Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Predicting the lesion evolution observed in the acute phase is a clinical challenge. This question is currently being addressed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Two modalities are mainly used : diffusion imaging which shows the extent of cytotoxic edema and dynamic perfusion imaging which shows the hemodynamic state of the tissues. Diffusion MRI is known to be the image with the greatest predictive potential for detecting the area of irreversible infarct. An open question is the contribution of acute perfusion MRI to achieve this prediction. Several machine learning approaches have been tested and turned out to be effective, but results show that the problem is far from being resolved : the prediction task remains complex, since visible lesions in the acute phase may change up to a month later. The thesis is organized around the following two questions : (1) what is the value of perfusion imaging for ischemic stroke prediction ? (2) how to merge perfusion and diffusion MRI within a machine learning model ?The first part of the thesis answers question (1) in two sub-parts : in a first sub-part, we will demonstrate the advantage of learning directly from raw perfusion imaging rather than on extracted parametric maps. We will then discuss different methods for encoding raw perfusion, and different models capable of extracting its relevant information to predict the final infarct. These first experiences will also allow us to understand which determining physiological factors impact the learning process. In a second sub-section, we will propose to train models on simulated raw perfusion data, and to test them on real data. This simulated data comes from a published physical simulator, to which we will suggest improvements. In a second step, to answer question (2), we will propose models with different data fusion strategies. Firstly, we will propose for the prediction task a naive Bayes model that merges lately the different input modalities. In a second step, we will explore in more depth a neural network model that merges lately the input modalities. Through this neural network, we will discuss the impact of the homogeneity in the training dataset : in particular, physiological parameters allowing its stratification ; Finally, we will aim for a model explicability by detailing its prediction failures associated with the complex course of the disease. More specifically, we will focus on acute diffusion lesion reversal, a recurrent cause of prediction failure. As an opening, we will study the possibility of predicting patient clinical state after stroke by integrating data related to the “chronic” phase of the disease. With the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT), more and more people have a smartphone and connected objects relaying information on someone activity and physiology. We will explore how these new sensors can ensure better follow-up and support for patients after stroke, during their rehabilitatio

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion : role of inflammation

Cette approche est susceptible de générer de nouvelles perspectives thérapeutiquesNtravenous thrombolysis and, more recently, mechanical thrombectomy have improved acute ischemic stroke management in improving restoration of brain perfusion and the preservation of the penumbra and thus functional outcome. Despite early recanalisation, a poor clinical outcome likely related to ischemia-reperfusion damages is frequently observed. Post-ischemic inflammatory response may contribute to these damages. To date, little is known about the kinetics of this process, especially in the setting of mechanical thrombectomy, whereas a better understanding of that phenomenom would allow a more targeted neuroprotective approach. Here, we proposed to assess the relationship between serum markers of inflammation and key prognostic factors, through an original approach focused on patients treated with mechanical thrombectomy. For this, we did a sequential assessement of both serum markers of inflammation and ischemic damages on magnetic resonance imaging within the HIBISCUS-STROKE cohort (CoHort of Patients to Identify Biological and Imaging markerS of CardiovascUlar Outcomes in Stroke). In the first part of our work, we aimed to clarify the relationship between post-ischemic inflammation and collateral circulation status, as the latter impacts the timing of tissue loss and response to reperfusion therapies in acute ischemic stroke. We have etablished that low Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and high Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 levels were associated with good pretreatment collateral status. In the second part of our work, we assessed the relationship between MMP-9, a proteolytic enzyme involved in the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier, and the risk of hemorrhagic transformation and infarct growth. We have identified that MMP-9 peaked at 6 hours and that its level predicted hemorrhagic transformation, mainly minor, and infarct growth. In the third part, we aimed to investigate the relationship between post-ischemic inflammation and futile recanalization, defined as poor functional outcome despite successful recanalization and occurring in half of the patients. We observed that interleukin 6 peaked at 24 hours and was a marker of futile recanalization. HIBISCUS-STROKE cohort gave us the opportunity to assess the relationship between serum markers of inflammation and key prognostic factors in the setting of mechanical thrombectomy. This original approach pave the way for new perspectives in terms of neuroprotectio
