Striatal presynaptic dopamine in schizophrenia, part II: Meta-analysis of [18F/11C]-DOPA PET studies
Background: Alterations in striatal dopamine neurotransmission are central to the emergence of psychotic symptoms and to the mechanism of action of antipsychotics. Although the functional integrity of the presynaptic system can be assessed by measuring striatal dopamine synthesis capacity (DSC), no quantitative meta-analysis is available. Methods: Eleven striatal (caudate and putamen) [11C/18F]-DOPA positron emission tomography studies comparing 113 patients with schizophrenia and 131 healthy controls were included in a quantitative meta-analysis of DSC. Demographic, clinical, and methodological variables were extracted from each study or obtained from the authors and tested as covariates. Hedges' g was used as a measure of effect size in Comprehensive Meta-Analysis. Publication bias was assessed with funnel plots and Egger's intercept. Heterogeneity was addressed with the Q statistic and I2 index. Results: Patients and controls were well matched in sociodemographic variables (P >. 05). Quantitative evaluation of publication bias was nonsignificant (P =. 276). Heterogeneity across study was modest in magnitude and statistically nonsignificant (Q = 19.19; P =. 078; I2 = 39.17). Patients with schizophrenia showed increased striatal DSC as compared with controls (Hedges' g = 0.867, CI 95% from 0.594 to 1.140, Z = 6.222, P <. 001). The DSC schizophrenia/control ratio showed a relatively homogenous elevation of around 14% in schizophrenic patients as compared with controls. DSC elevation was regionally confirmed in both caudate and putamen. Controlling for potential confounders such as age, illness duration, gender, psychotic symptoms, and exposure to antipsychotics had no impact on the results. Sensitivity analysis confirmed robustness of meta-analytic findings. Conclusions: The present meta-analysis showed consistently increased striatal DSC in schizophrenia, with a 14% elevation in patients as compared with healthy controls. © 2011 The Author
How to be a woman. Models of masochism and sacrifice in young adult fiction
Buffy, Bella, Veronica, Katniss, Clary, Tris and Saba : For two decades post-feminist heroines have faced life-threatening trials as part of their progress to womanhood. In this chapter I consider how young adult popular fictions operate as forms of pedagogy for young women by offering them particular models of maturity and womanhood. I explore the recurrence and reformulation of a persistent pattern of behaviour in which heroines engage in risky and/or masochistic behaviours for which they are emotionally rewarded.. These recurrences function as a form of vicarious experiential learning in which readers and viewers learn that emotional gratification and adult status are conferred through self-harm and self-sacrifice. Popular culture is not a monolithic form and young adult fictions are no exception. An analysis of fictional examples of this behaviour pattern challenges the idea that heroines today are empowered agents as a result of the legacy of feminism. At the same time, the analysis belies any notion that fictions are universally hegemonic and oppressive – fictions can and do disrupt and interrogate this pattern of emotional masochism. Scholars of public pedagogy have explored the complexities, contradictions and subtleties of the pedagogical process. Sandlin O’Malley and Burdick (2011) in their review of public pedagogy literature acknowledge that some scholarship has demonstrated how “the teaching and learning inherent within daily life can be both oppressive and resistant” (p. 144). Jubas and Knutson (2012) also see public pedagogy as an arena where contradictions and tensions are in play. They argue that we can see “New examples of dialectic or tensions … between the authority of the producer and the consumer; between traditional structures which ground identities and help people make sense of cultural texts, and personal agency which frees people to choose and invent identities and meanings” (p. 86). This analysis aims to contribute to understandings of the complexities of public pedagogy by showing how fictions aimed primarily at young women both resist and accommodate patriarchy
The L-p-to-L-q boundedness of commutators with applications to the Jacobian operator
Supplying the missing necessary conditions, we complete the characterisation of the L-p -> L-q boundedness of commutators [b, T] of pointwise multiplication and Calderon-Zygmund operators, for arbitrary pairs of 1 q, our results are new even for special classical operators with smooth kernels. As an application, we show that every f is an element of L-p(R-d) can be represented as a convergent series of normalised Jacobians J(u) = det del uof u is an element of (over dot(W))(1,dp)(R-d)(d). This extends, from p = 1 to p > 1, a result of Coifman, Lions, Meyer and Semmes about J:. (over dot(W))(1,d)(R-d)(d) -> H-1(R-d), and supports a conjecture of Iwaniec about the solvability of the equation Ju = f is an element of L-p(R-d). (C) 2021 The Author(s). Measuring industry-science links through inventor-author relations: A profiling method
In this pilot study we examine the performance of text-based profiling in recovering a set of validated inventor-author links. In a first step we match patents and publications solely based on their similarity in content. Next, we compare inventor and author names on the highest ranked matches for the occurrence of name matches. Finally, we compare these candidate matches with the names listed in a validated set of inventor-author names. Our text-based profile methodology performs significantly better than a random matching of patents and publications, suggesting that text-based profiling is a valuable complementary tool to the name searches used in previous studies.innovation; industry-science links; text-based profiling;
