In the case of Agamben, the remnant (that which remains) is disruptive and destabilising of present institutions; in the case of Derrida the revenant, the spectre, promises a future that is open. This reading of the two theories suggests that Derrida's response to the question of politics and violence is more persuasive than Agamben's. But the abstraction of his argument, like the tensions and contradictions in Agamben's, means that we are not hereby furnished with the resources to think politically about violence

    Determination of Cystic Fibrosis Frequency Among Newborns Diagnosed with Meconium Ileus and other Bowel Obstruction

    The author participated in this study as a medical student in the Senior Scholars research program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.Background:The purpose of this study is to determine the incidence of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) among newborns with meconium ileus (a form of neonatal bowel obstruction). It has long been believed that upwards of 80% of newborns with meconium ileus have CF; however, recently 65% of newborns who have been reported to the New England Newborn Screening Program (NENSP) as having meconium ileus have screened negative for CF by the state newborn screen. Objectives:This project is aimed at determining the explanation for this apparent discrepancy, and at confirmation that CF newborn screen negative infants with bowel obstruction have had further testing to confirm or deny a CF diagnosis. Upon its completion we hope that this project will further aid in our understanding of CF, its clinical manifestations and the effectiveness of the newborn screening program. In addition, it will educate both the subspecialist and primary care physicians regarding follow-up of neonates with diagnoses of bowel obstruction and/or CF. Methods:This study will involve reviewing the charts of Massachusetts newborns born between 02/1/1999 and 01/25/2005 who were reported to the NENSP as having meconium ileus or other bowel obstruction (n ~150). The chart of each subject will be reviewed for clinical, laboratory, pathologic, and radiologic evidence that supports or refutes the diagnosis of both meconium ileus and CF. Results:Research completed thus far has identified these babies by review of the newborn screening database. The charts of babies born at UMMHC (n 22) were reviewed and indicate that only rarely is the diagnosis of meconium ileus made without proper clinical, radiologic and/or pathologic data. However, a trend noticed in the UMMHC babies was that a general diagnosis of bowel obstrutction and/or meconium plugs (n 15) was more common, and only two babies were officially given the diagnosis of meconium ileus. Mutational analysis and/or sweat testing revieled three babies with the diagnosis of CF. Of the two babies diagnosed with MI, one was later diagnosed with CF. Review of UMMHC charts also showed a lack of appropriate out-patient follow-up; three babies underwent a sweat test to confirm or deny the diagnosis of CF. Primary Conclusion:Review of newborns at UMMHC indicate that the diganosis of MI was only made when sufficient and appropriate evidence was present; the majority of babies were diagnosed with alternative forms of bowel obstruction, most notably meconium plugs. Of the babies diagnosed with MI only one of the two were subsequently diagnosed with CF, however the insufficient number of cases makes statistical review impossible at this time. The most notable conclusion that has been revieled by babies born at UMMHC was that only three babies received appropriate follow-up. Any newborn diagnosed with bowel obstruction should undergo a sweat test to confirm or deny the diagnosis of CF; this is particularly important given that the genetic testing only uncovers approximately 90% of cases. A number of studies have shown the importance of early diganosis of CF, particluarly in regards to early childhood growth, thus appropriate follow-up testing is critical for each of these babies

    Myotis muricola [Gray, 1846] Vespertilio muricola Gray, 1846: 4; NEPAL (Brian Houghton Hodgson, collector; Type unknown) [215]. Myotis muricola [8]. Common English name: Asian Whiskered Myotis Barcode Index Number: DNA barcodes recorded as M. muricola are associated with two BINs, BOLD: AAA 8747 and BOLD: AAA 8748, but there are no DNA barcodes from Peninsular Malaysia. A DNA barcode of M. cf. muricola (RONP 037-14) from Peninsular Malaysia but is not associated with any BIN due to its short sequence length (< 500 bp). Remarks: Francis and Hill [214] commented that M. muricola from localities across Southeast Asia exhibit moderate morphological variation. Wiantoro et al. [216] suggested M. muricola was a species complex with 31.5% divergence in cytochrome b mtDNA between (i) M. muricola Western (including DNA sequences from Krakatau, Bali, Lombok, Sumba, Sumbawa, Flores Lembata and Pantar) and (ii) M. muricola Eastern (including DNA sequences from Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Phillipines and Asian mainland). M. muricola Eastern exhibited 9.5% divergence in cytochrome b mtDNA within the group whereas M. muricola Western exhibited 8% divergence within the group. M. muricola Western is further segregated into two subgroups with 7.2% divergence in cytochrome b mtDNA: (i) Sumatra-Asian subgroup (consists of DNA sequences from Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia and Asian mainland) and (ii) Bornean subgroup (consists of DNA sequences from Sarawak, Sabah and Kalimantan). M. muricola was previously considered to be a subspecies of M. mystacinus [23, 213], but Hill [217] reviewed the status of M. mystacinus and stated that the form occurring in Peninsular Malaysia represents M. muricola muricola. Similarly, Corbet and Hill [9] concluded that M. mystacinus was not present in Malaysia and the taxon occurring in Peninsular Malaysia represents M. muricola. Wiantoro et al. [216] reportedthat M. mystacinus and M. muricola Western are 17.1% divergent in cytochrome b mtDNA, while M. mystacinus and M. muricola Eastern showed 26% divergence. After the division of M. muricola and M. mystacinus, M. mystacinus was thought to only occur in Europe until Bates et al. [218] recorded the species in Myanmar. Further surveys are required to determine whether the reports of M. mystacinus in Peninsular Malaysia represents M. muricola or whether both species exist sympatrically in Peninsular Malaysia. The BIN, BOLD:AAA8748 contains DNA barcodes recorded as M. muricola and M. ater (see remarks on M. ater and Fig 6). The species were previously considered to be conspecific [213] but were later recognised as distinct based on body size variation [217] which occurred sympatrically in Malaysia [214]. We did not include the DNA barcode recorded as M. cf. muricola (RONP037-14) from Peninsular Malaysia in our NJ analysis due to its short sequence length, but noted that the DNA barcode did not cluster with DNA barcodes of M. muricola on a taxon ID tree generated in BOLD (hence “ cf. muricola ”).     The regulation of labour and the state in the Sudan : a study of the relationship between the stage of social and economic development and the autonomy of labour relations law

    The thesis is a study of labour regulation and the State in the Sudan in the light of a general theoretical conception of labour law and the State. The first Chapter defines the concepts of analysis that are used throughout the study, isolates the "essential" properties of the Capitalist State and Law from the historically concrete forms which they assume in a particular society and distinguishes between processes which influence development of the form of law and others which influence its sociological development. Drawing on the analysis in Chapter I, Chapter II exposes the inter-relationship between the Sudanese social formation, State and Law and the implication of this inter-relationship for both the form and substance of labour relations law. Chapters III, IV and V are specific verifications of the hypothesis regarding the inter-relationship between the State and labour relations law in the Sudan and that regarding the development of the "substance" and "ideology" of law in general. The thesis considers law as an empirically-founded discipline. But, it distinguishes between various types of empirical facts about law corresponding with respective semi-autonomous social levels at which law asserts its existence. The research method followed describes the empirical facts about law at the particular level and, in order to determine the epistemological significance of these facts, analytically relates them to empirical facts at other levels. Wherever used in the thesis the term "theory" signifies either this methodological procedure of analysing the inter-connection of empirical facts at a certain level and their inter-relation with other facts at other levels, or the substantive generalizations about law which findings at these various levels would allow. I consider my application of this methodology to the study of labour rela tions law, the historical dimension this application introduces in socio-economic analysis of this law, the criticism of certain Marxist and other sociological conceptions of law it enables, and the socio-histor ical relativity of the "substance" and "ideology" of law it reveals as original contributions to the knowledge of labour law. The compilation and evaluation within the framework of the thesis of empirical materials on industrial relations in the Sudan are likewise original contribution to the knowledge of Sudanese "labour law" and labour law in general

    Fluorescence enhancement of curcumin upon inclusion into cucurbituril

    The effect of the macrocyclic host compounds cucurbit[n]urils (Qn), with n = 5 - 7, on the fluorescence of the biologically active compound curcumin has been studied. Curcumin, the main constituent of the Indian spice turmeric, is of growing interest because of its wide-ranging pharmaceutical properties. This compound forms strong 2:1 host-guest inclusion complexes with Q6 (the original cucurbituril), with an overall equilibrium constant of (1.9 +/- 0.8) X 10(4) M-2. It is postulated that a Q6 host partially encapsulates each of the two phenyl groups at the ends of the curcumin molecule. The difference in magnitude of the equilibrium constants K-1 (72 +/- 2 M-1) and K-1 (260 +/- 120 M-1) for stepwise encapsulation of the two ends of the curcumin molecule indicates that encapsulation by the first Q6 significantly alters its entire electronic structure, resulting in a more favorable second encapsulation. A very large enhancement of the fluorescence of curcumin results from this complex formation, on the order of 5.0; this is a significant fraction of the polarity sensitivity factor (PSF) of 39 measured for curcumin, that is the ratio of fluorescence intensity in ethanol vs. water. Surprisingly, no such enhancement could be observed in the case of Q7, indicating that the interactions between the guest and the host cavity are not favorable in this case, contrary to expectations.     Fluorescence enhancement of curcumin upon inclusion into parent and modified cyclodextrins

    The effect of alpha-, beta-, and gamma-cyclodextrin (CD) and their hydroxygropylated (HP) derivatives on the solubility and fluorescence of the compound curcumin has been studied. Curcumin, the main constituent of the Indian spice turmeric, is of growing interest due to its wide-ranging pharmaceutical properties. All of these six cyclodextrins significantly increase the aqueous solubility of curcumin, with the greatest solubility observed in HP-gamma-CD. Curcumin forms 2:1 host-guest inclusion complexes with these cyclodextrins, with the strongest complexes formed in the case of HP-beta-CD. These 2:1 complexes are postulated to form when a cyclodextrin host encapsulates each of the two phenyl rings at the ends of the curcumin molecule. The equilibrium constant for encapsulation by the second cyclodextrin host is significantly smaller than that for the first in each case, probably a result of steric bulk of the first cyclodextrin, with deep inclusion of the curcumin molecule, hindering encapsulation by the second cyclodextrin host. In fact, in the case of beta-CD, a 1: 1 host:guest model fit the data just as well, or better than, the 2:1 model. In the case of gamma-CD and HP-gamma-CD, the initial 1:1 complex formed was found to be less fluorescent than the free curcumin; this is postulated to be a result of inclusion of a folded curcumin molecule, which breaks the conjugation along the length of the molecule and hence greatly reduces its fluorescence quantum yield.     An integrated mathematical epithelial cell model for airway surface liquid regulation by mechanical forces

    A robust method based on reverse engineering was utilized to construct the ion-channel conductance functions for airway epithelial sodium channels (ENaC), the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), and calcium-activated chloride channels (CaCC). The ion-channel conductance models for both normal (NL) and cystic fibrosis (CF) airway epithelia were developed and then coupled to an adenosine triphosphate (ATP) metabolism model and a fluid transport model (collectively called the integrated cell model) to investigate airway surface liquid (ASL) volume regulation and hence mucus concentration, by mechanical forces in NL and CF human airways. The epithelial cell models for NL and CF required differences in Cl− secretion (decreased in CF) and Na+ absorption (raised in CF) to reproduce behaviors similar to in vitro epithelial cells exposed to mechanical forces (cyclic shear stress, cyclic compressive pressure and cilial strain) and selected modulators of ion channels and ATP release. The epithelial cell models were then used to investigate the effects of mechanical forces and evaporative flux on ASL and mucus homeostasis in both NL and CF airway epithelia. Because of reduced CF ASL volumes, CF mucus concentrations increased and produced a greater dependence of ASL volume regulation on cilia-mucus-ATP release interactions in CF than NL epithelial nodules. Similarly, the CF model was less tolerant to evaporation induced ASL volume reduction at all ATP release rates than the NL model. Consequently, this reverse engineered model appears to provide a robust tool for investigating CF pathophysiology and novel therapies

    Simulations of a self propelled autonomous underwater vehicle

    The missions being proposed for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), by both marine scientists and industry, are becoming increasingly complex and challenging. In order to meet these demands the next generation of AUVs will need to be faster, operate for longer and be more manoeuvrable than existing vehicles. It is therefore vital that the hydrodynamic forces and moments acting on a self propelled manoeuvring AUV can be predicted accurately at the initial design stage. The flow around a typical AUV is both turbulent and three dimensional with significant interactions between the hull, propeller and control surfaces. An unsteady computational fluid dynamics analysis based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations is too expensive for AUV design. In order to capture the action of the propeller at an acceptable computational cost, a novel method of coupling a commercial RANS solver with a body force propeller model based on blade element momentum theory has been developed. This discretises the propeller plane into a series of radial and circumferential sectors. The local axial and tangential inflow conditions at each sector of the propeller plane can then be considered. This allows analysis of non-uniform propeller inflow conditions due to the interaction of hull, propeller and control surfaces. During a manoeuvre the hull boundary layer may separate due to the adverse pressure gradient, resulting in free vortex sheets which roll up to form a pair of body vortices. An adaptive mesh strategy is required to ensure a suitable mesh structure and density to capture these flow features. Modifications to a vortex capture algorithm (VORTFIND) are proposed, optimising it as a tool for identifying the path of vortex structures. This enables it to be used as part of an iterative meshing strategy, capturing vortical flow features more accurately and consequently their influence on the pressure loading experienced by the hull. To demonstrate the pertinence of the numerical methods developed in this work a series of case studies has been analysed. These include: determining the hydrodynamic derivatives of an AUV, propeller-rudder interaction studies, steady state manoeuvring performance of the self propelled KVLCC2, and in-service straight line performance prediction of Autosub 3. These highlight the roles of the numerical methodologies in the design process for future AUVs.
