The legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

No full text
The Author investigates the figure and role of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg from a constitutional law perspective. The paper deals with contribution of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a lawyer first and later as justice appointed to the United States Supreme Court. By way of analysis touching upon some her most prominent majority and dissenting opinions, the A. hinges on several issues pertaining to the safeguard of fundamental rights and to the relationships between the legislator and the Constitutional Judge. The Author then goes on by examining Justice Ginsburg’s concept of equality with respect to women’s rights and affirmative actions to then move on to an in depth focus on the role of the dissent in the US legal system and on Justice Ginsburg’s concept of justice. At the outset, the Articles aims at highlighting the legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg on a global dimension

Biomechanical signals and the C-type natriuretic peptide counteract catabolic activities induced by IL-1? in chondrocyte/agarose constructs

Introduction: The present study examined the effect of C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) on the anabolic and catabolic activities in chondrocyte/agarose constructs subjected to dynamic compression. Methods: Constructs were cultured under free-swelling conditions or subjected to dynamic compression with low (0.1 to 100 pM) or high concentrations (1 to 1,000 nM) of CNP, interleukin-1? (IL-1?), and/or KT-5823 (inhibits cyclic GMP-dependent protein kinase II (PKGII)). Anabolic and catabolic activities were assessed as follows: nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) release, and [3H]-thymidine and 35SO4 incorporation were quantified by using biochemical assays. Gene expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), aggrecan, and collagen type II were assessed with real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). Two-way ANOVA and the post hoc Bonferroni-corrected t tests were used to examine data. Results: CNP reduced NO and PGE2 release and partially restored [3H]-thymidine and 35SO4 incorporation in constructs cultured with IL-1?. The response was dependent on the concentration of CNP, such that 100 pM increased [3H]-thymidine incorporation (P < 0.001). This is in contrast to 35SO4 incorporation, which was enhanced with 100 or 1000 nM CNP in the presence and absence of IL-1? (P < 0.001). Stimulation by both dynamic compression and CNP and/or the PKGII inhibitor further reduced NO and PGE2 release and restored [3H]-thymidine and 35SO4 incorporation. In the presence and absence of IL-1?, the magnitude of stimulation for [3H]-thymidine and 35SO4 incorporation by dynamic compression was dependent on the concentration of CNP and the response was inhibited with the PKGII inhibitor. In addition, stimulation by CNP and/or dynamic compression reduced IL-1?-induced iNOS and COX-2 expression and restored aggrecan and collagen type II expression. The catabolic response was not further influenced with the PKGII inhibitor in IL-1?-treated constructs. Conclusions: Treatment with CNP and dynamic compression increased anabolic activities and blocked catabolic effects induced by IL-1?. The anabolic response was PKGII mediated and raises important questions about the molecular mechanisms of CNP with mechanical signals in cartilage. Therapeutic agents like CNP could be administered in conjunction with controlled exercise therapy to slow the OA disease progression and to repair damaged cartilage. The findings from this research provide the potential for developing novel agents to slow the pathophysiologic mechanisms and to treat OA in the young and old. <br/

Master’s Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. The South African economy was virtually stagnant over the last five years and the government expenditure did not achieve the desirable economic objectives. The domino effect of this failure has created an uncertain and volatile business environment which threatened the existence of many organisations in South Africa. Early in 2018, Cyril Ramaphosa was sworn in as the new President of South Africa and his primary focus to date is on the revival of the country’s economy. Job satisfaction is arguably a crucial key that can unlock the productivity potential of human capital in an organisation. In view of the above, aim of this study is to assist Scott Bader South Africa to identify the facets that influence job satisfaction and staff productivity, as well as to associate a relationship between job satisfaction and staff productivity. The quantitative research methodology was adopted for this study, whereby the entire population of Scott Bader was surveyed. The relevant concepts or facets of job satisfaction and staff productivity were identified through a concise literature review. A correlation analysis showed that the satisfaction with the line manager leadership, satisfaction with recognition, as well as satisfaction with remuneration, was the main facets associated with job satisfaction. All the facets of job satisfaction that were reviewed in this study illustrated a slight to moderate positive relationship with the overall job satisfaction of the employees. Similarly, the ability to work independently, employee input and working in a safe environment, were also found to be the top ranked facets that influence staff productivity, while all the facets of staff productivity indicated a slight to moderate positive relationship with the overall staff productivity. The results from the research study yielded a moderate and positive relationship between job satisfaction and staff productivity through a multiple linear regression analysis. Based on these findings, it was suggested that Scott Bader South Africa should consider these facets and ensure that the human capital component (job satisfaction) of productivity is incorporated to overall local strategic plan of the compan

No full text
Mimi Leder’s On the Basis of Sex is considered as one of numerous feminist masterpieces for its original story of a real deal superhero and liberal feminism becomes one of the strong issues in the movie. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characterization of the main character, Ruth Bader Ginsburg as well as to discuss liberal feminism depicted on her. The analysis used several theories of characterization mainly by Christopher Russel Reaske, Joseph M. Boggs, James H. Pickering and Jeffry D. Hoeper. Also, some liberal feminism theories such as the ones from Rosemarie Putnam Tong, Judith Worrell, and Nurul Hanifah et al are used. The method applied in this study is qualitative descriptive, while data such as dialogue, monologue, and narration are taken from the movie script. Some steps are conducted to collect the data such as watching the movie, reading the screenplay, identifying the data, classifying the data, and reducing the data. There are two results in this study. First, there are a number of traits found on Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the main character using theories of characterization. Second, the goals of liberal feminism are occurred and depicted on Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the main character. Keywords: Characterization, Liberal feminism, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, On the Basis of Se

Maintaining a musical tradition in Arab-America : an oral history of Abdel Karim Bader

No full text
Abdel Karim Bader, a cosmopolitan oud performer and teacher, was born in the Arab world in the early 1920s and immigrated to the United States of America in the early nineteen seventies. This thesis is an oral history that explores Bader as a carrier of an Arabic musical tradition, tarab, through three topics: biography, pedagogy, and improvisation. Bader's biography unveils a rich social and musical persona which is understood through the lens of tarab musicianship and values. He favors a pragmatic apprenticeship method, common to tarab musicians, that heavily relies on oral methods to transmit ideas, repertoire, and stylistic subtleties. Finally, Bader's improvisatory thought is influenced by both his knowledge of Arabic music theory and his performance experience, and it is exposed through examples from my lessons and an analysis of a solo improvisation. I have been Bader's apprentice since January 2010 and view this study as a contribution to a little-known facet of Arab-American identity and cultural practice.Thesis (M.A.)--Michigan State University. The main purpose of this article is to present the image of Russia in the Polish literary reportage. I would like to show how often the contemporary Polish reportage refers to national stereotypes, even if it wants to argue with them. My analysis mainly focus on the books of Krystyna Kurczab-Redlich and Jacek Hugo-Bader, who describe the contemporary russian politics and culture from different perspectives. While the author of "Pandrioszka" mostly concentrates on Moscow, the author of "Dzienniki kołymskie" is particularly interested in Kolyma
