    No full text
Gobius aterBellotti (1888), hitherto known from Nice and Balearic Island, is also inc1uded in the Italian ichthyofauna. It was found onPosidoniabeads near Alghero (Sardinia). The study of its morphological characters confirms that this is a good species well different fromG. nigerL

Efficient DNA base excision repair in ataxia telangiectasia cells

    No full text
Ataxia telangiectasia (A-T) cells are sensitive to a broad range of free-radical-producing and alkylating agents. Damage caused by such agents is in part repaired by base excision [base excision repair (BER)]. Two BER pathways have been demonstrated in mammalian cells: a single-nucleotide-insertion pathway and a long-patch pathway involving resynthesis of 2-10 nucleotides. Although early studies failed to detect DNA-repair defects in A-T cells exposed to ionizing radiation and radiomimetic agents, more recent experiments performed in non-dividing A-T cells and the demonstrated interaction of the A-T-mutated protein (ATM) with the BRCA1 gene product suggest that a DNA-repair defect may underlie, at least in part, the radiation sensitivity in A-T cells. We have analysed BER of a single abasic site or a single uracil in two A-T families, using an in vitro BER system. In both families, the mutation involved was homozygous and completely inactivated the ATM protein. No difference was observed between affected individuals and heterozygous or homozygous wild-type relatives in their capacity to perform DNA repair by either one-nucleotide insertion or the long-patch pathway. Hence, the putative DNA-repair defect in A-T cells, if any, does not involve BER

Bacteremia from streptococcus constellatus revealing a gastrointestinal stromal tumor

Background: Pyogenic Liver Abscesses (PLA) are the most common type of visceral abscess. They generally develop in a context of biliary disease or hematogenous seeding, but a complete diagnostic work-up is always required in order not to miss other important causes, including above all malignancies of the gastro-intestinal tract. Case presentation: Herein, we report a particular case of a 80 years-old immunocompetent woman hospitalized for sepsis. At the end of the diagnostic process, Streptococcus constellatus (Sc) was identified as the cause of sepsis, multiple PLA were found together with a previous unknown ileal malignancy. We speculated about a possible correlation among these three entities (i.e. sepsis from Sc, PLA and tumors). Conclusions: Detection of Sc in blood should raise red flags in clinicians as aggressive clinical presentation are possible

    Enrico Cattaneo : Fotografare un'idea

    No full text
Difficile fotografare un’idea”.In addition to having chronicled art and artists of the second half of the 20th century by documenting fifty years of exhibitions, art research, and major public events in Italy, Enrico Cattaneo (Milan, 1933–2019) developed a highly personal visual investigation on the modes, languages, and materials of photography. These two facets of his activity, indissolubly linked like the two sides of a coin, are recomposed in the overall profile of an author capable of questioning the technical and conceptual foundations of photography. As he himself has written: ‘The contemporary work of art is often made up of a tangible thing and an idea ... It is difficult to capture an idea on film.

Enriching Data Lakes with Knowledge Graphs

    No full text
Data lakes are repositories of data stored in natural/raw format. A data lake may include structured data from relational databases, semi-structured data (i.e., JSON, CSV), unstructured data (i.e., text data), or binary data (i.e., images, audio, video). It is usually built on top of cost-efficient infrastructures such as Hadoop, Amazon S3, MongoDB, ElasticSearch, etc. Several organisations rely on big data lakes for crucial tasks such as reporting, visualisation, advanced analytics, machine learning, and business intelligence. A major limitation of this solution is that without descriptive metadata and a mechanism to maintain it, such data tend to be noisy, making their management and analysis complex and time-consuming. Therefore, there is the need to add a semantic layer based on a formal ontology to describe the data and efficient mechanism to represent them as a knowledge graph. In this paper, we present a methodology to add a semantic layer to a data lake and thus obtain a knowledge graph that can support structured queries and advanced data exploration. We describe a practical implementation of a methodology applied to a data lake consisting of text data describing the online marketplace for lodging and tourism activities. We report statistics about the data lake and the resulting knowledge graph
