Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Modelling and numerical simulation of mass and heat transfer induced by evaporation
Phase change generates a cooling of the liquid-gas interface, and consequently, it creates thermal and solutal gradients. These homogeneities spread in the core solution and produce, eventually, a fluid flow. This convection can be due to the surface tension and/or buoyancy variations. Experimental works have shown that some coating thicknesses stemming from drying processes are correlated to the size of the convection cells in the fluid region. A thorough understanding of the physical phenomena responsible to fluid convection should contribute to improve the control of deposit quality.Based on numerical and experimental works, we have studied the onset of convection for three kinds of models for the drying process of a Polyisobutylene-Toluène solution: A pure thermal model which is valid for short times, a solutal model devoted to the simulation of long times, only, and a thermal/solutal coupled model which takes into account the heat and mass transfer over a long time period of the evaporation process. The transient nature of the evaporation problem raises the issue of how to define the onset of the convective flow from a diffusive solution. Indeed, this flow motion occurs from a seed which is a small perturbation of the transient diffusive solution. If the perturbation is too weak, the necessary time interval for a significant growing of its magnitude will be greater than the time scale of the transient regime: thus the solution will never be considered as convective. Consequently, the influence of the perturbation is fundamental. In previous numerical works, this perturbation was imposed at the initial state, often through a random spatial distribution applied to the velocity or temperature field. In the present contribution, we have adopted a physical model where the adiabatic lateral walls have been replaced by diathermal walls: The local thermal inhomogeneities create a very weak flow acting as a small disturbance for the transient diffusive solution. In this thesis, we have developed a numerical model to evaluate the thresholds between the diffusive solutions and the convective flows, for the thermal, solutal and thermal/solutal coupled models, for two- and three-dimensional approximations of the Polyisobutylene-Toluène liquid film. Space-time diagrams and convective cell reconstructions at the liquid-gas interface by a Voronoï algorithm allowed us to get a better understanding of the way the disturbances propagate from the lateral walls for finally giving rise to a convective flow in the core flui
Hybrid and multi-scale modeling for the simulation of fluid flows and heat transfer in microchannels
This method must be able of capturing at the same time the fluid/solid interaction at the small scale but also the flows induced by the inlet/outlet boundary conditions at the large scale. To this aim, we have adopted an approach coupling the continuum model in the bulks of the channel and the discrete model at the vicinity of the wall, based on an atomistic representation of the fluid and the solid. The Navier-Stokes and energy equations, coupled with an equation of state, are approximated by a finite volume method and the molecular dynamics simulations are used to finely represent the interaction between the fluid and the solid. This hybrid method requires information transmission between the former two regions: averaged quantity in molecular dynamics simulations are imposed as boundary conditions for the continuous model and constrained dynamics, coupled with a thermostat Langevin, is used to control in the molecular level. A set of small molecular dynamics blocks, smartly distributed all along the wall/fluid interface, allows to treat flow and heat transfers in a long micro/nano-channel with a reasonable computational cost. After a validation step, the hybrid multi-scale simulations of complex fluid flows in the channel composed of the platinum wall have been conducted for argon in incompressible liquid or compressible gaseous phase with and without phase change in the vicinity of the wal
Modeling and numerical simulations of gas flow in micro-porous media anisothermal
Ces corrélations sont basées sur une modélisation de type Darcy-Klinkenberg-Forchheimer de la perméabilité apparente en fonction des nombres adimensionnels de Rek, Ma, Kn, porosité et KdThis thesis presents a study of gas flows in an anisothermal porous medium consisting of pores of micrometric size based on simulations, at the pore scale, of flows and heat transfers in Representative Elementary Volumes. When the size of the pores is very small, unlike the macroscopic scale, a hydrodynamic slip appears, a temperature jump and a diffusive flow jump between the fluid and the porous matrix. In addition, the flow of gas in very small systems generates compressibility and viscous dissipation effects that can no longer be overlooked. Although many works in the literature relate to the modeling and numerical simulation of gas flows in porous media, the originality of the macroscopic numerical model which was developed during this thesis is to take into account all these physical phenomena. This made it possible to carry out a parametric study on a wide range of parameters of these flows (Reynolds numbers, Rek, Knudsen, Kn, Mach, Ma) and for five different geometries of porous media characterized by their porosity and Darcy's permeability Kd.The study is, first of all, conducted for weakly compressible flows using the Darcy-Klinkenberg and Darcy-Forchheimer models, with and without slip. The computer code developed in the laboratory specifically for this study is validated by comparisons with results from the literature using these two models. The Forchheimer corrective term as well as different types of inertial regimes have been identified and compared with other works in the literature. The rest of the work is devoted to compressible flows, in particular to the thermal effects of dynamic origin associated with these flows (viscous dissipation and work of pressure forces). The dynamic and thermal results are first presented by studying a porous medium made up of rectangular obstacles, then we have reproduced this study for other rectangular and circular geometries.Parametric studies are carried out by varying the motor parameters of the flow (mean pressure and inlet/outlet pressure difference), with the aim of covering regimes where inertia, compressibility and rarefaction come into play, which we also made it possible to develop maps, according to these parameters, of the various physical quantities (temperatures, velocity, terms of sources, apparent permeability...) and of dimensionless numbers (Rek, Ma, Kn ...). For large variations in pressure, the powers of the viscous forces and of pressure (effects of purely dynamic origins) play a non-negligible role: for example, it is shown that they can generate average temperature gradients of more than 10000 K/m (average temperature deviations of approximately 3.2K over 240µm length of the porous medium when the inlet/outlet pressure difference is 1.6 bar, for an average pressure of 1.1 bar). Overall, it is shown that the temperature of the solid matrix of the porous medium is often higher than that of the fluid, which makes it difficult to use the local thermal equilibrium assumption when constructing a macroscopic mean model. It is also shown that the apparent permeability estimated on each REV can remain constant, increase or decrease from the input to the output of a given porous medium, depending on the degree of inertia and rarefaction of the medium. Correlations of the apparent permeability are constructed for each of the geometry studied, then global correlations for all the porous media studied. These correlations are based on a Darcy-Klinkenberg-Forchheimer model of the apparent permeability as a function of the dimensionless numbers of Rek, Ma, Kn, porosity and Kd. The complexity of these correlations depends on the type and number of geometries used to establish the
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Hybrid modelling by supervised learning method for multi-scale coupling of weakly rarefied gas flows in channels
This problem concerns both micro-pipes at ambient pressure and centimetric size pipes at very low pressure, as soon as the diameter is between 10 and 1000 times the mean free path of the gas molecules. Under these conditions, the mechanics of continuous media can be applied in the bulk of the pipe, which is not the case in the vicinity of the walls over a thickness of about {O}(lambda). In particular, a dynamic slip and a temperature jump are observed between the fluid and solid wall quantities.Although continuous models exist expressing these jumps as a function of shear rate and heat flux, these relationships still depend on quantities that result from interactions between gas molecules and solid atoms. Moreover, these models do not allow to take into account a possible particular physics which would take place at very small scale (adsorption, trapping of molecules, atomic roughness of the wall, ...). The objective of this work is to move away from near-wall models to a local atomic/molecular approach and to couple it with continuum mechanics in the flow environment. This multiscale coupling is based on a hybrid numerical approach, {finite volume}/{molecular dynamics}, allowing to communicate the large scales of the flow with the small scales related to the near wall interactions. Since a molecular simulation is too expensive to perform in the vicinity of the entire wall, supervised learning methods are used to model the local molecular response to a local macroscopic solicitation. The molecular dynamics simulations are then performed in very small domains, called virtual plots, independently of the communication values from the continuous to the discrete domain. Through an explicit hybrid coupling method and then a more efficient implicit hybrid coupling method, we show that it is possible to recover in academic cases the flows obtained with the simple Navier/Maxwell slip relations with a very good accuracy. Our hybrid coupling method is then applied to more complex geometries and to atomic walls, where the slip may differ significantly from classical model
