    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Monitoring thresholds and output assessment related to in-situ concrete bridge testing

    Capacity assessment of existing concrete bridges through proof-load testing is a topic of growing interest among owners, consultants, and researchers. In many countries, a significant part of the bridge stock is reaching the end of its designed lifespan or may fail to meet the increased traffic demands of today. In addition, the status of many bridges may be uncertain due to a lack of documentation, deterioration, or unexpected structural behaviour, which is why traditional evaluation methods may be inadequate. As such, these bridges could represent an extensive economic and environmental burden to society. Proof-load testing is hypothesized as a possible solution because it immediately demonstrates that the capacity of a bridge is, as a minimum, greater than the applied load. The present PhD project includes experimental testing and monitoring output related to proof-load testing and is part of a larger parent research project about capacity assessment of existing concrete bridges. Advanced modelling and probabilistic considerations, distributed across two other PhD projects, were also a part of the parent project. The research studies presented in this thesis seek to cover a wide range of aspects related to performing a proof-load test; this includes planning and execution of tests, choosing relevant monitoring, assessment of monitoring systems, evaluation of stop criteria, and reliability aspects pertinent to the bridge’s continued service. Specific focus is additionally dedicated to field implementation and the combined application of the two monitoring systems, digital image correlation and acoustic emission. The experimental studies of this thesis were performed on test specimens ranging from material samples to full-scale in-situ structures. Noticeable among these were; (1) T-section beam elements with a span of 5 m tested in the laboratory, (2) OT-slabs with a dimension of 8.4 m × 1.7 m × 0.37 m tested in the laboratory, (3) OT-slab strips with a dimension of 9.0 m × 3.6 m × 0.45 m tested in-situ, and (4) four concrete slab bridges which were proof-load tested in a pilot project, and among which, one was an OT-slab bridge. A preliminary assessment of 2D DIC was performed in the work of the T-section beam tests, the laboratory OT-slab tests, and the in-situ strip tests. This was done to evaluate its applicability for implementation in proof-load testing. The studies showed that 2D DIC may be effectively applied to measure on a raw concrete surface; however, the results do benefit from applying a surface pattern, which may be applied in-situ. In addition, the results may be further improved through image optimization. An opensource DIC algorithm was used for real-time analysis, and it was shown how geometric considerations might be used to correct the out-of-plane effects of 2D DIC. As such, with an efficient method for surface pattern application, a real-time field system, and the possibility to perform distortional corrections, it was assessed that 2D DIC might serve as a suitable system for proof-load testing. Through further evaluation towardsstop criteria identification, DIC showed promising results as a stand-alone method, where cracks may be detected sufficiently early and continuously monitored towards specific stop criteria. The study also suggested a more qualitative approach to stop criteria, where indications and observation, such as crack detection, provide useful information as decision basis for a possible continuation of a proof-load test. In the experiments with combined use of DIC and AE, it was found that application of AE in this manner might not be feasible as a stand-alone method; however, when combined with DIC and applied correctly, it showed potential for generating useful qualitative results. As such, the study suggested a test procedure involving a flexible loading protocol for optimal knowledge gain with AE. The gained insight from the research results was applied to overcome real-life in-situ challenges associated with the performed pilot proof-load tests and to choose relevant monitoring parameters for stop criteria evaluation. In addition, it has contributed to work on national- and international guidelines on the topic. The target load of the proof-load tests was determined through a reliability method, where resistance input was disregarded. It was instead determined so that the probability that the actual load effect exceeds the proof-load effect corresponds to the target reliability level, thus ensuring sufficient reliability after proof-loading. The pilot proof-load tests all reached the desired target load without signs of distress, and as a result, the tested bridges were reclassified from class 80 to class 100. The tests thus served well as a proof-of-concept and as a basis for further use of proof-load testing for capacity assessment of existing concrete slab bridges

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
