional top-down approaches. This difficulty is compounded by the necessary destruction of any resulting reentrant structures during rigid demolding. We have developed a generalized method to overcome this limitation by sacrificial template imprinting using zinc oxide nanostructures. It is established that such structures can be grown inexpensively and quickly with tunable morphologies on a wide variety of substrates out of solution, which we exploit to generate the nanoscale portion of the multiscale pattern through this bottom-up approach. In this way, we achieve metallic structures that simultaneously demonstrate features from the macroscale down to the nanoscale, requiring only the top-down fabrication of macro/microstructured molds. Upon detachment of the formed part from the multiscale molds, the zinc oxide remains embedded in the surface and can be removed by etching in mild conditions to both regenerate the mold and render the surface of the bulk metallic glass nanoporous. The ability to pattern metallic surfaces in a single step on length scales from centimeters down to nanometers is a critical step toward fabricating devices with complex shapes that rely on multiscale topography for their intended functions, such as for biomedical and electrochemical applications.Peer reviewe

Paranoia and irony in the Anglophone dectective narrative and the novels of Umberto Eco

The thesis provides a reading of Umberto Eco's three novels, The Name of the Rose, Foucault's Pendulum, and The Island of the Day Before, that, while it acknowledges the importance of the Italian literary tradition in which they stand, also seeks to explain why their author appeals so frequently to literary models outside Italy, and in particular the Anglo-American detective genre. Chapter One explains Eco's relationship to the development of Italian literature through his lifetime. It is noted that Eco is beginning, both in his semiotics and his fiction, from a position where post-structuralism has been extensively explored by neo-avant-gardew riters. Eco positions himself alongsides uchw riters as Italo Calvino and Jorge Luis Borges, who wish to explore the ludic possibilities of working within structures, while all the time acknowledging the epistemological limitations of so doing. Eco's chosen structure, more often than not, is the highly defined genre of the detective story. From here, the following chapters engage in close readings of the three novels, with particular emphasis on The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum, demonstrating that they explore problems of interpretation central to the detective narrative. In doing this, they display an intimate knowledge of generic developments within the detective tradition, and of the philosophical and aesthetic uses made of the genre by other writers. The embedding of intertextual references to other detective narratives within Eco's novels is an important factor, as they come together to form a narrative of epistemological inquiry that itself follows Eco's philosophical progress through the years. In short, the novels, inter alia, map a systematic inquiry into the possibility of systematic inquiry. They reserve the space to engage in such an ironic and self-referential project precisely through their fictionality

Entre palavras e imagens: as narrativas de Valêncio Xavier e de Jonathan Safran Foer

This thesis studies the works of Brazilian author Valêncio Xavier and North American author Jonathan Safran Foer, both of which, through narratives composed by newspaper articles, drawings, photographs, maps, flip books and by a peculiar textual disposition, transcend the traditional notion of romance mostly by incorporating other artistic manifestations, which allows them to be denominated as hybrid and interartistic narratives. Discussing these authors’ works consists on using alternative and current theories in order to analyze the intersection between word and image. Such contemporary and profane narratives, if they are considered through the concepts of Giorgio Agambem, subvert and illuminate the book as object and support, restoring the playful aspect of reading and the pleasure of the unexpected in each page. Hence, the aforementioned texts are analyzed as representatives of a narrative that is contemporary because it profanes themes and supports and, consequently, analyzed through questions related to visual narratives and interartistic poetics, to fictional games and intertextual collage and still, and through the reflection on the themes shared by them: the re-elaboration of memory as well as the joys and sorrows of childhood and old age. The narratives Minha mãe morrendo e o menino mentido, Meu sétimo dia: uma novella rébus, “Rremembranças de menina de rua morta nua”, “Maciste no inferno” and “Mistério mágico”, written by Valêncio Xavier and the novels Everything is illuminated and Extremely loud & incredibly close, the unclassifiable Tree of Codes and the short story “If the Aging Magician Should Begin to Believe”, by Jonathan Safran Foer are discussed in order to highlight their similarities in terms of formal composition strategies. Just as much as Valêncio Xavier and Jonathan Safran Foer profane themes and supports, the present thesis also aims to subvert the subjectile it deals with in a certain way, playing and interacting with the works and authors, since, as Roland Barthes once said, there’s no other way of dealing with authors and their works other than writing with them.
