Effects of PRMA on Objective Speech Quality

    No full text
When transmitting 32kbit/s adaptive differential pulse(ADPCM) speech using Reed-Solomon error correction coding and 16 level quadrature amplitude modulation(16-QAM), our 20 slot packet reservation multiple access(PRMA) assisted cordless telecommunications(CT) scheme supported 36-38 speech users with negligible objective and subjective speech degradation. The average number of users per slot was nearly doubled due to deploying PRMA and toll quality speech was transmitted in a user bandwidth ~11.6kHz. For a channel signal-to-noise(SNR) in excess of 25dB, a Rayleigh fading channel and mobile speeds above 2mph the speech segmental SNR degradation was less than 0.3dB

JCS „Avstonis“ possibilities for profit maximization.

    No full text
This master’s thesis discusses theoretical aspects and models of profit, profitability analysis and maximization in detail. It is noticed, that seeking to maximize their value, activities, opportunities and profits, organizations rarely use systems and methods carefully prepared in advance; rarely use thorough, complex and systematic analysis of profit and profitability ratios, as well as their evaluation and practical application needed for profit maximization. The profitability analysis of JCS “Avstonis” allows determining the most important reasons of change in income and expenses, illustrate factors forming profit quality, evaluate the relation between sales income, activity expenses and profit. The results helped to formulate possible activity directions of JCS “Avstonis” as well as set the opportunities for profit maximization. The scientific working hypothesis, formed by the author of this master’s thesis, is proven – sales volume and price model based on profit margin analysis is assessed as one of the most suitable methods for profit maximization

Behind the mirror: what Rogerian “Technique” is NOT

    No full text
This paper aims to clarify some common misunderstandings of person-centered therapy and to assert the value of person-centered care in the helping profession. Though empathic and non-interpretive “mirroring technique” is widely accepted by psychotherapists, counselors, and social workers in their interventions, its fundamental essence as the Rogerian attitude behind the “mirror” has usually been misunderstood and overlooked. Adopting a dialectical point of view, the author argues that there is a paradox in learning and applying the person-centered approach: this approach can be practiced with and without techniques.Department of Applied Social Science

The A+ of a practice doctorate

    No full text
In light of the growing trend of developing practice doctoral degree programmes in social work, the author uses the first Doctor of Social Work (DSW) programme in Hong Kong, which is a unique programme in China, as a case study to examine the pedagogy and constraints of doctoral programmes in social work. The programme serves as an alternative to a typical PhD programme and is designed particularly for seasoned practitioners in the field who strive to achieve a balance between a research and practice orientation and between an academic and a pragmatic focus. This paper emphasises that, to stand out from the crowd, practice doctorates in Hong Kong should take part in practice-based research and publish in refereed journals.Department of Applied Social Science
