Review of Chiara Mazzucchelli, The Heart and the Island: A Critical Study of Sicilian American Literature
Sicily’s island status and centuries of conquests and foreign rule have molded the identity of Sicilian people and culture in unique ways. Reflecting this diver-sity, Sicilian literature has long occupied a distinct place within Italian litera-ture. Likewise, in The Heart and the Island, scholar Chiara Mazzucchelli argues that Sicilian American writers have produced a substantial body of literature that, although traditionally subsumed under the broader domain of Italian American literature, manifests “a distinct Sicilian Americanness” that she terms “sicilianamericanita.” Following on the footsteps of scholars like Edvige Giunta and Donna Gabaccia, Mazzucchelli presents an ambitious “intraethnic decen-tering project” that by embracing diversity and regional analysis aims to move beyond homogenous constructions of Italian American identity (often centered on Southern Italians’ marginality) and toward a wider exploration of the ties between Italian and Italian American literature

Zero Energy Buildings: a proposal of a simplified tool for the ZEB status assessment
The European and national standards concerning energy saving strategies are nowadays paying greater and greater attention to the building construction area in order to achieve the ‘Zero Energy Building’ (ZEB) goal. Nevertheless, the available assessment methods are often used as tools to verify and assess the building energy behaviour when the design is already completed, rather than as tools for a preliminary assessment and choice of different design technologies and solutions. Not least, these tools can be not intuitive and suitable for many designers, especially for those working in the field of minor residential constructions, where they have not been used until a few years ago.
To solve this gap, after analysing some of the available assessment methods, a simple and intuitive spreadsheet, named ZEBAPD, able to give a first preliminary assessment of the ZEB status, has been developed. The paper describes the structure of the tool: starting from fixing the system boundary conditions, it evaluates the building envelope thermal behaviour, the building services solutions and renewable energy systems. The tool produces as an output the building ZEB status evaluation. This simple spreadsheet can be used to evaluate the effect and the incidence of different technical solutions or building services systems on the building primary energy consumption, giving the designers a quick and intuitive tool to assess the quality and the effectiveness of their design choices for the ZEB goal achievement. Moreover, it shows immediately where are the weaknesses
of the analysed building and it allows to clearly identify the possible intervention strategies to improve it, whether regarding building envelope, building services, or both
What remains of Yugoslavia? From the geopolitical space of Yugoslavia to the virtual space of the Web Yugosphere
The article works from the double hypothesis that: (1) a Yugoslav socio-cultural space still exists in spite of the dissolution of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia; (2) the communities ‘occupying’ this space can be considered, in some measure, ‘diasporic’, if the ‘Yugoslav diaspora’ is defined by not only the geographic displacement of people but also by the loosening of the connections between the members of an ex-nation who still consider themselves a national community. The ‘space’ mapped in the essay is the so-called ‘virtual space’ of the Web, including all websites that reconnect to the ‘cultural languages’ of the ‘past-country’. The author observes how these ‘different Yugoslavias’ are ‘staged’ and linked together on the Web, and verifies how some far-flung communities rally around the ‘virtual re-foundation’ and ‘virtual representations’ of Yugoslavia. The corpus is constituted mainly of ‘yugonostalgic’ websites that are subjected to a content analysis. The 191 websites of the corpus and the hyper-textual map of their edges are analysed using semantic features together with other tools of categorization

This study explores the transformation of marriage in the face of individualization processes and examines the meanings and forms it has assumed in post-modernity. To this end, exploratory qualitative research was conducted on the similarities and differences in practices and meanings associated with the marriage rite, comparing three generations. The study was conducted in Italy on a sample of 48 couples belonging to three cohorts (under 35, 50-60 years, and over 70). The generational differences reflect a continuous evolution of marriage values and practices, confirming that, although the meanings and modalities of marriage change, it remains a crucial event in Italian social life
