    Wafer-Scale Multilayer Fabrication for Silk Fibroin-Based Microelectronics

    Silk fibroin is an excellent candidate for biomedical implantable devices because of its biocompatibility, controllable biodegradability, solution processability, flexibility, and transparency. Thus, fibroin has been widely explored in biomedical applications as biodegradable films as well as functional microstructures. Although there exists a large number of patterning methods for fibroin thin films, multilayer micropatterning of fibroin films interleaved with metal layers still remains a challenge. Herein, we report a new wafer-scale multilayer microfabrication process named aluminum hard mask on silk fibroin (AMoS), which is capable of micropatterning multiple layers composed of both fibroin and inorganic materials (e.g., metal and dielectrics) with high-precision microscale alignment. To the best of our knowledge, our AMoS process is the first demonstration of wafer-scale multilayer processing of both silk fibroin and metal micropatterns. In the AMoS process, aluminum deposited on fibroin is first micropatterned using conventional ultraviolet (UV) photolithography, and the patterned aluminum layer is then used as a mask to pattern fibroin underneath. We demonstrate the versatility of our fabrication process by fabricating fibroin microstructures with different dimensions, passive electronic components composed of both fibroin and metal layers, and functional fibroin microstructures for drug delivery. Furthermore, because one of the crucial advantages of fibroin is biocompatibility, we assess the biocompatibility of our fabrication process through the culture of highly susceptible primary neurons. Because the AMoS process utilizes conventional UV photolithography, the principal advantages of our process are multilayer fabrication with high-precision alignment, high resolution, wafer-scale large area processing, no requirement for chemical modification of the protein, and high throughput and thus low cost, all of which have not been feasible with silk fibroin. Therefore, the proposed fabrication method is a promising candidate for batch fabrication of functional fibroin microelectronics (e.g., memristors and organic thin film transistors) for next-generation implantable biomedical applications.

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Streamlined Specimen Purification for Rapid COVID-19 Diagnosis Using Positively Charged Polymer Thin Film-Coated Surfaces and Chamber Digital PCR

    The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic demands rapid and straightforward diagnostic tools to prevent early-stage viral transmission. Although nasopharyngeal swabs are a widely used patient sample collection method for diagnosing COVID-19, using these samples for diagnosis without RNA extraction increases the risk of obtaining false-positive and -negative results. Thus, multiple purification steps are necessary, which are time-consuming, generate significant waste, and result in substantial sample loss. To address these issues, we developed surface-modified polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tubes using the tertiary aminated polymer poly-(2-dimethylaminomethylstyrene) (pDMAMS) via initiated chemical vapor deposition. Introducing the clinical samples into the pDMAMS-coated tubes resulted in approximately 100% RNA capture efficiency within 25 min, which occurred through electrostatic interactions between the positively charged pDMAMS surface and the negatively charged RNA. The captured RNA is then detected via chamber digital PCR, enabling a sensitive, accurate, and rapid diagnosis. Our platform provides a simple and efficient RNA extraction and detection strategy that allows detection from 22 nasopharyngeal swabs and 21 saliva specimens with 0% false negatives. The proposed method can facilitate the diagnosis of COVID-19 and contribute to the prevention of early-stage transmission.

    A high-resolution lensless fluorescence imaging system using membrane deflection for reducing gap between samples and image sensor

    This paper reports on a high-resolution lensless fluorescence imaging system using membrane deflection for reducing the gap between fluorescent samples and a CMOS image sensor array. The presented system applied the principle of the total internal reflection of excitation light inside a PDMS chip to minimize the exposure of excitation light to the image sensor. We integrated a very thin (5.5 μm) PDMS membrane as a flexible deflector, which allowed for significant reduction of the gap (∼20 μm) inevitably created during the conventional packaging (i.e., wire bonding) of image sensors. In the fabricated system, we achieved minimum distance of 7.5 μm between fluorescent samples and an image sensor array. This reduced gap almost directly corresponds to a resolution as high as ∼7.5 μm, based on the point spread function (PSF)
