Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Wenn "der Ursprung der Ungleichheit unter den Menschen" dem gesellschaftlichen Wandel nach variiert wird, welche soziologische Theorie kann zur Ungleichheitsanalyse der heutigen pluralisierten, unübersichtlichen Gesellschaften eine adäquate Konzeption geben? In der Soziologie bezieht sich die Theorieentwicklung der sozialen Ungleichheit auf die dualistische Perspektive, entweder strukturalistische oder subjektzentrierte. Der vorliegenden Arbeit liegt die Frage zugrunde, wie in der Ungleichheitsanalyse der "Zwischen-Weg" zwischen objektiven Lebensbedingungen und subjektiven Lebensstilen zu finden ist, jedoch nicht als "Entweder-Oder-Frage".
Die theoretische These bzw. das Interesse der vorliegenden Arbeit richtet sich gerade auf die wechselseitigen Beziehungen von gesellschaftlichen Strukturen und individuellen Handlungen. Um den komplementären Zusammenhang von beiden zu konzeptualisieren, nimmt die vorliegende Arbeit die zwei verschiedenen Lebensstilansätze als theoretische Grundlage: "die feinen Unterschiede" nach Bourdieu und "die Erlebnisgesellschaft" nach Schulze. "Die verfeinerten Unterschiede der Erlebnisgesellschaft" mit Hilfe einer empirischen Untersuchung zu erklären, ist eine der theoretischen Anregungen der vorliegenden Untersuchung.
Um diesen hypothetischen Ansatz empirisch zu inspizieren, wurde in dieser Arbeit das Freizeitverhalten in der koreanischen Gesellschaft auf der Grundlage von Lebensstilkonzeptionen untersucht. Zur empirischen Operationalisierung der lebensstilrelevanten Bereiche wurden die Dimensionen des Lebensstils auf vier Ebenen unterschieden: expressive, sozialstrukturelle, evaluative und distinktive Dimension. Anhand der Ergebnisse der empirischen Untersuchung lässt sich die vorliegende Arbeit in vier Punkten resümieren.
1. Zwischen Lebensstilen und sozialen Lagen sowie Werthaltungen: Die Ergebnisse dieser empirischen Forschung bestätigten, dass die Ausprägungen der Lebensstile mit sozialstrukturellen Merkmalen offensichtlich verbunden sind und mit Werthaltungen, die wiederum mit objektiven Lagen zusammenhängen, korrespondieren. Alltagsästhetische Orientierungen wurden stark auf die Merkmale Alter, Bildung, Geschlecht und Kinderzahl zurückgeführt. Vor allem hat für die alltagsästhetischen Praktiken die durch die Bildung erworbene Kulturfähigkeit an besonderer Bedeutung gewonnen. Auch kann von einer Entkopplung des Lebensstils von ökonomischen Sphären nicht die Rede sein, da bei der Lebensstilbildung die verfügbaren Ressourcen nach wie vor eine bestimmende Rolle spielen. Somit ist zu erklären, dass unterschiedliche bzw. ungleiche Lebensstile nicht allein mit vertikal verteilten Ressourcenausstattungen, sondern auch mit horizontal nebeneinander stehenden Merkmalen erklärt werden müssen.
2. Klassengesellschaft oder Erlebnisgesellschaft?: Auch wenn Bourdieu und Schulze jeweilig unterschiedliche Stellungen zum modernen Gesellschaftsbild einnehmen, hier eine strukturbedingte Klassengesellschaft und dort eine subjektzentrierte Erlebnisgesellschaft, dennoch darf die entscheidende Gemeinsamkeit von beiden nicht übersehen werden; die Gesellschaftstheorie von beiden basiert grundsätzlich auf einer Kulturanalyse und versucht somit zu zeigen, welche Möglichkeit in der Verhältnisbestimmung zwischen Sozialstruktur und Kultur in der sozialen Ungleichheitsforschung besteht.
3. Lebensstile zur Ungleichheitsanalyse noch aktuell oder passé?: Wegen des Rückganges des Wohlstandes können die Bedeutungen der Lebensstilanalyse für die soziale Ungleichheit nicht reduziert werden. Denn der Ungleichheitsdiskurs der unterschiedlichen Lebensstile entstand nicht aus den Interessen an gegenwärtigen Überflussgesellschaften, sondern befindet sich schon in den Knappheitsgesellschaften wie in der Zeit Webers oder Veblens. Der Lebensstilansatz gilt nicht nur für hochentwickelte Wohlstandsgesellschaften, sondern kann abgesehen vom Zustand gesellschaftlicher Entwicklung jeder Gesellschaft zur Sozialstrukturanalyse angewandt werden.
Summa summarum: Es kann keine befriedigende Klärung des komplexen Verhältnisses von Sozialstruktur und Kultur geben, da sie unterschiedlichen Logiken gehorchen: Sozialstruktur objektiver, materieller Logik, dagegen Kultur subjektiver, ideeller Logik. Dennoch sollte man bei einer Forschung der Sozialstruktur berücksichtigen, dass sich die beiden Bereiche gegenseitig beeinflussen und in einer untrennbaren Wechselbeziehung stehen, weil Handeln bzw. Lebensstil eines Menschen weder allein aus strukturellen, situativen Imperativen noch aus rein individuellen, selbstbestimmten Wahlen sozialer Wahrnehmung, sondern aus dialektischen, mutuellen Wirkungen resultieren

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
