CHO microRNA engineering is growing up : recent successes and future challenges
No full textmicroRNAs with their ability to regulate complex pathways that control cellular behavior and phenotype have been proposed as potential targets for cell engineering in the context of optimization of biopharmaceutical production cell lines, specifically of Chinese Hamster Ovary cells. However, until recently, research was limited by a lack of genomic sequence information on this industrially important cell line. With the publication of the genomic sequence and other relevant data sets for CHO cells since 2011, the doors have been opened for an improved understanding of CHO cell physiology and for the development of the necessary tools for novel engineering strategies. In the present review we discuss both knowledge on the regulatory mechanisms of microRNAs obtained from other biological models and proof of concepts already performed on CHO cells, thus providing an outlook of potential applications of microRNA engineering in production cell lines

No full textDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2010Through a dialogical relation between poems and song lyrics, and the socio-political contexts which surrounded these texts, this research discusses the resonance that North American poet, Allen Ginsberg, had over the Brazilian musical movement, the Tropicália. The corpora are the poems "Howl" (1956), "America" (1956), "Supermarket in California" (1955), "Sunflower Sutra" (1955), "Song" (1954), and "Wild Orphan" (1952), written by Allen Ginsberg, and the songs "Batmacumba" (1968), composed by Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil, "Baby" (1968), composed by Caetano Veloso, "Geléia Geral" (1968), composed by Gilberto Gil and Torquato Neto, "Alegria, Alegria" (1967), composed by Caetano Veloso, and "Domingo no Parque" (1967), composed by Gilberto Gil. The main theoretical and critical parameters of this research include: Mikhail Bakhtin and his reflections on intertextuality; James J. Farrell, who believes that the American counterculture began with the Beats; Claudio Willer, who stresses the importance of Allen Ginsberg to the Beat movement, as well as to the birth of the American counterculture; Christopher Dunn, who emphasizes the historical, social, and political relevance of the Tropicália; and Celso Favaretto, who discusses in depth the complexity of most of the Tropicália songs. Based on such parameters, this research suggests that the life and work of Allen Ginsberg had great resonance over the creation of the Tropicália.Através de uma relação dialógica entre poesia e letras de música e o contexto sócio-político que circundava tais textos, este estudo discute a ressonância que o poeta Norte Americano, Allen Ginsberg, teve sobre o movimento musical Brasileiro, a Tropicália. A corpora são os poemas "Howl" (1956), "America" (1956), "Supermarket in California" (1955), "Sunflower Sutra" (1955), "Song" (1954), e "Wild Orphan" (1952), escritos por Allen Ginsberg, e as músicas "Batmacumba" (1968), composta por Caetano Veloso, e Gilberto Gil, "Baby" (1968), composta por Caetano Veloso, "Geléia Geral" (1968), composta por Gilberto Gil e Torquato Neto, "Alegria, Alegria" (1967), composta por Caetano Veloso, e "Domingo no Parque" (1967), composta por Gilberto Gil. Earnings forecast errors: Comparative evidence from the Pacific-Basin capital markets
No full textThis paper examines the analysts earnings forecasts in Pacific-Basin capital markets vis-à-vis those of the U.S. We first compare forecast errors across countries and then perform regression analyses to identify the factors that explain differences in forecast errors. The results suggest that there are substantial differences in forecast errors between most of the Pacific-Basin capital markets and the more established capital markets such as the U.S. and Japan. These differences significantly decrease as the forecast horizon approaches the earnings reporting month. The regression results identify some macroeconomic and firm specific factors that explain the differences in forecast errors

No full textThis study examines financial analysts forecasts of a firms earnings for foreign companies. We examine two issues. First, we examine the magnitude of analysts forecast errors across fifteen sample countries including the U.S. The differences of forecast errors are compared both cross-sectionally and across time during the year. Then, we regress the forecast errors on certain firm-specific and accounting environment factors. The regression identifies the factors that explain the differences in the forecast errors across firms and countries.
We find that analysts forecast errors significantly differ across companies. The differences are largely attributed to firm specific factors such as firm size, dispersion of forecast errors, and industry factors. However, after controlling for these factors, the differences in accounting practices in measurement and disclosure are found to significantly explain the variations in forecast errors across countries
