Portfolio of recorded performances and exegesis: Messiaen’s musical language for the jazz pianist - an exploration through performance.

Moving beyond Gunther Schuller’s Third Stream amalgamation of classical and jazz, this study explores whether the musical language of Olivier Messiaen can make a valid contribution to jazz piano performance. Initially, my project sought to answer such questions as: What elements of the musical language of Messiaen already exist in the jazz vocabulary? Am I able to extend this further? What are the timbral structures and pianistic effects within Messiaen’s musical language? What will be the most effective application of Messiaen’s musical language to jazz piano performance? Endeavouring to answer the final question led me to consider such aspects as whether the project should be limited to quoting Messiaen motifs, arranging Messiaen melodies, replacing jazz harmonic structures on standards with examples from Messiaen’s musical language or whether it would be better to approach the research conceptually. The work of Hubert Nuss provided encouraging reassurance that this was not an impossible task. In order to articulate this conception, the initial challenge was to decide how the classical and jazz worlds might meet in a ‘Messiaen’ technique. The approach adopted was similar to that used for undergraduate jazz study, namely, immersion in the piano scores and recordings of Messiaen’s music as well as by live performances. This was followed by the development and assessment of a contrived approach when specific techniques, such as tonal colourings or harmonic structures, were developed through prepared exercises and consciously included in my performance. It was then compared with an intuitive approach when no such precise parameters were established. This submission consists of CD recordings of two public recitals and an exegesis. It documents the development of this Messiaen technique and discusses its application in my performances. It also demonstrates the ways that Messiaen’s musical language can be used within jazz piano performance to provide a colour that distinguishes jazz piano performance in a competitive field.Thesis (M.Mus.) -- University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, 201

Plan BWhat differentiates one successful, long-lasting company from another? The major distinguishing feature in comparing company’s success or non-success is in their most important competitive advantage and key ingredient to success – organizational culture. The long term success of companies has had more to do with company values, vision, and personal beliefs then market focus, competitive positioning, and resource advantage (Palmer, 1999). The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the current organizational culture of XYZ Manufacturing Company. The study assessed the organizational strengths and weaknesses, provided an aid for decision making during strategic planning, and established measures for benchmarking and evaluating change in the organization over time. In order to meet the goals of the study, data was gathered from 40 employees of the organization. The data was collected using a survey that was developed by the researcher through collaboration with the president of the organization and is based on the Denison Culture Model (2003). The survey was divided into four categories that included: Involvement, Business Principles, Working Relationships, and Employee Satisfaction and yielded a 77.5% response rate. Results of the survey are displayed into a circular model for ease of identifying and analyzing the areas of strength and concer

Two or Three Things We Know About Him. In 1977, Jacques Lefrere found an Iliad in Spanish which contained a statement of ownership by Isidore Ducasse, Count of Lautréamont, which reveals possession of another book. Its analysis, combined with a remarkable synthesis of the criticism, provides great insight in locating the work — and the author, to some degree.

The work of El-Mahdi Acherchour puzzles readers by his title, Lui, Le livre, and mostly by his complex aspect which reveals incontestably the desire of the author to transgress the novels traditional categories. His manner to mix different genres confers to his writing a kind of structure absolutely exploded. In our paper, we will try to understand how this generic strategy is used in this narrative and to explain what the author thinks according to this hybrid genre

Problema neantului în opera lui Mircea Eliade

Mircea Eliade still wakens a large interest, both in Romanian and international literary circles as his complex personality, but especially his studies, greatly inspired, partly due to the orientation towards the past, and partly to their synchronic amplitude, which can hardly be included in a category by the hermeneutists. Petru Ursache, who dedicated many years to the elucidation of the mysteries created by the great scholar manages to lift a great part of the veil which covers the works of the historian of religions. In the paper the author approaches one of the main topics of Mircea Eliade’s mythological system, the problem of nothingness.

Forecasting the size distribution of a population of savings accounts: a Markovian approach

Distinguished Alumni Award Program author. Professor Lui Pao Chuen (Presented 29 Mar 02). NPS Hall of Fame author (Presented 28 March 2002)The Markov chain model, with extensions to cover the phenomena of arrivals and departures, was applied to a population of savings accounts, in a savings institution, to forecast the size distribution, total number of accounts and total amount of savings of the population. The stochastic processes governing the behavior of the population were first assumed to be time stationary. This assumption was then relaxed and an econometric model was used to predict future values of the parameters of the non-stationary model. Both models were validated by comparing predicted size distributions, total number of accounts and total amount of savings against observed values. The chi square goodness of fit test was used in the comparison. The fundamental matrix of the stationary model was also used to predict the equilibrium distribution and related measures of the populationApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited.Major, Singapore Armed Forceshttp://archive.org/details/forecastingsized109451662
