Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Les biphosphonates pour le traitement du syndrome douloureux régional complexe de type 1 ou algoneurodystrophie : méta-analyse des essais randomisés contre placebo
Get PDFObjectives. Complex regional pain syndrome type 1 (CRPS-1) is a severely disabling pain syndrome with no definite treatment established. Many studies have shown that bisphosphonates can reduce pain and improve function in patients with CRPS 1. We have performed a systematic literature review and meta analysis of all randomized controlled trials to assess the benefit of bisphosphonates on pain and function in patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Methods. A systematic literature search was performed in the Medline, Embase and Cochrane databases. Two authors selected independently blinded randomized trials comparing bisphosphonates to placebo on short-term pain (J30 to J40) and medium term (M2-M3), tolerance and function in patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Results. 258 articles were identified. Five trials of moderate to good quality met our inclusion criteria. VAS short-term pain was statistically significantly lower in the bisphosphonate group versus the placebo group (-2.6, 95% CI [-1.8, -3.4] p <0.00001), as well as the VAS medium term (-2.5, 95% CI [-1.4, -3.6] p <0.00001). There were more adverse events in the bisphosphonate group (35.5%) than in the placebo group (16.4%) OR = 2.95, 95% CI [1.38, 6.29]. Conclusion. Our results suggest that bisphosphonates reduce pain and improve function in patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Other studies are needed to determine their effectiveness.Objectifs. Le syndrome douloureux régional complexe de type 1 (SDRC-1) est un syndrome douloureux gravement invalidant sans traitement définitif établi. De nombreuses études ont montré que les biphosphonates peuvent réduire la douleur et améliorer la fonction chez les patients avec SDRC 1. Nous avons effectué une revue systématique de la littérature et une méta analyse de tous les essais contrôlés randomisés pour évaluer le bénéfice des biphosphonates sur la douleur et la fonction chez les patients atteints d’algoneurodystrophie. Méthodes. Une recherche systématique de la littérature a été effectuée dans les bases de données Medline, Embase et Cochrane. Deux auteurs ont sélectionné indépendamment les essais randomisés en aveugle comparant les biphosphonates au placebo sur la douleur à court terme (J30 à J40) et à moyen terme (M2-M3), la tolérance ainsi que la fonction chez les patients atteints de SDRC 1. Résultats. 258 articles ont été identifiés. Cinq essais de moyenne à bonne qualité méthodologique répondaient à nos critères d'inclusion. L’EVA douleur à court terme était statistiquement significativement plus faible dans le groupe biphosphonate par rapport au groupe placebo (-2,6, IC à 95% [-1,8, -3,4] p<0,00001), ainsi que l’EVA douleur à moyen terme (-2,5, IC à 95% [-1,4, -3,6] p <0,00001). Il y avait plus d’événements indésirables dans le groupe biphosphonate (35,5%) que dans le groupe placebo ((16,4%) RR = 2,95, IC 95% [1,38, 6,29]). Conclusion.
