‘From the theatre to the office’: an analysis of the managerial and leadership skills and competencies of medical superintendents of public hospitals in Zimbabwe

    No full text
A lack of management capacity was identified as the key stumbling block to attaining the goals of health for all in Zimbabwe. As part of the overall management development process, this research set out to analyze and identify the management and leadership skills and competencies that are important for health services management and to evaluate managers’ self-assessed proficiency in each of these skills. Researchers also examined the impact of past training on perceived competency levels. A cross-sectional survey using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted among 20 hospital managers in the Zimbabwe public hospitals. Respondents were asked to rate the level of importance that each proposed competency had in their job and to indicate their proficiency in each skill. Managers rated competencies related to ‘people management’, ‘self-management’ and ‘task-related skills’ highest followed by ‘strategic planning’ and ‘health delivery’, respectively. The largest differences between mean importance rating and mean skill rating for the public managers was for people management skills, task-related skills and self-management skills. The largest deficits were for people management skills, self-management skills and health delivery skills. Informal management development programmes were found to be more valuable in improving management skills. These findings reflect the reality of the local health service environment and the need of health managers to be given training in management skills. The study and findings will be useful in the conceptualization, design and delivery of health management programmes aimed at enhancing current and future management and leadership capacity in the health sector in Zimbabwe

The inhibited (exhibited) spread of innovations

    Get PDF
This note makes general statements about standard models of the diffusion of innovations. Its premise is a familiar idea that innovations are socially-learned changes that spread like wildfires across diverse populations. However, the rate at which innovations spread is subject to the forces of exhibition and inhibition. Exhibitors promote the spread of innovations; inhibitors subjugate them. Hence, where the forces of subjugation are stronger than the forces of promotion, it is the slow spread, rather than the lack, of innovations which undermines the competitiveness of nations, and consequently frustrates economic performance. This suggests a need for a simple and more realistic model. Since the analytical components (basic equations and statistical inference) of the needed model are readily available, this note attempts a synthesis. Unfortunately in its current version the note is incomplete, and therefore makes only a tentative concluding remark. Even so, there is enough insight to warrant comment.

    Dom Prosper Guéranger et l’Inquisition

    No full text
In 1858 and 1859, Dom Prosper Guéranger, Abbot of Solesmes, wrote in L’Univers nearly thirty articles devoted to Marie d’Agreda and her work, The Mystical City, i.e. the equivalent of a volume about three hundred pages. The prominence given to Roman but also Spanish and French censures and approval testifies to the status occupied by the procedures at the heart of the definition of the politico-religious authority of Rome, certainly in modern times, but examined and put into perspective by the author of the Mémoire sur l’Immaculée Conception (1850) and ardent defender of the Roman magisterium

Innovate and prosper: ensuring Australia's future competitiveness through university-industry collaboration

    Get PDF
Executive summary The continuation of Australia’s economic growth is under threat. In order to sustain the levels of prosperity we have previously experienced, we have to build on our competitive edge in key industries to remain globally competitive. Alongside these developments, Australia’s higher education system is under increased pressure to become more productive and develop courses that address employability. Innovation represents the most reliable and sustainable solution to transition into a high value, high wage economy. Yet Australia ranks 29th out of 30 in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in terms of the proportion of large businesses and small to medium enterprises (SMEs) collaborating with higher education and public research institutions on innovation.   This report acts as the next level of detail to publications such as the Department of Industry’s Boosting the Commercial Returns from Research report and the Business Council of Australia’s Building Australia’s Comparative Advantages, which have highlighted Australia’s poor performance in collaborative innovation. We present five recommendations that are a call to action to universities, industry and Government to take the necessary steps to build an innovation economy. They are not a call for additional funding from Government, rather a more effective way of using our existing resources. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) have engaged with leading figures from industry, including the Australian Industry Group (Ai Group), and partnered with the ATN to develop this five point action plan for Government, the university sector and industry 5 that will provide incentives and impetus for collaboration. Our recommendations include: Rebalance the national research agenda to underpin Australia\u27s economy and future prosperity Create incentives for university-industry collaboration Train researchers for diverse careers Enhance career mobility between industry, academia and government Provide incentives for co-investment in research infrastructure between universities, industry and state and federal government Each recommendation contains a number of practical strategies for consideration by Government, universities and industry. The hope is that the report will encourage dialogue between the three groups and prompt bold policy changes in the coming 12 months and beyond. &nbsp
