Measuring Tie Strength in Online Social Networks
在過去關於社會網絡的研究中,發現了許多它所具備的特性,例如小世界現象、群聚現象等,讓人們得以認識這個由「人」所構成的網絡,並將之運用在其他各種領域。但是,大部分的研究僅僅考慮連結的存在與否,關於連結強度的探討卻是較為缺乏的,由於人與人之間的關係並非一致或對等的,我們將網絡視為有方向性、且連結帶有「重量」的,試著從中觀察連結強度在社會網絡巨觀特性中所扮演的角色。於是,我們蒐集了部落格網站中的資料,記錄使用者間各種互動,定義了不同的關係,並計算其互動的次數作為連結的強度。我們首先觀察在不同的關係定義之下,連結強度的分布狀況,接著比較使用者所擁有的連結數和其強度總和,提出了另一種衡量使用者的方法。我們也在計算平均最短路徑、群聚係數時,將連結強度一起考慮進來,發現了過去未曾注意到的有趣現象。最後,我們首次比較了兩節點間雙方面的連結強度,證明了在社會網絡中使用者間的互動是有其對稱性和相關性的。我們相信這份關於連結強度的實證研究,讓我們對於社會網絡的巨觀現象能有進一步的了解,也給後續的研究一個新的方向。In the previous studies, people have found many properties of social network, such as “small world phenomenon” and high clustering. But, most of the researches merely consider whether this is a tie, rather than the strength of tie.
Since the relationship between people is not identical or symmetric, we regard the network as a directed graph, and the tie on it have its “weight”. Under this circumstance, we wonder what is the role of tie strength in those properties of social network. Therefore we parse data of a blogging site, and record the interaction between the users on it. After defining different types of relationship, we then count the times of action as the strength of tie.
First, we examine the distribution of tie strength, from both network and users’ view, and then compare to the distribution of link degree. To evaluate the node, we propose a new measurement, calculated by the strength of tie. Next, we take tie strength into account of average shortest path and cluster coefficient. We find out some interesting characteristics people did not pay attention to before. Finally, we examine the symmetry of the network and analyze the correlation between tie strength of nodes for the first time. We believe that this empirical study of tie strength can help us further understand the macro characteristics of social network, and provide a new perspective for the future researches
Application of Radio Frequency Identification for Environmental Management in ELV Shredding Plants
國內四合一回收制度的推展成功,使得廢棄物減量與資源回收成效享譽國際,也促使資源回收產業於國內蓬勃發展,制度中的補貼機制為產業發展的主要推手,為使補貼機制能順利運作,藉由稽核認證作業的輔助與監督,以確保受補貼業者均依法確實妥善回收處理資源回收物品。 目前稽核認證作業模式仍主要仰賴大量人力執行,因此人員執行的完整性對制度能否正常運行影響甚鉅,因於作業中人為操控的比例甚高之因素下,制度施行以來仍不斷地有管理上弊端情事發生。 目前環保署納管的資源回收業者以廢車回收處理業為最多數,而其中廢車粉碎處理業又與其他資源回收材質管理模式較為相近,因此本研究以廢車粉碎處理業為標的,欲將RFID系統導入廢車粉碎處理業的環境管理作業中,以資訊化管理模式減低作業中人為操控因素,提高稽核作業的人員執行的確實度;並藉由無線通訊即時傳輸的特性,立即更新作業所需資訊,確保比對的正確性;另外,利用科技工具縮短現場巡查與後端資訊整理作業的時間,提高資訊彙整的精確性,達到強化管理、縮減成本與降低風險的目的。 經實地測試,藉由RFID系統確實達到原規劃目的,促使人員按照標準逐一查核,不僅提高作業的精確性,並縮減查核時間近20分鐘,減少資料整理、文件運送與訓練的人力耗用成本每年約20萬,RFID系統開發支出約7年半可回收,對於廢車處理業者管理的效益將更遠大於實質成本效益,未來將可藉以推廣至其他各類公告資源回收物,使資源回收體系管理更加完善。Because the four-in-one resource recycling policy was adopted, the waste reduction and the recycling effectiveness in Taiwan have earned international acclaim. It also promotes the development of the recycling industry and the subvention system is absolutely critical. The counseling and supervision of auditing and certification system ensures the smooth operation of the subvention system and it also ensures proper and legal resource recycling and disposal by the firm. The auditing and certification system is strongly dependent on the manpower, so ensuring the auditors carry it out exactly is crucial for this system. For this reason, it brought about some abuses in the management of system. The ELV industry is the most important recycling industry managed by Taiwan EPA, and the management of the ELV shredding plants is similar to other recycling plants. There are therefore reasons to choose the ELV shredding plants for this research and attempt to make use of radio frequency identification for environmental management in ELV shredding plants. To rely on technological man-management to reduce the factors of human activity, and to improve the accuracy in execution. To update the information promptly to ensure correct comparison by the use of wireless communications. To reduce the time of patrol of environmental management and data compilation by the technology. To intensify management, bring costs down and reduce risks. By the field testing, the application of radio frequency identification accomplished the purpose desired. The auditors must check off all the items one by one dependent on standard operation procedure when use of radio frequency identification for environmental management in ELV shredding plant. It improves the accuracy in execution and reduce the time of patrol of environmental management about 20 min. It also reduces in cost from man power by data compilation, transporting and training about two hundred thousand NT dollars. Development of radio frequency identification system can take more than seven and a half years recoup the investment, but the leveraging of radio frequency identification is bigger for environmental management in ELV recycling system. Furthermore, it can apply to other mandatory recyclables to make future recycling system perfectly

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Reduction of computational effort in structural dynamics calculations
The time-history analysis of realistic structures can often be computationally quite expensive. The main reason for the high volume of computation is the fact that the time interval must usually be very small. The factors that limit the time interval fall into three categories: (1) The input may involve very rapid variations, as in some earthquake acceleration records or in pressures for blast loading. (2) Stiffness of members can undergo rapid or discontinuous changes because of plastic behavior or unloading. (3) Models may have to include many degrees of freedom. The higher modes that are present may have very short periods, which require very short time intervals for stability and convergence of the calculation and for accuracy.A coordinated set of methods is developed to handle each of these limitations, finally permitting the use of fairly large time intervals while preserving high accuracy.The first limitation is overcome by introducing integrated displacements as new variables in integrated equations of motion and also by using a more accurate integration method for ordinary differential equations than is usual. These techniques together with a simple interpolation procedure make it possible to pass right through points of yield and unloading without restarting time intervals at those points. The ordinary calculations require such restarting or very small time intervals to preserve accuracy over large time. In this way, the second limitation is removed.The third limitation is handled by treating both relaxed constraints and small masses by what is essentially an extension of the idea of static condensation. The higher modes are really not considered dynamically, but the additional degrees of freedom do properly modify the lower modes and their frequencies. The calculation is carried out without finding modes and frequencies explicitly. An unusual but simple perturbation method is used in which all the perturbations that can be obtained accurately are found by direct numerical integration of the perturbation equations. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
