Nonlinear optical effects of the third order in silicon photonic crystal cavities : High frequency self-induced oscillations and stimulated Raman scattering
In this thesis, we studied third order nonlinear optical effects in photonic crystal cavities. The first of those effects is is the phenomenon of high frequency (GHz) self-pulsing in these cavities, which originates from a modulation of the transmission of the cavity due to the interaction between the free-carrier dispersion and the two-photon absorption. We have observed these self-induced oscillations for the first time in silicon photonic crystal nanocavities, with a frequency of about 3 GHz and a high spectral purity. We have developed a model to analyze the mechanisms that govern the onset of these oscillations, as well as the amplitudes of the fundamental and harmonic frequencies of these oscillations. This self-pulsing phenomenon would allow us to realize realize ultra-compact microwave sources made of silicon. The second phenomenon studied is that of Raman scattering, which is the only way to obtain lasers fully in silicon demonstrated so far. The Raman scattering was measured first in narrow photonic crystals waveguides (W0.63) of length 100 microns, where we could obtain a number of Stokes photons up to 9, showing that the stimulated Raman scattering predominated in these waveguides, although we have not been able to obtain a true Raman laser effect in them. We then measured the Raman scattering in doubly resonant nanocavities specifically designed from these waveguides to optimize the Raman effect, with quality factors up to 235000 for the Stokes resonance. Although we could only measure spontaneous Raman scattering in these cavities, with a Purcell factor of 2.9, the theoretical study that we conducted on the Raman lasers, which agrees perfectly with the experimental results, shows that it would be possible to obtain a Raman laser in these cavities with a threshold below the milliwatt, provided we reduce the losses due to the free-carrier absorption. This could be accomplished by decreasing the free-carrier lifetime, for example by removing the free carriers from the silicon using a MSM junction
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Silicon photonic crystal telecom detector using two-photon absorption
Silicon non linear optics is of considerable interest to the scientific community because of its applications to integrated optoelectronics. In order to observe non linear phenomena at a reasonable power, one has to work with very high confinement factor (Q/V) optical resonators. As they are now a fully mastered planar technology, two-dimensional photonic crystal microcavities are an efficient way of actually obtaining such resonators in silicon. In this thesis, an application of photonic crystal microcavities to telecom wavelength detection is demonstrated. Bulk silicon is transparent at these wavelengths, except when working at very high power density. Only then, two-photon absorption (TPA) becomes significant. In our detector, TPA is enhanced in the microcavity. A metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) junction then ensures very fast carrier collection. We studied the physics of the detector and focused on two aspects: collection of carrier in a photonic crystal, and impact of the metal on the optical quality factor. Standard models for dark current and photocurrent in MSM junctions were adapted to the photonic crystal case study. Fabrication of the photonic crystal junction was carefully undertaken and optimized in the clean room of the IEF laboratory. The current circulating in the fabricated device resonates as the same wavelength as the optical cavity. Response can be as high as 90 mA/W, and the optical-electrical bandwidth is larger than 1 GHz. In addition to the demonstration of the detector, some original results were obtained. It is possible to control the carrier concentration in photonic crystal microcavities by tuning the external polarisation of the MSM junction. Finally, the detector allows one to measure important parameters of the physics of the cavity, such as the residual linear absorption coefficient, and the thermal resistance
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
On-chip Particle Accelerators
This thesis explores the development of a miniaturized particle accelerator integrated onto a silicon chip, addressing the challenges posed by the massive infrastructure and high costs of conventional accelerators (CERN, XFEL, SOLEIL). Based on the concept of dielectric laser accelerators, the proposed device exploits the interaction between an electron beam and an electric field confined within a photonic crystal cavity. This principle relies on phase matching between the electron velocity and the field, made possible through the precise design of suspended silicon nanostructures, providing strong optical confinement, a low modal volume, and compatibility with semiconductor industry fabrication techniques. The research work includes the design and modeling of photonic crystals to optimize phase matching and energy transfer, the development of an innovative optical coupling solution using fiber injection adapted to the constraints of a transmission electron microscope, and the implementation of a technological solution to prevent charge accumulation on the structure during electron beam passage. The structures were fabricated in a cleanroom using advanced nanofabrication techniques. The fabricated devices were characterized through quality factor and resonance frequency measurements, as well as EELS experiments, enabling the evaluation of the coupling efficiency between electrons and cavity modes. The optical coupling efficiency of the developed fiber-to-chip interface was also measured to optimize the device's performance. The results obtained in this thesis contribute to silicon photonics in general and, more specifically, demonstrate the strong potential of the developed structures for on-chip particle acceleration. This work paves the way for promising applications in high-energy physics, imaging, and the development of compact radiation sources
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
