Aeroelastic analysis of an adaptive trailing edge with a smart elastic skin

    No full text
Nowadays, the design choices of the new generation aircraft are moving towards the research and development of innovative technologies, aimed at improving performance as well as to minimize the environmental impact. In the current “greening” context, the morphing structures represent a very attractive answer to such requirements: both aerodynamic and structural advantages are ensured in several flight conditions, safeguarding the fuel consumption at the same time. An aeronautical intelligent system is therefore the outcome of combining complex smart materials and structures, assuring the best functionality level in the flight envelope. The Adaptive Trailing Edge Device (ATED) is a sub-project inside SARISTU (Smart Intelligent Aircraft Structures), an L2 level project of the 7th EU Framework programme coordinated by Airbus, aimed at developing technologies for realizing a morphing wing extremity addressed to improve the general aircraft performance and to reduce the fuel burning up to 5%. This specific study, divided into design, manufacturing and testing phases, involved universities, research centers and leading industries of the European consortium. The paper deals with the aeroelastic impact assessment of a full-scale morphing wing trailing edge on a Large Aeroplanes category aircraft. The FE (Finite Element) model of the technology demonstrator, located in the aileron region and manufactured within the project, was referenced to for the extrapolation of the structural properties of the whole adaptive trailing edge device placed in its actual location in the outer wing. The input FE models were processed within MSC-Nastran® environment to estimate stiffness and inertial distributions suitable to construct the aeroelastic stick-beam mock-up of the reference structure. Afterwards, a flutter analysis in simulated operative condition, have been carried out by means of Sandy®, an in-house code, according to meet the safety requirements imposed by the applicable aviation regulations (paragraph 25.629, parts (a) and (b)-(1))

    No full text
At the Department of Mechanical, Chemical and Materials Engineering of the University of Cagliari an experimental and numerical research project has begun with the aim of developing highly efficient thermal energy storage (TES) systems using phase change materials (PCM) of particular interest in concentrating solar power (CSP) applications. The present work aims to simulate the melting and solidification processes in containing boxes and heat transfer devices of different geometrical features which may constitute the elementary cell of a more complex TES system. Two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical models, developed with COMSOL Multiphysics are considered and used to simulate TES, heat conduction and natural convection. The models are used to determine the temperature profile inside the PCM to identify which configurations are capable of enhancing thermal response between a solid wall and a PCM. The results obtained will be used for comparison with experimental data acquired from a pilot plant under construction in the DIMCM laboratories. At the current stage the laboratory is being brought to completion

Environmental performances of different configurations of a material recovery facility in a life cycle perspective

    No full text
The study evaluated the environmental performances of an integrated material recovery facility (MRF) able to treat 32 kt/y of unsorted mixed waste, made of residuals from household source separation and separate collection. The facility includes a mechanical sorting platform for the production of a solid recovered fuel (SRF) utilized in an external waste-to-energy plant, bio-cells for tunnel composting of organic fraction, and a sanitary landfill for the safe disposal of ultimate waste. All the MRF sub-units have been analysed in depth in order to acquire reliable data for a life cycle assessment study, focused on the environmental performances of different configurations of the facility. The study investigated a “past” configuration, including just mechanical sorting, landfilling and biogas combustion in a gas engine, and the “present” one, which includes also a composting unit. Two possible “future” configurations, having a gasifier inside the MRF battery limits, have been also analysed, assessing the performances of two fluidized bed reactors of different size, able to gasify only the residues generated by the sorting platform or the whole amount of produced SRF, respectively. The analysis evaluated the contributions of each unit in the different configurations and allowed a reliable assessment of the technological evolution of the facility. The results quantified the positive effect of the inclusion of an aerobic treatment of the waste organic fraction. The SRF gasification in situ appears to improve the MRF environmental performances in all the impact categories, with the exclusion of that of global warming

Beyond the Direct Activation of Cannabinoid Receptors: New Strategies to Modulate the Endocannabinoid System in CNS-Related Diseases

    No full text
Background: Anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG) are signalling lipids which belong to the class of endocannabinoids (ECs) and exert their actions by activating cannabinoid receptor type-1 (CB1) and type-2 (CB2). These receptors are involved in many physiological and pathological processes in the central nervous system (CNS) and in peripheral organs. Despite many potent and selective ligands for cannabinoid receptors have been generated over the last two decades, this class of compounds achieved only a very limited therapeutic success, mainly because of the CB1- mediated side effects. Methods: The compounds and results presented in this review article have been gathered from an extensive research in public databases for patents, clinical trials and scientific literature. Reference to patent numbers, clinical trial registry numbers, websites and scientific articles is provided in the text and/or in the reference section. Results: Over the last 10-15 years, many inhibitors for the main EC hydrolytic enzymes fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL), α,β-hydrolase domain-6 (ABHD6) and -12 (ABHD12) have been synthesized and characterized in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, other targets have been explored for the modulation of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Among them, several novel inhibitors for COX-2, diacylglycerol lipases and the putative endocannabinoid membrane transporter have been described in the literature. Polypharmacological approaches which combine mild or reversible inhibition of at least two of these targets are also under investigation. Conclusions: The ECS offers several therapeutic opportunities beyond the direct activation of cannabinoid receptors. The modulation of EC levels in vivo represents an interesting therapeutic perspective for several CNS-related diseases. Based on the literature and patent literature this review provides an overview of the different classes of inhibitors for FAAH, MAGL, ABHDs and COX-2 used as tool compounds and for clinical development with a special focus on CNS-related diseases

Changes in Morpho-Anatomical and Eco-Physiological Responses of <i>Viburnum tinus</i> L. var <i>lucidum</i> as Modulated by Sodium Chloride and Calcium Chloride Salinization

    No full text
Salinity in water and soil is among the major constraints to the cultivation of ornamental crops since it can affect their growth and aesthetic value. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to assess whether the application of two different salts (80 mM NaCl or 53.3 mM CaCl2, with a final ionic concentration of 160 mM) could differently modulate the anatomical and physiological acclimation of an important ornamental species such as Viburnum tinus L. var. lucidum. Eco-physiological analyses (e.g., leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence emission) were performed and leaves were subjected to light microscopy analysis to quantify functional anatomical traits through digital image analysis. Results showed that the two iso-osmotic solutions induced different structure-mediated physiological alterations in V. tinus plants. Photosynthesis was lowered by CaCl2 treatments (−58%) more than by NaCl (−37%), also due to the occurrence of photodamage apart from stomatal limitations. Neither Na+ nor Cl− exhibited toxic effects in leaf lamina structure which was reflected in the limited reduction in dry matter accumulation. Overall data were interpreted focusing on the coordination among leaf structural and functional traits suggesting that the fine control of functional anatomical traits contributes to physiological acclimation to both stressful conditions

Synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of new biphenylic derivatives as CB2 receptor ligands

    No full text
Targeting type-2 cannabinoid receptor (CB2) is considered a feasible strategy to develop new drugs for the treatment of diseases like neuropathic pain, chronic inflammation, neurodegenerative disorders and cancer. Such drugs are devoid of the undesired central side effects that are typically mediated by the CB1 receptor. In this work we synthesized 18 biphenylic carboxamides as new CB2-selective ligands and evaluated their pharmacological profiles. The functional activity of these compounds is strongly influenced by the nature of the substituent at position 4' and 5 of the biphenyl scaffold. Position 5 seems to be responsible for the agonist or inverse agonist behaviour independently of the substituent in position 4', with the exception of the methoxyl group which transforms both full agonists and inverse agonists into neutral antagonists. This study provides a novel complete toolbox of CB2 functional modulators that derive from the same chemical scaffold. Such probes may be useful to investigate the biological role of CB2 receptors in cellular assays

Temperature- and chemical-induced neurotoxicity in zebrafish

    No full text
Throughout their lives, humans encounter a plethora of substances capable of inducing neurotoxic effects, including drugs, heavy metals and pesticides. Neurotoxicity manifests when exposure to these chemicals disrupts the normal functioning of the nervous system, and some neurotoxic agents have been linked to neurodegenerative pathologies such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. The growing concern surrounding the neurotoxic impacts of both naturally occurring and man-made toxic substances necessitates the identification of animal models for rapid testing across a wide spectrum of substances and concentrations, and the utilization of tools capable of detecting nervous system alterations spanning from the molecular level up to the behavioural one. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is gaining prominence in the field of neuroscience due to its versatility. The possibility of analysing all developmental stages (embryo, larva and adult), applying the most common "omics" approaches (transcriptomics, proteomics, lipidomics, etc.) and conducting a wide range of behavioural tests makes zebrafish an excellent model for neurotoxicity studies. This review delves into the main experimental approaches adopted and the main markers analysed in neurotoxicity studies in zebrafish, showing that neurotoxic phenomena can be triggered not only by exposure to chemical substances but also by fluctuations in temperature. The findings presented here serve as a valuable resource for the study of neurotoxicity in zebrafish and define new scenarios in ecotoxicology suggesting that alterations in temperature can synergistically compound the neurotoxic effects of chemical substances, intensifying their detrimental impact on fish populations
