Extended realities and discrete events simulations : A systematic review to define design trade-offs and directions
Extended Reality (XR) technologies are increasingly popular to support the engagement of different audiences and stakeholders with Discrete Event Simulations (DES) due to their capability to deliver more accessible visual and immersive experiences. XR applications can be developed either using modules integrated into DES software or game engines, providing different sets of opportunities in the environment design. However, there is a lack of development guidelines for such environments, considering visualization, information presentation, interaction, and navigation aspects. The paper presents a systematic review of the use of XR for DES, relating the results to XR design heuristics to identify and discuss major design tradeoffs. Finally, a case study from the mining sector is exemplified to illustrate possible. solutions to balance the trade-offs. © 2024 The Author
Multisensory Nudging: A Design Intervention for Sustainable Hand-Washing Behavior in Public Space
The scarce availability of water in highly populated cities is about to become a social problem. While the water service companies work on improving the distribution network in order to reduce losses, it is evident that one of the main problems is due to an excess of use of this resource by users. This consumption is relatively controlled when excessive consumption is clearly associated, in the consumer mind, with high costs. However, when users are in public places they tend to consume water because of a loss of correlation with costs. In this paper, we describe the design of a device to be installed in public environments, which aims to reduce the consumption of water. The device measures in real time the flow of water and sends the user visual and sound information trying to create a link between consumption and costs. The device has been installed in a university campus bathroom and has been tested. Test results show a reduction in water consumption, especially in the interactive prototype approach compared to the conventional treatment. Further modifications for future development of the interactive device is also discussed
The Talk of Maine piece on expert birders, Wendy Howes of Wilton and Wally Sum
The Talk of Maine piece on expert birders, Wendy Howes of Wilton and Wally Summer of Canaan, who attempted to break the official American Birding Association Big Day record for Maine, set in 1993 by Lysle Brinker from the Belgrade area, and his team. The author accompanied the two birders as they traveled to numerous sites in Maine on a tight, pre-arranged schedule in late spring. They ultimately identified a total of 140 birds by sight and/or sound, falling short of the record, which was 163
Regge-plus-resonance predictions for neutral-kaon photoproduction from the deuteron
We present a Regge-inspired effective-Lagrangian framework for neutral-kaon photo-production from the deuteron. Quasi-free kaon production is investigated using the Regge-plus-resonance elementary operator within the relativistic plane-wave impulse approximation. The Regge-plus-resonance model was developed to describe photoinduced and electroinduced charged-kaon production off protons. We show how this elementary operator can be transformed to account for the production of neutral kaons from both protons and neutrons. Our results compare favourably to the sole H-2(gamma, K-0) YN dataset published to date
Wally Olins (1930–2014), corporate identity ascendancy and corporate brand hegemony. Celebrating the life of Wally Olins: Leading corporate identity exponent and prominent brand proponent
This article outlines the nature, significance and legacy of Wally Olins (1930–2014) vis-a-vis corporate identity and brand management. Celebrated for his corporate identity/corporate brand consultancy work he is also known for his considerable published output relating to corporate identity and branding. In the writer’s estimation, Olins helped to inspire a generation of marketing scholars who, in turn, established corporate identity a distinct area of marketing thought. The author notes the significance of his binary definitions of corporate identity. Olins states that corporate identity is essentially design focused. He also states that it relates to an institution’s core traits and activities. As such, his reflections explain why, today, there are different approaches (both academic and practitioner) to the area. His explication of the corporate personality is also of note. It is argued that Olins was part of the English corporate-level marketing revolution where, along with academics and practitioners, the later including David Bernstein and Stephen King, he accorded importance not only to products and services in marketing contexts but, significantly, to corporations and other organisations too. For much of his career (1965–2000) he was a champion for corporate identity and the author herein offers two explanations why Olins distanced himself from the corporate identity construct post 2000 and focused on brands, and corporate brands
We Love Libraries!
The author reflects on the history and condition of the Friends of Libraries Movement in Georgia. The author mentions that the state has nearly 200 groups that advocates library use and reading. The author also reflects on the effect of the current economic crisis on library use in the country. The author cites an example of fund raising activities and community awareness programs of library advocates in the country
