    Compositional analysis of soybean event IND-ØØ41Ø-5

    Soybean (Glycine max L.) is the world’s largest source of protein feed and the second largest source of vegetable oil. Water restriction is the main limiting factor to achieve maximum soybean yields. Therefore, development of varieties that maintain yield under environmental stresses is a major objective of soybean breeding programs. The HaHB4 (Helianthus annuus homeobox 4) gene from sunflower encodes for a transcription factor involved in the plant´s tolerance to environmental stress. The introduction of HaHB4 in soybean led to the development of event IND-ØØ41Ø-5 (HB4® soybean), which displayed higher yield in environments having low productivity potential, compared with the parental control variety. Compositional analyses of soybean event IND-ØØ41Ø-5 were conducted both in Argentina and the United Sates. A total of 44 components were analyzed in grain and 9 components in forage. Based on the results of these studies it was concluded that soybean event IND-ØØ41Ø-5 was compositionally equivalent to its non-transgenic parental control.Fil: Chiozza, Mariana V..     Exploring soybean aphid (Aphis glycines Matsumura) resistance germplasm across the Midwest and its relationship with free amino acids accumulation in leaves

    The soybean aphid (Aphis glycines) has rapidly spread through the Midwest causing consistent yield losses since its introduction. In an effort to find sources of resistance to this pest, several plant introductions have been screened in controlled laboratory conditions or in few locations under field conditions. In order to better characterize different soybean resistant lines we measured resistance on 18 soybean varieties at different locations across the Midwest in two years. Clustering of lines with similar performance was conducted. Correlation analyses between aphid pressure determined by different locations and aphid infestation of groups of lines as determined by the cluster showed no genotypic by environment interaction. Furthermore, we selected one soybean line with known source of resistance (Rag1 gene) and a related line without the Rag1 gene. Consistency of the resistance conferred by Rag1 was tested in terms of yield losses along different levels of aphid infestations at field conditions. Even though the resistant line showed high levels of aphid infestation it did not show yield losses. These results suggest that the Rag1 gene may confer not only resistant to soybean aphid (aphid numbers per plant) but also tolerance to this pest (not significant yield loss when infested). In an effort to understand the Rag1 mechanism of resistance we tested for differences in free amino acid composition of leaves in the Rag1 genotype and its susceptible related line at three soybean developmental stages. We detected constitutive differences in amino acid composition between these two lines, and also differences in induced responses in the presence of aphids. The amino acids detected in this study could be selected to evaluate their putative role in aphids growth and reproduction

    Comparative prediction accuracy of hyperspectral bands for different soybean crop variables: From leaf area to seed composition

    Prediction of soybean seed yield and seed composition at a plot scale before harvesting has potential uses in breeding programs for early-season selection and harvesting decisions. Reflectance information from hyperspectral bands have been mainly used for predicting yield and other crop variables. However, an analysis comparing the prediction accuracy among different crop variables such as LAI, biomass, seed yield and seed protein and oil, when using hyperspectral bands as predictors, is lacking. Our objective is to rank the prediction accuracy among different crop variables using hyperspectral bands captured at different timepoints during the growing season. Our hypothesis is based on a physiological framework where crop variables that are closely associated with light interception (i.e., LAI) would be best predicted by the hyperspectral signal (350 nm to 2500 nm) than variables that involve more physiological processes (i.e., biomass, seed yield and seed protein and oil) for their determination. The dataset used for testing this hypothesis involved different genotypes, environments, and management practices. We used Partial Least Squares regression with cross-validation to test the association between the observed variables and the hyperspectral bands. Our results showed that LAI can be best predicted using reflectance information, and suggest that hyperspectral bands are necessary but not sufficient to improve the prediction of other crop variables such as biomass, seed yield, and seed composition traits.This is a manuscript of an article published as Chiozza, Mariana V., Kyle A.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
