    Going Green

    No full text
In future an increasingly larger share of electricity will come from renewable sources (off-shore windmills, solar plants, etc.), while consumption of electricity also increases (incl. electric vehicles). The consequence of these developments is that more electricity is moved over the power networks. Electrical networks will become smart grids with more superconducting components replacing conventional counterparts. Recently the High Voltage research group and the High Voltage Laboratory of TU Delft are involved in a pilot project for a 6 km long high voltage HTS power cable in the Netherlands.Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

    No full text
Cryostat for a high-temperature superconducting power cable, comprising concentric tubes, an annular region between said tubes, wherein a multilayer thermal insulation and getter material for supporting high vacuum conditions are provided in said annular region, and wherein the multilayer insulation comprises reflective layers separated by fibrous spacer material, wherein the fibrous spacer material comprises activated carbon micro-fibers and/or activated carbon nano-fibers. Beneficially the getter material is at least in part embodied in the activated carbon fibers of the fibrous spacer material.Electrical Sustainable EnergyElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

New materials in high voltage technology

    No full text
Assets in high voltage technology have to meet harsh service conditions over long lifetimes of 40 years or more. Due to environmental concerns, substitution of conventional insulating materials becomes a necessity. Because robustness and sustainability are serious requirements, only few new materials are really breaking through. At present some promising material technologies emerge with great potential applicability in high voltage engineering. This paper discusses especially nanocomposites and high temperature superconductors.Electrical Sustainable EnergyElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

On the application of High-Tc superconductors in power coils and transformers

    No full text
In this study, the electro-magnetic properties of high-Tc tapes and coils are investigated. The focus is on Bi-2223/Ag tapes with non-twisted superconducting filaments as these are the only high-Tc superconductors at present available in sufficient length for practical applications. The study is confined to high-temperature superconductors and power coils operated in liquid nitrogen and intended for large-scale applications. The aim of the study is three-fold: to explore the options and the potential of increasing the critical currents and reducing the alternating current losses of practical superconductors in power coils hence aiming at improved performance; to build a model that is sufficient to describe behaviour and to calculate voltage-current characteristics of advanced Bi-2223 superconductors and coils carrying alternating current and exposed to alternating magnetic field; the application target is to develop fundamentals of high-Tc superconducting power coils and as an example to make and to study a prototype 1-MVA resonator coil both experimentally and numerically and hence to demonstrate the feasibility and predictable behaviour of high-Tc superconducting power devices. The final objective is, using the knowledge and the experience gained in the study, to evaluate the viability of a power transformer with high-Tc superconducting coils

Implementation of O.A. Igelstrom’s Reforms in the Steppe of Orenburg Region

    No full text
The article describes the process of implementing the reforms by O.A. Igelstrom in the Small Kazakh Horde. The author briefly acquaints with the main content of reforms of governance of the Orenburg part of the Kazakh steppe in the 1870. The main motives and the purposes of regional administration in carrying out administration reforms in the region and the necessity to take local traditions of the organization of the power into consideration are reflected. The reasons of O.A. Igelstrom’s reforms failure are revealed and discussed. The author studies the issue related to the authority and the influence of the khan’s power among the Kazakhs and the government measures on the restriction of this power. Attempts of the imperial government to manipulate with elections of new khans are described in the article. Reaction of the Kazakh elite on those actions is shown. The special attention is paid to the movement of Syrym Datov and to the way the Russian government took the advantage of this movement under various political circumstances. Winning round the Kazakh opposition and pushing it away under the changed circumstances, the Russian administration steadily solved one of the main political tasks to replace the elected head by a person or an institution loyal to the emperor and suitable for carrying out the requirements of the Russian regional administration. But it was impossible to solve the problem in the conditions of O. Igelstrom’s reforms. The way to achieve the desired goal was opened with M. Speransky’s reforms of 1820

Bipolar Pulse-Drive Electronics for a Josephson Arbitrary Waveform Synthesizer

    No full text
AJosephson arbitrary waveform synthesizer (JAWS) has been developed in order to generate quantum-based ac voltage signals. The key component of this JAWS is a modified commercial 30-Gb/s pattern generator that can generate ternary patterns (containing the values +1, 0, and ?1, resulting in bipolar pulses). The new pulse-drive electronics have been successfully tested by driving Josephson arrays with bipolar current pulses from 1 to 30 Gb/s in order to study their current–voltage characteristics and the spectra of the JAWS signals.Electrical Sustainable EnergyElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Some Aspects of the Consequences of State Management on «Olympic Airways»

    No full text
«Olympic Airways» (O.A.) was founded by Onassis in 1956. The Greek State took over O.A. in 1975. The operation of O.A. was and still is based on the Contract that had been agreed between Onassis and the Greek State. The author proves that, although the State fulfilled the terms of the Contract completely while the company was privately owned, it stopped complying with many terms of the Contract since 1975, when O.A. became state owned. Furthermore, the State obliged O.A. to undertake the cost of some of its policies. The author estimates that, as a result of this conduct of the State, the total burden and loss of income of O.A. amounts to 1.231billion,whichexceedsby 1.231 billion, which exceeds by 544 millions the O.A. losses for whole period of state ownershi
