Decomposition of modal acoustic power due to cascade–turbulence interaction
This paper investigates the modal acoustic power (MAP) generated by a cascade of flat-plate airfoils interacting with homogeneous, isotropic turbulence. The basic formulation for the upstream and downstream acoustic power based on the analytical theory of Smith [Discrete frequency sound generation in axial flow turbomachines, Reports and Memoranda no. 3709, Aeronautical Research Council, 1972] and its generalization to broadband noise due to Cheong et al. [High frequency formulation for the acoustic power spectrum due to cascade–turbulence interaction. Journal of the Acoustical Society of America 119 (2006) 108–122]. The MAP has been expressed as the sum of cut-on acoustic modes, whose modal power is the product of three terms: a term that specifies the wavenumber distribution of mean square velocity, a sound power factor that specifies the efficiency of radiation, and an acoustic blade response function. The effect of these terms on the MAP is discussed in detail in this paper. The acoustic blade response functions are found to determine the modal lines of minimum sound power in mode-frequency maps of the MAP. The upstream sound power factor is less than the downstream power factor, which is generally large, especially away from the cut-off frequency. Both power factors are small for modes close to cut-off. Modes close to cut-off, therefore, do not contribute significantly to the radiated acoustic power in the downstream direction, even though the modal pressure amplitude for these modes is high since they are excited close to resonance. For an isotropic turbulent gust, the mean square velocity wave number spectrum reduces only the magnitude of the MAP without altering the distribution of power in the frequency-mode map<br/
Computation of aeolian tone from a circular cylinder using source models
The generation of aeolian tones from a two-dimensional circular cylinder situated in a uniform cross-flow is investigated. The major emphasis here is placed on identifying the important noise generation mechanisms. Acoustic-viscous splitting techniques are utilized to compute modelled acoustic source terms and their corresponding acoustic fields. The incompressible Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equation is used to compute the near-field viscous flow solution, from which modelled acoustic source terms are extracted based on an approximation to the Lighthill’s stress tensor. Acoustic fields are then computed with an acoustic solver to solve the linearized Euler equations forced by the modelled source terms. Computations of the acoustic field based on the approximated Lighthill’s stress tensor are shown to be in good agreement with those computed from the surface dipole sources obtained using Curle’s solution to the acoustic analogy. It is shown in this paper that the stress tensor source term in the streamwise direction makes a comparable, but slightly larger contribution to the overall radiated field, compared with that due to the stress tensor in the direction normal to the mean flow. In addition, it is shown that shear sources, which arise due to the interaction between the fluctuating velocity and the background steady mean velocity, make the greatest contribution to the acoustic field, while the self-noise sources, which represents the interaction between the fluctuating velocities, is shown to be comparably negligible.<br/
High frequency formulation for the acoustic power spectrum due to cascade - turbulence interaction
This paper investigates the noise radiated by a cascade of flat-plate airfoils interacting with homogeneous, isotropic turbulence. An analytic formulation for the spectrum of acoustic power of a two-dimensional flat-plate is derived. The main finding of this paper is that the acoustic power spectrum from the cascade of flat airfoils may be split into two distinct frequency regions of low frequency and high frequency, separated by a critical frequency. Below this frequency, cascade effects due to the interaction between neighboring airfoils are shown to be important. At frequencies above the critical frequency, cascade effects are shown to be relatively weak. In this frequency range, acoustic power is shown to be approximately proportional to the number of blades. Based on this finding at high frequencies, an approximate expression is derived for the power spectrum that is valid above the critical frequency and which is in excellent agreement with the exact expression for the broadband power spectrum. The formulation is used to perform a parametric study on the effects on the power spectrum of the blade number, stagger angle, gap-chord ratio, and Mach number. The theory is also shown to provide a close fit to the measured spectrum of rotor-stator interaction
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
