    Low-Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings in 18 Dogs With Presumed Optic Neuritis

    Canine optic neuritis has been attributed to a focal or disseminated form of granulomatous meningoencephalitis (GME) amongst other etiologies. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been proven to help differentiate the structures within the optic nerve sheath and therefore could aid the diagnosis of optic neuritis in dogs. The objectives of this study were to describe and compare the MRI abnormalities affecting the optic nerve sheath complex and optic chiasm in dogs with clinically suspected optic neuritis as a component of meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology (MUE) or as an isolated form (I-ON). Retrospective evaluation of patient details, clinical signs, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, and MRI findings of dogs with clinically suspected optic neuritis between January 2011 and May 2018 was performed. Eighteen dogs met the inclusion criteria. MRI findings included contrast enhancement of both optic nerves (11/18) and optic chiasm (6/18), changes within the CSF volume surrounding the optic nerve (10/18), changes to the optic disc (10/18), changes of size or signal affecting the optic chiasm (10/18), changes in the Short TI inversion recovery (STIR) signal of the optic nerve (7/15), retrobulbar changes (3/18), and concurrent brain lesions (13/18). A variety of subtle MRI features may indicate optic nerve involvement and low-field MRI is a sensitive method to detect changes within the optic nerve sheath complex in dogs with optic neuritis as an isolated form (I-ON) or as an extension of MUE

    Modelling non-darcian flow in one-dimensional consolidation

    A numerical investigation has been worked in order to better understand the mechanism of consolidation of fine-grained solis with very low permeability. By using a simple one-dimensional finite difference scheme it has been possible to assess the effects of laws different from Darcy's law upon the consolidation phenomenon of such materials, all other hypotheses worked out by Terzaghi being unchanged. The deviation from the classical theory of the hydraulic behaviour of soils increases the more the gradient dependent flow rate deviates from Darcy's law and the more the initial pore water pressure dissipates. First comparisons with experimental data have also been made, in order to verify the reliability of the numerical results

    Underrepresentation of older adults in clinical trials on COVID-19 vaccines: A systematic review

    During the COVID-19 pandemic older subjects have been disproportionately affected by the disease. Vaccination is a fundamental intervention to prevent the negative consequences of COVID-19, but it is not known if the needs and vulnerabilities of older people are adequately addressed by their inclusion in randomized clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy of vaccines for COVID-19. Given this background, we aimed to evaluate if current and ongoing phase II-III RCTs evaluating the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines included a representative sample of older people. A systematic literature search in PubMed and Clinicaltrials.gov was performed until May 01st, 2021. Among 474 abstracts initially retrieved, 20 RCTs (ten already published, ten ongoing) were included. In the ten studies already published, the mean age of participants was 45.2 ± 11.9 years and only 9.83% of the participants were more than 65 years, 1.66% more than 75 years and less than 1% (0.55%) more than 85 years. In the ten ongoing RCTs, many of the studies aimed at including participants older than 18 years, with one study including participants between 18 and 84 years, and two between 21 and 100 years. In conclusion, our systematic review demonstrates that in published and ongoing phase II-III randomized clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines only a tiny fraction of the most vulnerable group of older people was included, although they clearly were the first population that had to be vaccinated

    Presumed canine trigemino-abducens synkinesis in a dog

    A ten-year-old male neutered Rhodesian ridgeback cross dog was presented for the investigation of abnormal bilateral protrusion of the third eyelid when chewing. Physical, ophthalmological, and neurological examinations were unremarkable. Thoracic radiographs, abdominal ultrasound, and magnetic resonance of the brain and orbits failed to reveal any abnormalities. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed elevated protein, but the nucleated cell count was normal. trigemino-abducens synkinesis was presumptively diagnosed. Aetiopathogenesis of this condition is discussed. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of presumed trigemino-abducens synkinesis in a dog

    Neuropharmacological lesion localization in idiopathic Horner's syndrome in Golden Retrievers and dogs of other breeds

    Objective: To investigate whether idiopathic Horner's syndrome (HS) in Golden Retrievers is an exclusively preganglionic disorder based on denervation hypersensitivity pharmacological testing with phenylephrine. Animals Studied: Medical records of dogs presented with HS between 2000 and 2012. Dogs presented with additional ocular or systemic signs were excluded. Procedures: Clinical data examined included age, sex, duration of clinical signs, ancillary diagnostic test results, and time to mydriasis on topical ocular application of 1% phenylephrine. Lesions were diagnosed as postganglionic (mydriasis within 20 min) or preganglionic (mydriasis between 20 and 45 min). Results: Medical records of 21 dogs of nine different breeds were included. An etiopathogenesis for Horner's syndrome was determined in five dogs, none of which were Golden Retrievers. All diagnoses correlated with pharmacological lesion localization. Ten Golden Retrievers were included (eight male and two female) with a mean age of 8.5 years (range: 4-13). Lesion localization was diagnosed as postganglionic in eight (mean: 10 min [range: 6-18]) and preganglionic in two Golden Retrievers (20 and 24 min). All cases were unilateral and had completely resolved within 15 weeks (range: 11-20). Recurrence was not reported in any of the patients. Conclusions: Idiopathic postganglionic HS was diagnosed in eight of 10 Golden Retrievers contradicting previous reports of a purely preganglionic localization. Etiopathogenesis of canine idiopathic HS remains to be determined; nevertheless, a vascular etiology cannot be excluded. Future studies using magnetic resonance angiography may aid in clarifying the pathogenesis

    Results of magnetic resonance imaging performed within 48 hours after head trauma in dogs and association with outcome: 18 cases (2007–2012)

    Objective—To review results of MRI performed within 48 hours after head trauma in dogs and identify associations between MRI findings and outcome. Design—Retrospective case series. Animals—18 dogs that underwent MRI within 48 hours after known head trauma. Procedures—Medical records were reviewed for information on signalment, history, clinical findings, MRI findings, treatment, and outcome. Results—2 dogs were euthanized, 1 died, and 1 had major persistent deficits. The remaining 14 dogs had a good outcome, including 9 that recovered completely and 5 that had minor persistent deficits. The most common MRI abnormalities were intra-axial changes (n = 13) and extra-axial hemorrhage (13). Intra-axial changes were best seen on T2-weighted and fluid attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) images. A mass effect was detected in 9 dogs, 6 of which had a midline shift (mean, 2.18 mm). Three dogs had transtentorial herniation, and 2 had transcranial herniation. Extra-axial hemorrhage was best seen on FLAIR images. The most common location was subdural, with subdural extra-axial hemorrhage most often seen on the same side as the injury. Epidural hemorrhage was seen in 2 dogs. The affected area was larger in these dogs than in dogs with subdural hemorrhage. One dog required surgery and the other was euthanized. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—Results suggested that in dogs with acute (< 48 hours’ duration) head trauma, T2-weighted and FLAIR images provided the most diagnostic information. Dogs with injuries affecting the caudal fossa or affecting both the rostral and caudal fossae typically had poorer outcomes

    At close distance Family practices of Italian young adults during the pandemic

    According to David Morgan (1996), the family is never simply a manifestation of ascribed roles, social functions, or formal prescriptions: family is a «doing». Taking this assumption as a starting point, this article explores the ways of doing family of young adults living in Italy, before and during the Covid-19 pandemic, focusing on their relationships with parents and friends. The analysis is based on interviews conducted during the lockdown and the weeks that followed it (March-June 2020) with forty young women and men aged between 23 and 29, with medium to low levels of education. This sample is part of an ongoing qualitative-quantitative longitudinal study on life courses in Italy (ITA.LI Italian Lives: Longitudinal Study on Life Courses in Italy). The analysis shows how the interviewees renegotiate their affective connections, rework their practices of constructing the family and feeling at home. On the one hand, negotiations within the family of origin turned these young adults into active agents who transform their households; on the other, friends are often included in a familial semantic classification, which is pivotal to the reorganization of identity and everyday life during the pandemic
