Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. E-mail: [email protected]: La apendicitis aguda es una de las patologías quirúrgicas más frecuentes en pediatría y la apendicectomía un procedimiento históricamente probado para su tratamiento. Sin embargo, se ha llamado la atención sobre la morbilidad y costos que implican los casos de apendicectomías no terapéuticas (ANT). Realizamos un estudio para determinar la proporción de ANT en nuestro hospital, analizar sus características y plantear hipótesis de trabajo que nos permitan disminuir su incidencia.
Métodos: Se realizó un análisis retrospectivo incluyendo todos los pacientes que fueron intervenidos quirúrgicamente desde el 1/1/13 hasta el 31/12/13 con diagnóstico clínico presuntivo de apendicitis aguda, en el Hospital Pediátrico del Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell. Se analizaron la edad, el sexo, la vía de abordaje, los hallazgos intra-operatorios, el diagnóstico anátomo-patológico y el uso y los resultados del hemograma y la ecografía.
Resultados: En el período mencionado se realizaron 287 apendicectomías en pacientes con diag-nóstico de apendicitis aguda, de los cuales 146 (50,87%) fueron operados por medio de un abordaje convencional y 141 (49,13%) por abordaje laparoscópico. El índice de ANT fue de 10,1% siendo similares las tasas para ambas vías de abordaje (10,27% convencional vs 9,92% laparoscópica). Por otra parte, se evidenció una mayor incidencia de ANT en el sexo femenino (16,6% vs 5,8%). Respecto a la franja etaria, la tasa de ANT fue mayor entre los pacientes de 11-15 años(12,19%), mientras que para las edades comprendidas entre 6-10 años fue de 8,08% y para los pacientes de 0-5 años fue de 4,16%. De los 29 pacientes que presentaron apéndice sano, 12 presentaban adenitis mesentérica, una paciente presentaba una rotura folicular y una paciente presentaba una peritonitis de causa médica. En 15 pacientes no se encontraron otras alteraciones.
Conclusiones: El índice de apendicectomías no terapéuticas en nuestro hospital fue del 10,10% en el año 2013. La experiencia internacional y algunos trabajos nacionales demuestran que este resultado es mejorable. Se plantea la utilización de algoritmos clínicos para mejorar la presunción diagnóstica y hacer el mejor uso de los recursos diagnósticos disponibles, así como la instauración de un sistema de registro y análisis prospectivo de los resultados clínicos en apendicitis aguda.Objectives: Acute appendicitis is one of the most frequent pediatric surgical diseases and appendec-tomy is a historically proved treatment. However, attention has been directed at morbidity and costs of negative appendectomy (NA). Here we analyze the incidence of NA at our hospital and its characteris-tics in order to propose a working hypothesis that allows a decrease in its incidence.
Methods: A retrospective analysis including all patients who underwent surgery from 01/01/13 to 31/12/13, with presumptive clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis, in the Pediatric Hospital of the Pereira Rossell Hospital Center, was done. Age, sex, surgical approach, operative findings, pathologic diagnosis and the use and results of laboratory and ultrasound, were analyzed.
Results: In the referred period, appendectomies were performed in 287 patients with diagnosis of acute appendicitis, of which 146 (50.87%) were operated by a conventional approach and 141 (49.13%) by laparoscopic approach. The NA were 10.10%, with similar rates for both approaches (10.27% vs 9.92%, conventionalvslaparoscopic). A higher incidence of of NA was evident in girls, (16,6% vs 5,8% conventional vs laparoscopic).With respect to the age group, the rate of NA was higher among 11-15 years old pa-tients (12,19%), while for those aged between 6-10 years it was 8.08 % and for patients aged 0-5 years it was 4.16%. Of the 29 patients who had a healthy appendix, 12 had mesenteric adenitis, one patient had a follicular rupture and other had a medical peritonitis. In 15 patients no other abnormalities were found.
Conclusions: The NA rate at our Hospital was 10.10% during 2013. The international experience and some national works prove that this result is improvable. We propose the utilization of clinical sco-res in order to improve clinical diagnostic and rational use of ancillary resources and the installation of a prospective registry and analysis system of results in acute appendicitis.Introdução: Oblito é um evento de baixa freqüência, mas que pode gerar uma grave morbidade. Embora alguns fatores de risco tenham sido reconhecidos e desenvolvidos sistemas de detecção com-plementares, continua a ser um grande problema do ponto de vista da saúde e do direito médico legal.Objetivos: Analisar uma casuística do Hospital Maciel, sua apresentação e complicações.
Pacientes e métodos: sete pacientes foram atendidos nos Serviços de Cirurgia Geral e Urologia do Hospital Maciel, no período entre 2013 e 2016. As principais variáveis analisadas são a apresentação e complicações, bem como a presença de fatores risco.Resultados:a descoberta foi de compressas em todos os pacientes. Em 2 casos, o oblito foi assintomático e em 5 casos foi sintomático No segundo, em 2 a apresentação foi temprana e em 3foi tardia. A contagem de materiais estava incorreta em apenas um caso. Nenhum paciente morreu pelas complicações resultantes.
Discussão:o oblito em cirurgia é um problema que continuará a existir enquanto houver pro-cedimentos cirúrgicos, por isso é necessário enfatizar a abordagem sistemática, e também há métodos de diagnóstico que podem ser implementados.
Conclusões: encontramos quase sem exceção a presença de fatores de risco conhecidos em nossa série, embora o número de casos seja pequeno. A incidência também parece ser um pouco maior do que a relatada na literatura
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
