    Dynamical path-planning algorithm of a mobile robot: Local minima problem and nonstationary environments

    A dynamical local path-planning algorithm of an autonomous mobile robot available for moving obstacle avoidance as well as stationary obstacle avoidance using artificial pressure and nonlinear friction is described. The dynamical path-planning algorithm is considered to adequately accommodate the mobile robot to a dynamic situation of a path-planning nature. Artificial pressure is just a conceptual idea and a mimicry of the real physical pressure. It can be thought of as a density gradient in the neighborhood of the mobile robot. Together with the previous virtual force field (VFF) method, the path of the mobile robot is a solution of a path-planning equation. Local minima problems in stationary environments are solved by introducing nonlinear friction into the chaotic neuron. Due to the nonlinear friction, the proposed path-planner reveals chaotic dynamics in some parameter regions. This new path-planner is feasible in guiding, on real-time, the mobile robot to avoid stationary obstacles and reach the goal. Computer simulations are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm

    Direct search approach to optimum spiral column design

    An optimum design algorithm for spiral columns is formulated based on the structural behaviour of spiral columns. A brief review of the reinforced concrete (RC) structural optimization and the spiral column behaviour is presented. The sections of spiral columns which satisfy code requirements are stored in the database and are manipulated by one major variable, i.e. the section identification number (N) which is linked with all other design variables, such as overall section dimensions, steel ratios, positions of reinforcement and resistant capacities, cost per unit length, etc. In design procedures, a continuous or preliminary solution is obtained first, based on regression curve equations, and then an effective direct search for the discrete optimum section is carried out. The convergence and reliability of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated through numerical examples

    Photodissociation effects on the electron density and on FTIR measurements in a BTMSM/Ar discharge

    For precise measurements of the absolute electron density in a bis-trimethylsilymethane (BTMSM) and argon plasma, the authors adapted a wave cutoff method and used the plasma frequency. The films were deposited on a p-type Si(1 0 0) substrate by means of UV-assisted inductively coupled plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate the bonding configuration of the SiCH films. With UV illumination, the electron density was found to increase in the low power region and decrease in the high power region. The peak intensity of Si-CH3 decreases with UV illumination under all conditions. Moreover, when the UV source illuminates the plasma, the peak intensity of CH2 increases whereas the peak intensity of CH3 decreases

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    INFLUENCE OF TIAS PRECIPITATE FORMATION ON MORPHOLOGY DEGRADATION OF THE TISI2/AS-DOPED POLYSILICON SYSTEM

    The formation of TiAs precipitates between TiSi2 with C54 structure and arsenic-doped polysilicon and the influence of TiAs and silicon resulting from the reaction TiSi2 + As --&gt; TiAs + 2Si on layer morphology degradation have been studied. The formation of TiAs precipitates has been revealed by X-ray diffraction in a sample annealed at 900-degrees-C for 60 min and a sequential increase in sheet resistance with increasing annealing time has been observed. Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy of the sample annealed for 60 min has shown irregular-shaped protrusions. Point analyses by Auger electron spectroscopy and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy of the same sample have shown the presence of TiAs precipitates and extra silicon near the TiSi2 - polysilicon interface under the protrusion area. From the results it has been found that TiAs precipitates and extra silicon resulting from the reaction TiSi2 + As --&gt; TiAs + 2Si lead to morphology degradation of this system

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
