Churches don’t just follow their congregants’ views and actions on political issues, they may be shaping them, too.
Despite the US Constitution’s separation of church and state, American religious institutions and movements are often active in politics. But are they following their congregants’ existing views and actions or influencing them? Using national survey data, Andre P. Audette and Christopher L. Weaver find that churches do engage their congregants politically; at least 50 percent of congregants engage in at least one form of political activity such as attending a rally or registering voters, and a substantial number have also heard sermons addressing political issues such as voting, the Black Lives Matter movement, and abortion

Politics in church may hurt religion, but it helps churches
Despite being seen by much of the world as a very religious country, religious affiliation in the US is in decline, with fewer Americans now likely to attend church. In new research, Andre P. Audette and Christopher L. Weaver write that some churches have attempted to address declining attendance by becoming more politically active in order to attract more people from the declining pool of the religious. Using survey data, they find that churches which engaged in more political activities tended to attract larger congregations, something they attribute to the greater likelihood that political partisans will ‘shop around’ when deciding which church to regularly attend. They warn that while such strategies may boost churches’ attendance in the short-term, the politicization of religion may turn more people off religion overall
Reaction Rate Modeling To Optimize O(1d) Insertion Into Methylamine For The Detection Of Aminomethanol
O(D) insertion reactions with methylamine are a predicted pathway to form aminomethanol\footnote{B. M. Hays, S. L. Widicus Weaver, J. Phys. Chem. A, 117, 32, 7142-7148 (2013)}\footnote{M. E. Wolf, P. R. Hoobler, J. M. Turney, H. F. Schaefer III, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2019,21, 24194-24205}, a possible glycine precursor in the interstellar medium. In a preliminary study, O(D) insertion into methane and ethylene have shown to successfully result in the formation and spectral detection of methanol and vinyl alcohol, respectively\footnote{B. M. Hays, N. Wehres, B. Alligood DePrince, A. A.M. Roy, J. C. Laas, S. L. Widicus Weaver, Chem. Phys. Lett., 630, 18 (2015)}. Despite the detection of these insertion products, the complex mixture resulting under these conditions has not been well characterized. Likewise, O(D) insertion reactions with methylamine have proven more troublesome. We have examined the reaction pathways of the chemical mixtures resulting from the 248 nm laser photolysis of ozone + methane and ozone + methylamine. Millimeter/submillimeter spectra have been collected in both the frequency and time domain. The observed product pathways have been modeled using F0AM (Framework for 0-D Atmospheric Modelling) with the aim of determining the ideal experimental conditions to extend the lifetime of aminomethanol to enable its spectral detection. The results of both the laboratory studies and the modeling work will be presented.Made available in DSpace on 2021-09-24T21:09:36Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 2

Patterns of primary moult in the Weavers, Ploceidae
Includes bibliographical references.Patterns of renewal of feathers are poorly known in African birds. Moult is energetically costly and is thus an important part of a bird's annual cycle; moult needs to be fitted in with breeding activities, and in some species, migration. Ringers in southern Africa have been submitting primary moult data to SAFRING, the South African Bird Ringing Unit, since 1998, providing a large amount of data that the author has been curating and checking on an on-going basis as Ringing Coordinator. May main interest is in the weaverbirds and I have ringed several thousand Southern Masked Weavers Ploceus velatus and many other species. Les Underhill and Walter Zucchini developed a statistical model to analyse timing and duration of primary moult in a standardized way in 1988. Primary moult was analysed in the southern African weaverbird family using the Underhill-Zucchini method throughout. In some species, this method was applied to individual feathers as well as the whole wing
