    Echoes of the Ancestors : Uncovering Bisaya Plant Wisdom in Limbang

    A culturally significant research initiative is currently taking place in northern Sarawak to document and safeguard the traditional ethnobotanical knowledge of the Bisaya community. Supported by a special grant from the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia YAB Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, the project represents an important contribution to the preservation of Malaysia’s intangible heritage while directly advancing several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). Led by Dr Dilah bin Tuah from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in collaboration with Associate Professor Dr Chong Shin from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), the study focuses on identifying and documenting traditional plant-related terms in the Bisaya language. These terms are part of a deeply rooted indigenous knowledge system that connects the community’s language, rituals, medicine, food practices and ecological understanding. Fieldwork conducted across several Bisaya villages in the Limbang district employed a community-based qualitative methodology. Through interviews with traditional healers, village elders and native speakers, researchers recorded over 100 unique ethnobotanical terms. Each term reflects the Bisaya people’s long-standing relationship with their environment and the spiritual symbolism attached to certain plants

    The rising demand for functional foods has sparked an interest in boosting the nutritional value of conventional condiments such as soy sauce. Recent soy sauce research has focused on enhancing functional gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) by microorganisms since the key inhibitory neurotransmitter provides various health benefits, including anti-anxiety and anti-stress effects. However, optimizing fermentation conditions to increase GABA production with microorganisms remains challenging, specifically, difficulty in balancing multiple fermentation variables such as pH, inoculum percentage, and agitation speed, which interact to impact GABA production levels. These complexities make it hard to achieve optimal conditions for producing a high-quality GABA soy sauce. Additionally, the existing scholarly literature on the sustainability of soy sauce production is relatively scattered. The primary goals of the present study were to determine the ideal fermentation conditions to maximize GABA concentration in soy sauce production using Response Surface Methodology (RSM), assess consumers’ acceptance of GABA soy sauce through sensory analysis, and design a sustainable soy sauce production via a systematic review. The fermentation conditions, including the percentage of bacterial inoculum (10, 15, and 20%), initial pH (3, 5, and 7), and agitation speed (100, 150, and 200 rpm), were optimized using RSM with a mixed culture containing Aspergillus oryzae strain NSK, Bacillus cereus strain KBC and Tetragenococcus halophilus strain KBC. The mixed cultures generated 128.69 g/L of GABA after 7 days of fermentation. Remarkably, 239.08 g/L of GABA was produced after 4 weeks of fermentation with 20% of inoculum, initial pH 7, and 100 rpm, which was iv 36% higher than non-optimized conditions (153.48 g/L). Meanwhile, the sensory analysis revealed that fermented GABA soy sauce received higher consumer acceptance (7.46) than the control (5.90) and commercial soy sauces (4.47). Consumer preference indicated that the starter culture offered a better umami taste while reducing the presence of bitter, sour, and salty tastes compared to the commercial products. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) analysis was performed to facilitate sustainable soy sauce production, applying inclusion criteria to the Scopus and Web of Science databases. The systematic review identified existing gaps in soy sauce fermentation research and proposed future research possibilities, with a particular emphasis on sustainable soy sauce technologies and techniques that could contribute to advancements in soy sauce production. This study proves that under optimal fermentation conditions determined by RSM statistical analysis, the mixed culture demonstrates a remarkable ability to generate high levels of GABA and greatly enhances consumer acceptability toward this GABA-enriched soy sauce. This study provides valuable insights for industry stakeholders interested in sustainable food production, highlighting the potential for health benefits and increased market viability

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Investigating Tangeretin Targeted Pathway by Chemical-Genetic Interaction in Yeast

    多氧甲基黃酮 (polymethoxyflavones, PMFs) 為柑橘類果皮中含多氧甲基的酚類物質,目前已知其具有廣泛的生理活性,包括抗癌與抗發炎等。先前有許多研究探討PMFs與水解PMFs的抗癌活性,唯目前為止,其在細胞中的作用目標仍不明確。因此,我們利用化合物-基因協調作用的概念,以酵母菌作為研究平台,發掘PMFs在細胞中的可能作用目標。研究顯示,PMFs維持基因穩定上無顯著作用,顯示PMFs不是透過提升細胞的DNA修復因子來達到其生理活性。利用化合物對酵母菌DNA修復基因缺失的突變株作篩選,我們發現sgs1基因突變株在色胺酸被限制的情況下對PMFs成員之一- 橘皮素 (tangeretin) 敏感,無論是在生長速度或是存活率被顯著被抑制。另外,sgs1突變菌株在橘皮素的介入下,其細胞週期會停滯在G1 / S phase,並提升了γH2A的量。透過基因晶片,我們發現橘皮素會抑制sgs1突變株之RNA合成相關的基因的表現量,並提高其含氮化合物與胺基酸的合成基因之表現。透過sgs1突變株對放射菌酮的測試,發現橘皮素並無直接抑制蛋白質合成的效果,反而卻拯救了sgs1與slx4為主的雙股修復相關基因突變株在色氨酸酸剔除或橘皮素介入下的敏感性。結果推測,橘皮素可能是透過抑制sgs1突變株的rRNA的形成,在色胺酸被限制的情況下,間接導致蛋白質合成不利,進而促使菌株死亡。此研究顯示橘皮素在抗癌途徑的可能機制,並發現胺基酸與DNA雙股斷裂修復過程可能存在某種互動關係,唯需進一步實驗驗證。Polymethoxyflavones (PMFs) is a dietary phytochemical and they have been widely investigated in the field of inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic with proven bioactivities but they actual functioning target in cells remain unclear. Here, we used the model of chemical-genetic interaction model, with budding yeast as platform, to screen the potential targets or pathways involved by PMFs. We found out that SGS1 gene deleted yeast is sensitive to tangeretin, one of a member of PMFs. sgs1 defective yeast showed lower growth rate, survival rate, delayed G1 and S phase and elevated γH2A level in cell cycle under tryptophan drop-out condition. Through microarray, we found out that tangeretin is potential to inhibit expression of RNA progression related genes and up-regulated nitrogen compounds and amino acid synthesis pathways of sgs1 defective cells. Data also showed that tangeretin is incapable to inhibit protein synthesis directly as cycloheximide do. Interestingly, cycloheximide rescued the sensitive- phenotype of sgs1 and slx4 defective cells under tryptophan depletion and tangeretin involved condition. Our results showed tangeretin is potential to suppress rRNA precession of sgs1 defective cells and resulting improper protein synthesis under tryptophan depletion condition. This result demonstrated the potential pathway of anti-carcinogenic effect played by tangeretin. Additionally, we also observed the potential of availability of relationship between amino acid balances and DNA double strains break repair pathways. However, further investigation is required for this observation

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
