Effects of foot orthosis on sprinting biomechanics in flat-footed individuals

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of foot orthosis on ground reaction force variables during running and sprinting in flat-footed individuals. Ten male flat-footed sprint-based athletes were tasked to sprint on an instrumented treadmill at different speeds (5m/s, 6m/s and 7m/s) for two different foot orthosis conditions (neutral insoles and prefabricated foot orthoses). Each participant performed one trial of sprint lasting 5-7 seconds for each speed. Anterior-posterior and vertical ground reaction force variables were measured and analysed. Comfort perception of the foot orthosis was measured using a 150mm visual analogue scale after completion of all sprint trials for each foot orthosis condition. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was performed on ground reaction force data. Paired sample t-test was performed on the comfort perception ratings. No significant interaction effect was found between speed and foot orthosis conditions for the ground reaction force data. Prefabricated foot orthosis was found to decrease peak propulsive force and time to peak vertical force by 3.93% and 11.86% respectively. Conversely, prefabricated foot orthosis was found to increase loading rate by 32.34%. In conclusion, findings suggest that foot orthosis does not exhibit a clear beneficial effect in flat-footed individuals during sprinting.Bachelor of Science (Sport Science and Management

Prefabricated foot orthosis (FO) is commonly worn for flat foot management. This study aimed to investigate the kinetic and perceptual effects of wearing prefabricated FO among flat-footed athletes during bouts of sprints. Twenty male sprint-based sports athletes who had flat foot bilaterally ran at three test speeds (5, 6, 7 m/s) under two conditions: prefabricated FO and sham FO. Ground reaction force (GRF) variables and subjective perceptions were recorded. Kinetic variability of GRF variables were computed to indicate step-to-step variance. Biomechanically, wearing prefabricated FOs increased vertical impact force (p =.005), loading rate (p =.001), and kinetic variability of peak propulsive force (p =.038) and loading rate (p =.019) during sprinting speeds across 5 to 7 m/s. Subjectively, prefabricated FO provided better arch support (p =.001) but resulted in reduced forefoot cushioning (p =.001), heel cushioning (p =.002), and overall comfort (p =.008)

The decision of international students to pursue private HEIs in Malaysia is examined in this study. It attempts to investigate the relationship between the programmes offered, the tuition price, an institution's recognition and reputation, and the choice made by international students to enroll in Malaysian private higher education institutions (HEIs). This paper aims to identify the determining elements while choosing to attend Malaysian private HEIs, and the push-pull theory was applied. Through an online survey, a total of 110 respondents were gathered. The findings of Pearson's correlation analysis revealed a substantial association between the programme offered, the cost of education, the reputation and recognition of institutions, and the choice of international students to study in Malaysian private HEIs. The findings of this study can be valuable to policymakers, educators, and higher education institutions in Malaysia, as they provide insights into the factors that influence international students' choice to enroll at private HEIs. The results may also be useful for marketing and recruitment strategies to attract more international students to Malaysian private HEIs. Recommendations for HEIs are provided based on the findings.&nbsp

M.Phil.ObjectiveTo evaluate the awareness of, attitude to and knowledge regarding Fertility Preservation (FP) among Hong Kong medical students and to identify fertility misconceptions.DesignThis was a cross-sectional survey among medical students. Eligible participants were invited to complete a self-administered online survey.SettingA medical school in Hong Kong.ResultsTwo-hundred-and-forty-three participants completed the online survey. Majority (77.8%) were not familiar with any clinics or specialists who provide services for FP. A vast majority (88.1%) underestimated female infertility at age of 45, whilst 89.7% overestimated the age of male fertility decline. FP knowledge was mainly acquired from electronic media (58.4%) and medical school (57.6%). Medical students showed overwhelming support towards FP for medical reasons (97.9%) but had mixed responses for social reasons due to career development in females (58.8%). Up to 80.2% agreed that the government should subsidise FP services for patients with medical reasons. Female students had higher perceived awareness (78.6% vs 61.2%, p-value= 0.003) and were more supportive towards FP subsidizing policies on medical students planning to pursue as a doctor and therefore delay their family planning than male students (15.7% vs 5.8%, p-value=0.017). Medical students who were not religious were more supportive towards egg freezing among single female in the general public before finding their other half (60.5% vs 47.9%, p-value=0.049) and also gamete freezing in career-focused female medical students (65.3% vs 41.2%, p-value<0.0001) and male medical students (40.3% vs 22.7%, p-value=0.003).ConclusionThis study highlighted the limited awareness and knowledge of FP among medical students. There is a strong need to increase education and exposure on FP in the medical curriculum to improve their knowledge, an issue prevalent worldwide. More involvement from the public healthcare sector and enhanced facilities including the establishment of FP specialist clinics are highly warranted. Ng, Yee Lee.Thesis M.Phil. The role of CPF in stabilizing and restructuring Singapore's economy

    No full text
148 p.In 1955, the Central Provident Fund (CPF) was set up to provide financial security for workers during retirement or when they are no longer able to work due to physical incapacity. CPF is a major part of Singapore's social security system based on savings and insurance. Over the years, it has taken care of not only a member's retirement, home-ownership and health care needs but also provided financial protection to CPF members and their families through its insurance schemes. Both the employer and employee contribute to the fund. The rates of contribution have been changed over the years so as to ensure that the employee accumulates sufficient funds for his retirement in real terms, taking into account Singapore's economic performance and expected inflation. Members are allowed to withdraw their CPF savings upon reaching age 55 and after setting aside a minimum sum in the retirement account.ACCOUNTANC

Beyond linguistic equivalence and performability: implications of five English versions of Dayu Shajia on xiqu translation

    No full text
M.Phil.Research and criticisms on xiqu translation have quite unequivocally focused on literary values for long. The performance dimension of xiqu as a unique art form is barely addressed apart from occasional discussions on ‘performability’. Many studies even reject completely the association between xiqu translation and the xiqu stage as relevant. It is mostly suggested in the existing discourse that xiqu translation should be assessed in the same way as the translation of other literary genres. However, while there are literati-authored xiqu plays that are renowned for their idea and diction, there are also performer-authored ones that inherently emphasize performing skills demanded on the actors. Many of them are selected for translation in recent large-scale translation projects, which prompts us to revisit the appropriateness of the literature-oriented approach for studying the translation of performance-oriented xiqu plays. This thesis proposes that a compatible methodology and evaluation framework should be developed for this particular kind of source text.In the current work, we selected a popular performer-authored play in jingju, Dayu Shajia, for case study. By studying thirteen Chinese play scripts and the actors’ own accounts, it is demonstrated that performer-authored xiqu texts are especially protean in nature. This is firstly because non-linguistic performance conventions on the stage require intersemiotic translation to get on the page. This inevitably involves intervention from the script-compilers based on their personal observations and language preference, as well as the backgrounds and expectations of potential target readers. Discrepancies in stage directions across versions consequently result. The second reason is the lack of definite authorship for plays in this tradition. Generations of xiqu actors have continuously revise the movements, the lyrics, and even the spoken lines and the plots of xiqu plays according to their own judgement. The open authorship has led to numerous and virtually unlimited versions of performer-authored xiqu plays. This specific feature of xiqu thus conveniently distinguishes it from other literary genres. It also offers a new angle for the study and evaluation of xiqu translation. On this basis, five translations of Dayu Shajia are then analyzed, with which we look into how xiqu translators and xiqu translation researchers are affected by this particular feature. By this study, we intend to uncover a previously neglected aspect in the field of xiqu translation, and to advocate the development and use of genre-specific approaches for the investigation of xiqu translation. Wong, Pui Yi.Thesis M.Phil. Factors influencing international students’ perceived value and satisfaction at private universities in Malaysia

    No full text
It is critical to investigate the major factors that influence the perceived value and satisfaction of international students in Malaysia, as the country has seen a decrease in international students since 2017 and strives to become an international education hub. This research aims to: (1) ascertain the level of satisfaction experienced by international students attending private universities (PrUs) in the Klang Valley; (2) identify factors and present a model that measures their influence on the perceived value and satisfaction of international students; and (3) propose policy recommendations to key stakeholders. An empirical study was conducted using a quantitative research methodology via physical survey using structured questionnaires. A total of 502 surveys from international students were collected from twelve private universities in the Klang Valley. The partial least squares structural equation modelling technique was employed to assess the measurement and structural model in validating the study model. Based on the empirical findings, the external environment, image, academic and non-academic constructs positively influence perceived value, which affects satisfaction. Results also confirm that the post-behavioural intentions of satisfied international students are word-of-mouth recommendations and loyalty. The results provided new perspectives on attracting and retaining international students to study in Malaysia. Theoretical, policy and practical implications are discussed.
