Investigating the influence of lean six sigma practices on quality performance in medical device manufacturing industry / Sim Choon Ling...[et al.]

    No full text
With the growing pressure to gain optimum level of quality and speed, Lean and Six Sigma practices have been acknowledgedas viable alternatives for process improvement. Separately, both methodologies were unable to drive process improvement to its full potential thus recent years have witnessed greater tendency for Lean and Six Sigma practices to be implemented in an integrated way. This paper attempted to highlight the key strengths, weaknesses and criticisms of Lean and Six Sigma practices as a separate methodology as well as an overview on how the two methodologies complement each other into a more robust and comprehensive approach. Furthermore, although there is a growing body of anecdotal evidence in supporting the positive linkage of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) practices in enhancing quality performance nevertheless the abundance of non-empirical evidence on whether the integration of Lean and Six Sigma practices is tied to superior performance improvement than either on a standalone basis has triggered the needs to further verifying this issue. The objective of this paper is to define and develop an agenda for future research to investigate the impact of LSS practices on quality performance in medical device manufacturing (MDM) industry

This study seeks to investigate the relationship between total quality management (TQM) practices and sustainable performance. Data were collected from 4- and 5-stars hotels in Malaysia from June to December 2018. Based on a sample of 121 valid responses, empirical results indicate that TQM practices have significant and positive impacts on sustainable performance, encompassing economic performance, environmental performance and social performance. These practices could be considered as critical quality management practices that significantly contribute to sustainability goals. This study enriches the literature on quality management and sustainability management, as well as provides some important insights into the effective allocation of resources to achieve sustainable development goals

The impact of mobile telecommunication service quality on tourists’ destination satisfaction in Sarawak

    No full text
Although Sarawak is a state in Malaysia with numerous interesting tourist destinations, tourist satisfaction is crucial for Sarawak's tourist destinations and is generally aected by the service quality. Generally, mobile telecommunication is essential for individuals nowadays. Therefore, the study aims to identify the impact of mobile telecommunication service quality on tourists' destination satisfaction in Sarawak. The service quality model (SERVQUAL) was used to measure the service quality of mobile telecommunication. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS v.26) was also applied to access the research model enveloped. Besides, the study used a simple random sample technique and collected 200 questionnaires from respondents who were local and foreign tourists visiting Sarawak. The results showed that reliability, assurance, tangible, empathy, and responsiveness of mobile telecommunication service quality have signicantly inuenced tourists' destination satisfaction in Sarawak. The results also indicated that Sarawak tourism destinations should be improved to increase tourists' tendency to revisit

Books order can be made directly to UniMAP Press, Universiti Malaysia Perlis. ([email protected] / 04 9775159)The introductory of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in replacing the existing Sales and Services Tax (SST) has turned out to be an attention-grabbing topic to all parties given that the public will be taxed in proportion to their level of spending irrespective of income hence this is definitely an issue that concerns all. Consumers are always resistant to change thus for people to accept any new form of tax, government need to make strong effort in educating and familiarizing it to the members of public on how the new tax (GST) will benefit them in the long run. The successful takeoff of GST is not toll-free as it will require massive preparation from all parties. Ultimately, government plays a crucial role in educating and convincing the public so as to ensure the smooth GST take off

An empirical investigation of the role of lean six sigma practices on quality performance in medical device manufacturing industry

With the growing pressure to gain optimum level of quality and speed, Lean Six Sigma (LSS) practices have drawn considerable attention as a viable alternative for process improvement. However, previous studies revealed that there is very little systematic and rigorous research to validate the claims. In this regard, this paper aims to empirically examine the effect of LSS practices on quality performance in the medical device manufacturing industry. For this study, partial least square–based structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to empirically examine the effect of LSS practices on quality performance in Malaysian medical device manufacturing industry. The findings of this paper revealed that LSS practices have a significant and positive effect on quality performance in the medical device manufacturing industry. This paper will serve as a valuable implication for industry practitioners in providing them with a clearer managerial direction to exploit the strength of LSS practices to achieve company’s quality goals. Moreover, this study will serve as a basis for future LSS scholars, providing them with valuable insights and directions for future research. This paper develops a conceptual LSS framework that captures the integrated nature of two methodologies and provides empirical evidence that supports the positive influence of LSS practices on quality performance; hence, it contributes to the growing body of LSS literature in both theoretical and empirical sense

Selecting Total Quality Management (TQM) Best Practices in the Hotel Industry Environment : A Hybrid Model based on DEMATEL and ANP

    No full text
Recently, developing strategies for sustainable development (SD) in the hotel industry has been seen globally as a crucial issue. Numerous management systems can assist the hotel industry in creating sustainable performance, such as Total Quality Management (TQM) which is well-reputed in the industry. As such, selecting TQM under an evolving hotel industry environment is seen as an important decision from a strategic perspective given it constitutes contradictory practices, thereby making it a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) issue. In achieving this aim, a Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) approach was adopted in determining the inter-relationships between the primary practices and sub-practices in addition to applying the Analytic Network Process (ANP) for examining the weights of primary practices and sub-practices. In other words, this study aims to provide innovative insight to researchers and practitioners to examine the TQM optimal practices to be implemented incrementally in phases within the hotel industry environment

Link to publisher's homepage at http://www.aspbs.com/science.htmAn automation system using Cellular Neural Network (CNN) algorithm is proposed to assist the radiologists' task in interpreting the digital mammogram image for detecting the presence of breast masses abnormalities. Mammogram images are low contrast ergo; however by adopting the trained cellular neural network template, it is able to enhance the medical visual quality of the image significantly which is beneficial for early detection. By employing the trained CNN template, the extraction of abnormal breast lesion masses in digital mammogram image can be done efficiently with detection sensitivity up to 100 percent. Furthermore, a Matlab-based graphical user interface (GUI) is developed, featuring a user friendly concept which patient data and output images can be saved in the computer by the radiologists for future reference

Sustainability and ethical issues in hotel industries have received great attention in recent years. This report is the outcome of a field research, which aimed to determine the relationship between TQM, business ethics and sustainable performance. The focus of this research is 4- and 5-stars hotels in Malaysia, in which 162 4- and 5-stars hotels are sampled. Quantitative approach is adopted in which structural equation modelling is employed to assess the relationship between TQM practices, business ethics and sustainable performance. The findings of this study indicate that TQM has positive impact on sustainable performance. Hence, it is concluded that the hoteliers in Malaysia are vigorously focusing on implementation of TQM practices in order to achieve sustainability. Besides, these research findings show that business ethics play as the role of mediator in the relationship of TQM and sustainable performance. The proposed framework serves as a guideline to verify the significance of TQM practices as well as business ethics in order to leverage the hotels' sustainable performance
