The concept of peace in the Tao Te Ching
Full text linkThis thesis represents a first attempt to analyze Lao Tzu's main method of resolving the social and political problems in Ch'un Ch'iu and Warring States Periods. Lao Tzu, the founder of Taoism, suggested many solutions that could bring an end to the conflicts and to the ending of the disunity of China. Examples of these include the reform or abolishment of some ancient Chinese institutions as well as new principles for the enhancement and preservation of life. All these ideas were to become crystallised in Tao Te Ch'ing, which became an important religious text. In particular, the aspect of Lao Tzu's methods for solving the social and political problems of China in the Warring States Period needs more attention. In each chapter of the Tao Te Ch'ing there was a main emphasis on peace as the main method of developing social cohesion and as a cure to all fundamental human problems. Therefore, Lao Tzu's ideas about peace and his methods of solving the problems of the Warring States period are significant and from the main focus of the thesis

Understanding Deregulated Retail Electricity Markets in the Future: A Perspective from Machine Learning and Optimization
Full text linkOn top of Smart Grid technologies and new market mechanism design, the further deregulation of retail electricity market at distribution level will play a important role in promoting energy system transformation in a socioeconomic way. In today’s retail electricity market, customers have very limited ”energy choice,” or freedom to choose different types of energy services. Although the installation of distributed energy resources (DERs) has become prevalent in many regions, most customers and prosumers who have local energy generation and possible surplus can still only choose to trade with utility companies.They either purchase energy from or sell energy surplus back to the utilities directly while suffering from some price gap. The key to providing more energy trading freedom and open innovation in the retail electricity market is to develop new consumer-centric business models and possibly a localized energy trading platform. This dissertation is exactly pursuing these ideas and proposing a holistic localized electricity retail market to push the next-generation retail electricity market infrastructure to be a level playing field, where all customers have an equal opportunity to actively participate directly. This dissertation also studied and discussed opportunities of many emerging technologies, such as reinforcement learning and deep reinforcement learning, for intelligent energy system operation. No full textWe propose in this paper a semantic web driven learning management architecture that supports collaborative learning, i.e., learning by reusing, sharing experience and building knowledge together within a particular domain. We address different phases of the development in line with the knowledge life cycle, from ontology building to learning experience management and reuse of semantics for social network analysis in learning. We also describe an Ontology-Driven WSDL-First (ODWF) hybrid implementation strategy to realize the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and exploit power of the semantic web technology. We give scenarios in which the system can be used to assist collaborative learning in different domains through learning experience sharing and knowledge construction

Knowledge based Learning Experience Management on the Semantic Web
Full text linkLearners engaged in informal learning tasks often find sharing their learning experience to be helpful. Informally, a learning experience describes what a learner has done, with what learning resources. We explore technological issues in a semantic web driven learning experience management architecture that supports collaborative learning, i.e., learning by reusing, sharing experience and building knowledge together within a particular domain. We demonstrate that by exploiting the semantic web technology, it is possible to manage the learning resources more intelligently through the use of semantically annotated learning experiences. Work has been done in line with the knowledge life cycle, from building ontology on learning experience, creating semantic annotation to reusing semantics for the learning experience management. Functionalities of ontology management, semantic annotation and reuse have been provided in a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). We give a scenario in which the system can be used to assist collaborative learning in different domains through learning experience sharing and knowledge construction
