(Re)thinking gender in cyber-violence. Insights from awareness-raising campaigns on online violence against women and girls in Italy
Get PDFOnline violence against women and girls, known as cyber-VAWG, is a phe-nomenon that exacerbates dynamics of discrimination, marginalization, and exclusion of women from society. This is recognized as a form of violence with profound social, cultural, and economic consequences (EIGE, 2017; EU Parliament, 2021; Goulds et al., 2020). Rather than being an isolated phenomenon, cyber-violence is part of the con-tinuum of violence, emphasizing how its various manifestations stem from a common cultural root and are inherently connected to each other. This study, by analyzing vari-ous Italian awareness campaigns focused on cyber-violence against women and girls, highlights the essentiality of a media-educational approach that integrates a gender perspective into the creation of media literacy pathways specifically aimed at digital environments. This integration proves fundamental in promoting media-educational strategies that do not just focus on developing skills but also consider the social and cultural context in which digital practices take shape (Cho, 2022; Taddeo & Tirocchi, 2014; Tirocchi, 2013)
WOMEN IN THE LOCKDOWN IN EUROPE. MEDIA REPRESENTATIONS OF GENDER DIFFERENCES IN “PHASE 1” OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
Get PDFHow have women been portrayed during the initial phase of the coronavirus pandemic? What issues were discussed across European newspapers when women were at the center of the narrative during the lockdown? This paper aims to provide some initial answers to these questions by looking at a bulk of 462 articles collected across 5 different European countries during the so-called “phase 1” of the COVID-19 pandemic when strict stay-at-home policies were imposed to contain the spread of the virus. Results show that four frames were mostly used by the media: women as a vulnerable group, women as actors in the pandemic, women’s health, and women as a transformative force in society. Implications of these findings will be discussed and the emergence of a “women’s narrative” in the coronavirus crisis will be proposed

No full textIn anni recenti l’emigrazione italiana verso l’estero ha ricominciato a far parlare di sé destando crescente preoccupazione nell’opinione pubblica. Ciò nonostante, sono ancora poche le ricerche che si occupano di studiare in maniera approfondita l’esperienza di chi ha ripreso a lasciare il nostro paese e ancor meno sono quelle che hanno scelto di farlo a partire da un approccio di genere. Se viene oramai dato per scontato che a emigrare da paesi ad alto reddito siano in egual misura uomini e donne, la possibilità che l’esperienza di questo gruppo di migranti possa presentare delle specificità riconducibili alla dimensione di genere rimane finora ancora largamente trascurata. Eppure, incentrare il focus dell’analisi sulla migrazione femminile risulta particolarmente utile perché permette, attraverso un gioco di specchi che interroga sia la società d’origine sia quella di approdo, di mettere in luce aspetti dell’esperienza migratoria che altrimenti rischierebbero di passare inosservati. Esaminando le storie di vita di dieci donne emiliano-romagnole che hanno deciso di lasciare la loro terra per trasferirsi in Canada, il volume propone una riflessione su cosa voglia dire andarsene dall’Italia al giorno d’oggi a partire da una rilettura di genere e affrontando in particolare temi legati al riconoscimento, all’agency e agli stili di vita

As a knowledge democracy project, Imaginations is free to submit to and free to read. Founded at the University of Alberta in 2010, the journal is funded by the federal granting agency of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
Imaginations showcases artistic work and scholarly research. It focuses on innovative artistic practices and interdisciplinary, intercultural theoretical understandings of images, screens and visual culture. The journal provides an online installation venue for original artwork and publishes academic articles in original languages and translated into French or English.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textL’opera prende in esame la pratica di quel tipo particolare di viaggio, il voluntourism (qui tradotto con“turismo di volontariato”) che porta individui che vivono nel Nord del mondo a viaggiare per conoscere persone e realtà sociali del Sud, nell’ottica di incontro con l’altro e di aiuto solidale.
La prospettiva nella quale si pone il lavoro di ricerca è di indagare se e come questa pratica di volontariato - che si fa per il tramite di un viaggio verso destinazioni dense di immagini pre-istituite, di aspettative ideali e emozionali- influisca nella de-costruzione delle rappresentazioni dell’altro, riferendosi a quell’alterità incarnata nella figura del migrante globale proveniente da una tra quelle regioni del mondo che per un breve spazio di tempo questi viaggiatori della tarda modernità desiderano abitare. Il proposito è di cercare di comprendere se queste forme “alternative” di turismo riescano a produrre anche un “discorso alternativo sull’altrità” in grado di contrastare oggettivazioni sminuenti, e per contro di sostenere un riconoscimento sostanziale dell’alterità in grado di produrre una messa in discussione dello status quo. Una prospettiva presentata e discussa nei capitoli iniziali che offrono una a ricognizione teorica rispetto studi internazionali che si sono dedicati alla de-costruzione e allo svelamento del significato del viaggiare. Nei capitoli successivi, invece, vengono presentate delle riflessioni a partire da un percorso di ricerca microsociologico, caratterizzato dall’adozione di una prospettiva di analisi di impronta socio-costruttivista e interpretativa impiegata per rileggere i percorsi individuali di un gruppo di turisti volontari. Un campo denso di vecchi e nuovi ideologismi, di ambivalenze e allo stesso tempo di potenzialità trasformative che possono generarsi proprio, forse solo, se nell’esperire accade sia la sperimentazione di sé nell’alterità che l’incontro “sconvolgente” tra soggettività e alterità. Una indagine microsociale che guarda continuamente all’aspetto macro che contiene le pratiche individuali ma che contemporaneamente ne può essere (potenzialmente) ridefinito. Quali precondizioni e caratteristiche dell’esperienza di viaggio sono influenti in questa prospettiva? Quali vincoli, emozioni e rappresentazioni giocano nella conferma o nella trasformazione delle rappresentazioni sociali del sud del mondo, dell’alterità, della vita nella società occidentale della de-crescita
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
