Ressalte-se que Décio Pignatari alcança pela primeira vez essa condição acadêmicaThe dissertation subject is the theory and practice of Décio Pignatari s fictional prose. Decades of work in various fields of communication he has published essays, has taught information theory, has written to the press and was the first intellectual to write in-depth pieces on TV in Brazil, he has translated Marshall McLuhan, has produced advertising pieces, and cinema have made of Pignatari a multimedia creator. This approach also defines his fictional production. Characterized by the usage of multiple resources, both verbal and non-verbal, literary and of various media, Décio Pignatari s narratives represent extensions of his prosética as he calls his thinking on the fictional prose and vice versa. While the pignatarian theoretical platform catering his fiction has been established especially through courses, articles, and essays, his narrative literary production has originated the following works: 1) O rosto da memória [The face of memory], stories; 2) Panteros [Pantheros], novel; 3) Cléris und Lotta [Cléris and Lotta], narrative that integrates the anthology 21 Histórias de Amor [21 Love Stories], which had already appeared, untitled, in the foreword to Cultura pós-nacionalista [Post-Nationalist Culture], collected non-fictional texts; and 4) Céu de lona [Tent sky], a play. To survey Décio Pignatari s fictional prose, the dissertation counts mostly on the very prosética which is based on Charles Sanders Peirce s semiotic. According to Pignatari, fiction, notably the one produced since the release of Ulysses (1922), by James Joyce, is dominated by Peirce s Secondness, which projects itself on Thirdness as a suspended gift, a meeting point of the other tenses, the maximum of genders and of distinct discourses of the media. This is the author s purpose for his fictional prose, a prosética mirror, that also feeds itself, as we intend to demonstrate. This is the first "critical study" of Décio Pignatari s fictional prose and his prosétic

A tag-less method for direct isolation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells by gravitational field-flow fractionation

The analysis of cellular and molecular profiles represents a powerful tool in many biomedical applications to identify the mechanisms underlying the pathological changes. The improvement of cellular starting material and the maintenance of the physiological status in the sample preparation are very useful. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) are a model for prediction of endothelial dysfunction. HUVEC are enzymatically removed from the umbilical vein by collagenase. This method provides obtaining a good sample yield. However, the obtained cells are often contaminated with blood cells and fibroblasts. Methods based on negative selection by in vitro passages or on the use of defined marker are currently employed to isolate target cells. However, these approaches cannot reproduce physiological status and they require expensive instrumentation. Here we proposed a new method for an easy, tag-less and direct isolation of HUVEC from raw umbilical cord sample based on the gravitational field-flow fractionation (GrFFF). This is a low-cost, fully biocompatible method with low instrumental and training investments for flow-assisted cell fractionation. The method allows obtaining pure cells without cell culture procedures as starting material for further analysis; for example, a proper amount of RNA can be extracted. The approach can be easily integrated into clinical and biomedical procedure

Convective–reactive nucleosynthesis of K, Sc, Cl and p-process isotopes in O–C shell mergers

© 2017 The Author(s). Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society. We address the deficiency of odd-Z elements P, Cl, K and Sc in Galactic chemical evolution models through an investigation of the nucleosynthesis of interacting convective O and C shells in massive stars. 3D hydrodynamic simulations of O-shell convection with moderate C-ingestion rates show no dramatic deviation from spherical symmetry. We derive a spherically averaged diffusion coefficient for 1D nucleosynthesis simulations, which show that such convective-reactive ingestion events can be a production site for P, Cl, K and Sc. An entrainment rate of 10-3M⊙s-1features overproduction factors OPs≈ 7. Full O-C shell mergers in our 1D stellar evolution massive star models have overproduction factors OPm> 1 dex but for such cases 3D hydrodynamic simulations suggest deviations from spherical symmetry. γ - process species can be produced with overproduction factors of OPm> 1 dex, for example, for130, 132Ba. Using the uncertain prediction of the 15M⊙, Z = 0.02 massive star model (OPm≈ 15) as representative for merger or entrainment convective-reactive events involving O- and C-burning shells, and assume that such events occur in more than 50 per cent of all stars, our chemical evolution models reproduce the observed Galactic trends of the odd-Z elements

    Biologia e genetica del podocita

Progresses in podocyte biology have been strictly connected with genetic advances; the identification of genes mutated in familial and sporadic forms of nephrotic syndrome has been followed by functional studies of the encoded proteins, revealing numerous properties of the cell. The molecules uncovered so far belong to three main categories: a) proteins located at the slit diaphragm, the intercellular junction which laterally connects podocyte processes and is responsible for selectivity of the glomerular filter, b) molecules involved in regulation of actin dynamics, which are essential for the maintenance of podocyte structure and function, and c) molecules belonging to intracellular organelles, such as mitochondria and lysosomes, which are central players in podocyte metabolism. Considering the key role of the podocyte in health and disease of the glomerular filter, better knowledge of this cell is a pre-requisite for developing targeted therapies of glomerular diseases

Three-dimensional podocyte-endothelial cell co-cultures: Assembly, validation, and application to drug testing and intercellular signaling studies

Proteinuria is a common symptom of glomerular diseases and is due to leakage of proteins from the glomerular filtration barrier, a three-layer structure composed by two post-mitotic highly specialized and interdependent cell populations, i.e. glomerular endothelial cells and podocytes, and the basement membrane in between. Despite enormous progresses made in the last years, pathogenesis of proteinuria remains to be completely uncovered. Studies in the field could largely benefit from an in vitro model of the glomerular filter, but such a system has proved difficult to realize. Here we describe a method to obtain and utilize a three-dimensional podocyte-endothelial co-culture which can be largely adopted by the scientific community because it does not rely on special instruments nor on the synthesis of devoted biomaterials. The device is composed by a porous membrane coated on both sides with type IV collagen. Adhesion of podocytes on the upper side of the membrane has to be preceded by VEGF-induced maturation of endothelial cells on the lower side. The co-culture can be assembled with podocyte cell lines as well as with primary podocytes, extending the use to cells derived from transgenic mice. An albumin permeability assay has been extensively validated and applied as functional readout, enabling rapid drug testing. Additionally, the bottom of the well can be populated with a third cell type, which multiplies the possibilities of analyzing more complex glomerular intercellular signaling events. In conclusion, the ease of assembly and versatility of use are the major advantages of this three-dimensional model of the glomerular filtration barrier over existing methods. The possibility to run a functional test that reliably measures albumin permeability makes the device a valid companion in several research applications ranging from drug screening to intercellular signaling studies

One of the most anthologized and discussed poems by Wallace Stevens, singled out by the author himself as one of his favorites, “The Emperor of Ice-Cream”, first published in 1922 and included in the author’s debut collection – Harmonium, released in the following year – holds an arguably distinctive position within the poet’s presence within Portuguese language. Unlike other major works by the author, this poem has been translated by two of the most distinguished Brazilian poet-translators: Décio Pignatari and Paulo Henriques Britto. After analyzing the original poem and both previous Brazilian translations, a new translational endeavor will be presented, while also identifying its key translation characteristics.

Speculative Brazil: science and Brazilianness in Jerônymo Monteiro\'s fiction

    No full text
This doctoral thesis aims to analyze the books of science fiction written by Jerônymo Monteiro (1908 - 1970), from the aspect of their dialogical relationship with science - Brazilian or international - the fantastic and the Brazilianness. In this sense, his science fiction writings - as well as his texts published in the column \"Panorama\" (1958 - 1970), of the newspaper \"Folha de São Paulo\" - are understood as a synthesis provided by the dialectic between science (mainly in its social aspects) and fantastic, plus Brazilianness. From the reading of the author\'s texts, besides consulting the specific bibliography, three hypotheses were formulated in order to guide the research: 1) Brazilian and international science is present in Jerônymo Monteiro\'s science ficition, sometimes in explicit form; 2) Jerônymo Monteiro, in his science fiction works, was mainly concerned with the social aspect of science, being totally opposed to a S&T detached from any ethical or moral principles; 3) The construction of the fantastic, in the narratives of Jerônymo Monteiro, is not only made through the use of the author\'s imaginative capacity or through dialogue with other fantastic works or science fiction, but rather is linked to the fantastic propagated by the movement called \"fantastic realism\". In addition, as a tool of analysis, the \"black box\" category, thought by Bruno Latour in the book \"Ciência em Ação\" (2000) was used

Pop III i-process nucleosynthesis and the elemental abundances of SMSS J0313-6708 and the most iron-poor stars

© 2017 The Author(s). Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society. We have investigated a highly energetic H-ingestion event during shell He burning leading to H-burning luminosities of log (L H /L ⊙ ) ~ 13 in a 45M⊙ Pop III massive stellar model. In order to track the nucleosynthesis which may occur in such an event, we run a series of single-zone nucleosynthesis models for typical conditions found in the stellar evolution model. Such nucleosynthesis conditions may lead to i-process neutron densities of up to ~10 13 cm -3 . The resulting simulation abundance pattern, where Mg comes from He burning and Ca from the i process, agrees with the general observed pattern of the most iron-poor star currently known, SMSS J031300.36-670839.3. However, Na is also efficiently produced in these i-process conditions, and the prediction exceeds observations by ~2.5 dex. While this probably rules out this model for SMSS J031300.36-670839.3, the typical i-process signature of combined He burning and i process of higher than solar [Na/Mg] , [Mg/Al], and low [Ca/Mg] is reproducing abundance features of the two next most iron-poor stars HE 1017-5240 and HE 1327-2326 very well. The i process does not reach Fe which would have to come from a low level of additional enrichment. i process in hyper-metal-poor or Pop III massive stars may be able to explain certain abundance patterns observed in some of the most metal-poor CEMP-no stars

    No full text
The aim of the present paper is to draw attention on the poet, philosopher and literary critic Carlo Belloli and on his artistic experience. With the two collections of poems published in the early ‘40s, Parole per la guerra and Testi-poemi murali, Belloli anticipated by almost ten years the poetic experiments of both Swiss author Gomringer, as well as Brazilians De Campos and Pignatari’s. The historiographic position, according to which the three main lines of new concrete poetic avant -garde experimentation, namely those originating in Brazil, Switzerland, and Italy, have had independent origins in each area, must be reconsidered, and, at the same time, the propulsive and inspiring role of Carlo Belloli’s work should be revaluated.
