Quality and quantity of bone following alveolar distraction osteogenesis in the human mandible
PURPOSE: The purpose of this prospective study on humans were to evaluate (a) the clinical outcome of alveolar distraction osteogenesis for the correction of vertically deficient edentulous mandibular ridges, (b) the clinical outcome of dental implants placed in the distracted areas, and (c) the quality and quantity of the bone that had formed in the distraction gap. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seven patients presenting vertically deficient edentulous ridges were treated by means of distraction osteogenesis with an intraoral alveolar distractor. Approximately 3 months after consolidation of the distracted segments, 20 ITI solid screw SLA implants were placed in the distracted areas. Three to 4 months later, abutments were connected and prosthetic loading of the implants started. During implant site preparation, bone biopsies were taken at the implant sites with trephine burrs for histologic and histometric analyses. RESULTS: The mean follow-up after the initial prosthetic loading was 18 months (range 12-24 months). The mean bone gain obtained at the end of distraction was 7 mm (range 5-9 mm). The cumulative success rate of implants 2 years after the onset of prosthetic loading was 95%, whereas the survival rate of implants was 100%. The newly formed bone consisted of woven bone reinforced by parallel-fibered bone with bone marrow spaces between the bone trabeculae. The bone area fraction in the distraction region ranged from 21.6% to 57.8% (38.5+/-11.7%). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Results from this study showed that (a) distraction osteogenesis is a reliable technique for the correction of vertically deficient edentulous ridges, (b) the regenerated bone withstood the functional demands of implant loading, (c) survival and success rates of implants placed in the distracted areas were consistent with those of implants placed in native bone, and (d) there is sufficient bone volume and maturity in the distracted region for primary stability of the implant
An easy access to retrieve dental implants displaced into the maxillary sinus : the bony window technique
Aim of the study: To present the authors' experience concerning the removal of dental implants displaced in the maxillary sinus via an intraoral approach consisting of the creation of a bony window pedicled to the maxillary sinus membrane. Materials and methods: Thirty-six systemically healthy patients, presenting with oral implants displaced into the maxillary sinus, but with no signs of acute or chronic sinusitis, were consecutively treated between 2002 and 2012 via an intraoral approach with the bony window technique. Results: Removal of oral implants from the maxillary sinus was achieved in all patients, and postoperative recovery was uneventful in all of them. Computed tomographies performed after surgery showed no signs of residual sinus infection in all patients and a complete ossification of the bony window margins. Twelve of the 36 treated patients were treated with a sinus grafting procedure 12-18 months after in the same areas previously treated with the bone lid technique. Seventeen implants were placed in the grafted areas 6-9 months later and, after a further waiting period needed for osseointegration, the treated patients were rehabilitated with implant-supported prostheses. The survival rate of implants was 100%, and no complications related to the sinuses and implants were recorded. Conclusion: Results from this study seem to demonstrate that the bony window technique is a safe and easy way to remove oral implants from the maxillary sinus under local anesthesia. The surgical access is hardly visible 6-12 months after surgery, and maxillary sinuses appeared free from residual pathology in all treated patients. Finally, this procedure allows a second-stage sinus grafting procedure via a lateral approach as in a previously untreated maxillary sinus, thus allowing an implant-supported prosthetic restoration
The author analyzes the labour consequences of the succession between entrepreneurs, starting from a recognition of the various types of outsourcing with the related needs and main critical issues.
The survey focuses primarily on the transfer of businesses, examining European legislation and case-law and then moving on to internal legislation, trade union procedures and a specific focus on the transfer of companies in crisis.
The author then dwells on the contract, taking into account in particular the indications of authenticity, the criteria of distinction from the illicit administration of labour and the protection of workers in the event of turnover between companies.
Finally, the research deepens the "social clauses", both first and second generation, assessing their compatibility with European law and with the constitution and reflecting on possible remedies in case of their violation
Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles: New Parameters for Automotive Design
As the influence of vehicle emissions on our environment has become better understood, the UK government has recently placed urgent emphasis on the implementation of low carbon
technologies in the automotive industry through: the UK Low Carbon Industrial Strategy. The overall objective is to offer big incentives to consumers and support for the development of infrastructure and engineering solutions. This scheme however does not consider how the development of functional and experiential user value might drive consumer demand, contributing to the adoption of low carbon vehicles (LCVs) in the mass market.
With the emergence of the North East of England as the UK’s first specialised region for the development of ultra-low carbon vehicles (ULCVs), ONE North East, as a development agency for the region's economic and business development, and Northumbria University Ideas-lab have supported a project to facilitate innovation through the collaboration of technology, research and development (R&D) and business. The High Value Low Carbon (HVLC) project aims to envisage
new user value made possible by the integration of low carbon vehicle platforms with new process and network technologies. The HVLC consortium represents vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers as well as technology based companies and through an ongoing process of design concept generation the project offers a hub for innovation led enterprise.
Whilst new technological developments in areas such as power generation, nano materials, hydrogen fuel cells, printed electronics and networked communications will all impact on future automotive design, the mass adoption of low carbon technologies represents a paradigm shift for the motorist. This paper aims to describe how the mapping of new parameters will lead to new transport scenarios that will create the space for new collaborative research on user experiences supported by innovative technologies and related services
Maxillary sinus grafting with Bio-Oss or Straumann Bone Ceramic: histomorphometric results from a randomized controlled multicenter clinical trial
INTRODUCTION: This investigation was designed to compare the histomorphometric results from sinus floor augmentation with anorganic bovine bone (ABB) and a new biphasic calcium phosphate, Straumann Bone Ceramic (BCP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight maxillary sinuses were treated in 37 patients. Residual bone width was > or =6 mm and height was > or =3 mm and <8 mm. Lateral sinus augmentation was used, with grafting using either ABB (control group; 23 sinuses) or BCP (test group; 25 sinuses); sites were randomly assigned to the control or test groups. After 180-240 days of healing, implant sites were created and biopsies taken for histological and histomorphometric analyses. The parameters assessed were (1) area fraction of new bone, soft tissue, and graft substitute material in the grafted region; (2) area fraction of bone and soft tissue components in the residual alveolar ridge compartment; and (3) the percentage of surface contact between the graft substitute material and new bone. RESULTS: Measurable biopsies were available from 56% of the test and 81.8% of the control sites. Histology showed close contact between new bone and graft particles for both groups, with no significant differences in the amount of mineralized bone (21.6+/-10.0% for BCP vs. 19.8+/-7.9% for ABB; P=0.53) in the biopsy treatment compartment of test and control site. The bone-to-graft contact was found to be significantly greater for ABB (48.2+/-12.9% vs. 34.0+/-14.0% for BCP). Significantly less remaining percentage of graft substitute material was found in the BCP group (26.6+/-5.2% vs. 37.7+/-8.5% for ABB; P=0.001), with more soft tissue components (46.4+/-7.7% vs. 40.4+/-7.3% for ABB; P=0.07). However, the amount of soft tissue components for both groups was found not to be greater than in the residual alveolar ridge. DISCUSSION: Both ABB and BCP produced similar amounts of newly formed bone, with similar histologic appearance, indicating that both materials are suitable for sinus augmentation for the placement of dental implants. The potential clinical relevance of more soft tissue components and different resorption characteristics of BCP requires further investigation

Uno sguardo all'Est.
The contribution of the author starts by examining fundamental labour rights recognised by the Constitutions of the Countries of the Community of Independent States. Then the author focuses upon Russian Labour Law, going through the history of the main branches of the discipline: the individual relationship, industrial relations, the labour market. The article finds a surprising continuity in the essential lines of Russian Labour Law, in spite of the completely different socio-economic systems that were experimented in Russia during the twentieth century. The author concludes that Russian Labour Law clearly belongs to the European matrix of the discipline
