[[abstract]]The natural radioactive nuclides of K-40, U-238 and Th-232, in lake and creek mud around the nuclear facility site boundary on the Tsing Hua campus were measured by a high purity germanium detecting system. Absolute activities of mud samples were determined using standardized NBS soils. Results show the concentrations of K-40, U-238 and Th-232 are 470-790, 22-50 and 15-48 pg/kg for dried lake-sediments, respectively. For water samples, the concentration is much lower, 15-50 pg/l for K-40, 0.5-1 pg/l for Th-232 and concentration of U-238 is below detection limit[[fileno]]2060101010033[[department]]工程與系統科學

Fiber Bragg Grating sensors for structural health monitoring of Tsing Ma bridge: background and experimental observation

    No full text
The rapid expansion of the optical fiber telecommunication industry due to the explosion of the Internet has substantially driven down the cost of optical components, making fiber optic sensors more economically viable. In addition, the rapid development of fiber-optic sensors, particularly the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors offers many advantages and capability that could not be achieved otherwise. In the past few years, fiber Bragg grating sensors have attracted a lot of interest and they are being used in numerous applications. This paper describes the FBG sensors developed for structural health monitoring, and were installed on Hong Kong's landmark Tsing Ma bridge (TMB), which is the world longest (1377 m) suspension bridge that carried both railway and regular road traffic. Forty FBG sensors divided into three arrays were installed on the hanger cable, rocker bearing and truss girders of the TMB. The objectives of the study are to investigate the feasibility of using the developed FBG sensors for structural health monitoring, via monitoring the strain of different parts of the TMB under both the railway and highway loads as well as comparing the FBG sensors' performance with the conventional structural health monitoring system - Wind and Structural Health Monitoring System (WASHMS) that has been operating at TMB since the bridge's commissioning in May 1997. The experimental observations in this project show that the results using FBG sensors were in excellent agreement with those acquired by WASHMS. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Dynamic load monitoring of the Tsing Ma Bridge using a high-speed FBG sensor system

Sensors for strain measurement are indispensable for structure monitoring. Fiber optic sensors based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology are found to be suitable for strain sensing and have a number of advantages compared to conventional strain gauges. Recently, we carried out a field trial with a FBG sensor array system on the world’s longest span suspension bridge carrying both trains and regular road traffic (The Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong). The experiment was carried out with a high-speed dense-channel demultiplexing/interrogation system for FBG sensor arrays (DC to ~20 kHz for all channels simultaneously). This system is originally developed for the detection of high-speed events (vibration, impact location and acoustic emission), but in this field experiment the high readout frequency has been used for noise reduction by averaging to achieve sub-pm resolution. More than 20 FBG sensors divided into 3 arrays were installed on different parts of the bridge (suspension cable, rocker and frame section). The goal of this field trial is to monitor the strain of the different parts of the bridge under railway load and highway load. Various measurements were performed including an overnight measurement of about 20 hours with a sampling frequency of about 500 Hz. The measurement results reveal the presence of significant higher frequency components in the FBG sensor signal during train passages. The results of the FBG sensor also compared with existing strain gauges. Although the sensors are not located at exactly the same location, great resemblance has been found

VP Ellipsis Correlatives in Mandarin Chinese

[[abstract]]This paper proposes a syntactic account for the licensing condition and semantic requirement of VP ellipsis in Mandarin Chinese. I argue that Chinese VP ellipsis are four constructions related, i.e. ye-shi, ye-you, mei-you, and ye-modal. It is found that the constructions involving VP ellipsis can be captured under a hierarchy of the projection TopP>FocP>(AspP)/(ModP)>VP. The subject in the target conjunct is a contrastive topic (Hole 2004) while the preverbal adverbs ye is a contrastive focus (Rooth 1992, Tsai 2001) occupying the specifier of FP with respect to its focused nature. Aspect phrase and Modal phrase are brought up to trigger the head movement and satisfy the focus criterion (Brody 1990, Kiss 1998). Under the feature-checking mechanism, the subject and the focus element are merged to eliminate the [Topic] and [Focus] feature respectively. The proposed VP ellipsis constructions satisfy the e-Givenness condition (Merchant 2001), a requirement that deleted phrases express semantic entailment information.[[fileno]]204_JA07_2008_v4_p73[[department]]語言學研究

    Prosodic Correspondence in Tone Sandhi

    No full text
[[abstract]]Correspondence in OT is a relation between pairs of forms. The correspondence relation is originally proposed to stand between underlying and surface forms (i.e., Input-Output correspondence) but is later extended to relations between the reduplicant and its base (i.e., Base-Reduplicant correspondence) and between morphosyntactically related outputs (i.e., Output-Output correspondence). Drawing evidence from tone sandhi in Mandarin (Cheng 1973a; Hsiao 1991; Shih 1986; Hung 1987; Zhang Z. 1988; Zhang N. 1997; Chen 2000; Lin 2000a, 2000b, 2000c; among others) and Sixian-Hakka (Hsu 1996, Hsiao 2000), this paper argues that the correspondence relation should be extended to stand between outputs that are related in the prosodic structures. Prosodic units have long been observed to play crucial roles in speech production/comprehension (Speer et al 1989, Shattuk-Hufnagel and Turk 1996, Gerken 1996b) as well as in phonology (Selkirk 1984a, 1984b, 1986; Nespor and Vogel 1986; Shih 1986; Hsiao 1991, 1995). Prosodic structures are cognitively real units; therefore, forms related in the prosodic structures should be capable for correspondence evaluation. Since Selkirk (1986), it is generally agreed that prosodic structures, though sensitive to the morphosyntactic structures of the language, are by no means isomorphic to them. Therefore, in the prosodic correspondence model proposed, the prosodically related output forms evaluated for correspondence are not necessarily morphosyntactically related. The paper is organized as below: §2 examines Mandarin tone sandhi and argues that tone sandhi in Mandarin can be analyzed easiest if tonal outputs which are prosodically related rather than morphosyntactically related are evaluated for correspondence. The prosodic correspondence model is proposed in §2.5. §3 examines Sixian-Hakka tone sandhi which reinforces the need for prosodic correspondence. §4 proposes prosodic constraints to account for tone sandhi domains of Sixian-Hakka and Mandarin. §5 concludes the paper.[[fileno]]204_JA07_2005_v1_p229[[department]]語言學研究

Wh-interrogatives in Saisiyat and Lexical Merger Parameter

    No full text
[[abstract]]This short study proposes that under the Lexical Merger Parameter hypothesis (Tsai 1999), northern Saisiyat is justified as a language that resorts to a mixed parameter setting. Evidence for this claim comes firstly from the formation of indefinite wh construals, which can be established either at the morphological domain through (partial) reduplication, or at the clausal domain via unselective binding by a group of clausal operators. Furthermore, the lack of island effects also conforms to this speculation. Such finding enriches the theory of wh-dependency from a typological point of view.[[fileno]]204_JA07_2008_v4_p117[[department]]語言學研究
