    A Study of the Chiao-fang-chi

    Get PDF
The Chiao-fang-chi, an account of the pleasure houses of Ch'ang-an by a T'ang official named Ts'ui Ling-ch'in 崔令欽, contains the names of 324 songs sung by the courtesans of Ch'ang-an, and thus represents the most complete record we have of T'ang period musical compositions. From various sources we may discover something of the career of Ts'ui Ling-ch'in. It is almost certain, for example, that he was a police official in Ch'ang-an during the k'ai-yüan period (713-741), and therefore we may assume that his work, the Chiaofang-chi, possesses a high degree of reliability. Up until now, the piece entitled Hsieh-ch'iu-niang 謝秋娘 by Li Teyü 李德裕 (787-849) has been regarded as the source of the later composition Wang-chiang-nan 望江南, but from evidence in the Chiao-fang-chi it would appear that the two are actually the same piece of music. The tune entitled P'u-sa-man 菩薩蠻 has been considered a work of the late T'ang, and therefore the words to the tune traditionally attributed to the poet Li Po (701-762) have been regarded as spurious. The fact that a tune entitled P'u-sa-man appears in the Chiao-fang-chi indicates, however, that the traditional attribution cannot for this reason be so lightly dismissed. This has led some scholars to assert that the words are a genuine work of Li Po, though the author considers that, in view of their content and style, this is hardly possible

Abstract Background Relatively little empirical attention has focused on the association between social participation and depressive symptoms amongst older adults in Asian nations, where persons over the age of 65 represent a rapidly growing segment of the population. This study explores the dynamic relationship between participation in social activities and trajectories of depressive symptomatology among older Taiwanese adults surveyed over 18 years. Methods Data are from a nationally representative sample of 1,388 adults aged 60-64 first surveyed in 1989 and followed over an 18-year time period for a total of six waves. Individual involvement in social activities was categorized into continuous participation, ceased participation before age 70, initiating participation in older adulthood, never participated, and dropped out before age 70. Two domains of depressive symptoms--negative affect and lack of positive affect--were measured using a 10-item version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale. Results Analyses using growth curve modeling showed that continuously participating or initiating participation in social activities later life is significantly associated with fewer depressive symptoms among older Taiwanese adults, even after controlling for the confounding effects of aging, individual demographic differences, and health status. Conclusions These findings suggest that maintaining or initiating social participation in later life benefits the mental health of older adults. Facilitating social activities among older adults is a promising direction for programs intended to promote mental health and successful aging among older adults in Taiwan.</p

[[abstract]]The purpose of this empirical study is to investigate the association between corporate governance and the individual sensitivity to market sentiment. The main argument is to examine whether individual sentiment sensitivity is affected by the change of external corporate governance mechanism. The empirical evidence shows that the individual sentiment beta is inversely associated with G index. The evidence from Newey-West standard errors estimation provides the same support for the robustness. It implies that when the antitakeover provisions are less taken by a firm, it signals openness to the market and attracts the merger arbitraging institutions to provide more informative trading. The noisy trading behaviors are also active correspondingly
