Thomas S. Brown et Neil J. Christie, Was there a Byzantine model of settlement in Italy?, p. 377-399. This paper analyses the results of recent research concerning settlement in Byzantine Italy between the 6th and 8th centuries A.D., concentrating on the well-documented provinces of northern and central Italy. It develops themes first proposed in 1978 by Brown who stressed the role of insecurity and the militarisation of society in promoting seulement change in the imperial territories, in particular through the creation of castra. Besides examining the origin and nature of these castra, and their position in current thinking on the later process of incastellamento, comment is also made on the effects of Byzantine rule on the cities of Italy, assessing levels of continuity and change. The paper is divided into two halves : in the first part the regions of Venetia and the Exarchate are surveyed from a primarily documentary viewpoint in the second half archaeological data provide physical image of settlement change in Liguria and central Italy The combina tion of these various sources of evidence allow important conclusions to be drawn regarding the character of Byzantine rule and settlement in ItalyBrown Thomas, Christie Neil. Multi-proxy study of Holocene environmental change and human activity in the Central Apennine Mountains, Italy

This paper describes a multi-proxy palaeoecological investigation undertaken in conjunction with an archaeological survey of the Upper Sangro Valley in the Abruzzo National Park, Central Italy. Despite being a biodiversity hotspot and regarded as a near-pristine area, the pollen, spore and diatom data all show major changes in the vegetation extending to over 2000m a.s.l. during the mid to late Holocene. Although there are changes in ecological composition earlier in the Holocene they are different in type and magnitude from the changes which began about 800 cal a BC. The pollen and diatom evidence do not correlate well with regional palaeoclimate data, or on-site isotopic evidence, but do appear to be related to Samnite (later Iron Age) clearance and upland grazing associated with transhumance and later annexation (and centuriation) of the lower slopes by Roman surveyors. The greatest change in vegetation was during the period c. AD 500–600 and corresponds with the Byzantine–Gothic Wars, and Lombard– Carolingian settlement reorganization into nucleated hilltop settlements which managed upland grazing. This pattern of intensive land use at all altitudes persisted until the early 20th century and only changed following rural depopulation after World War II. These data illustrate how cultural factors had a profound effect on this mountainous region which, in this case, far outweighed the effects of climatic fluctuations which are known to have occurred from both this study area and the region<br/

Urban Transformations in the Late Antique West: Materials, Agents, and Models

This volume is the fruit of a highly productive international research gathering academic and professional (field- and museum) colleagues to discuss new results and approaches, recent finds and alternative theoretical assessments of the period of transition and transformation of classical towns in Late Antiquity. Experts from an array of modern countries attended and presented to help compare and contrast critically archaeologies of diverse regions and to debate the qualities of the archaeology and the current modes of study. While a number of papers inevitably focused on evidence available for both Spain and Portugal, we were delighted to have a spread of contributions that extended the picture to other territories in the Late Roman West and Mediterranean. The emphasis was very much on the images presented by archaeology (rescue and research works, recent and past), but textual data were also brought into play by various contributors
