    L’objectif de cette étude était d’évaluer l’efficacité d’une fiche personnalisée d’instructions d’hygiène orale (POIF) sur l’hygiène bucco-dentaire et la qualité de vie liée à la santé orale (OHRQoL) des personnes âgées en institution. 46 résidents ont été répartis en deux groupes : un groupe intervention (POIF + instructions verbales + kit personnalisé) et un groupe contrôle (instructions verbales + kit). Après trois semaines, des améliorations significatives ont été observées dans l’indice de plaque et la propreté des prothèses pour le groupe intervention, avec un contrôle de plaque supérieur (p = 0,023) et une amélioration de la qualité de vie orale (p = 0,006). L’indice de revêtement lingual n’a pas montré de changement. Bien que le groupe intervention ait connu une amélioration significative de l’hygiène, la différence entre les groupes n’était pas significative pour le score total GOHAI. Les résultats confirment que les POIF améliorent l’hygiène bucco-dentaire des personnes âgées en institution.</p

    Evaluation clinique de la justesse des différents matériaux et techniques d'empreintes pour crêtes édentées

    La justesse des empreintes de maxillaires édentés effectuées avec les alginates (ALG), les poyvinyles siloxanes (PVS), les polyvinyles siloxanes modifiés (PVSM) avec de l'oxyde de zinc eugénol (ZOE) et une caméra intraorale (TRI) est comparée à l'empreinte contrôle (pâte thermoplastique et ZOE). Sur 12 patients 60 empreintes sont effectuées selon 5 techniques et ensuite scannées puis comparées à l'aide d'un logiciel. Les déviations sont reportées pour la surface entière (ES) et pour des régions d'intérêt. Les empreintes testées étaient significativement différentes de la surface entière du contrôle (p=.009), et des différences significatives de justesse ont été trouvées en comparant ALG (1.21±0.35 mm) avec PVS (0.75±0.17 mm; P=.008), PVSM (0.75±0.19 mm; P=.012) et TRI (0.70±0.18 mm; P=.006). Les empreintes aux PVS, PVS modifié et le TRI avaient des déviations similaires et aboutissent à des résultats cliniquement acceptables. Par contre, les empreintes alginates ne devraient pas être choisies pour des empreintes définitives

    Digital scans for denture bearing areas: evidence of recent innovations

    Advances in dentistry as well as prevention policies have led to a decline in the percentage of totally edentulous people, nevertheless this percentage is still very high among the very old in developed countries. Complete edentulism is still highly prevalent in countries with socio-economic hardship. The need to replace all teeth with a prosthetic appliance remains a treatment modality used daily by dentists. These prostheses aim to restore masticatory function, aesthetics, and give the patient a better ability to speak. The study, promotion, and improvement of the digital workflow in the fabrication of complete removable dental prosthesis (CRDP) has an immediate impact on the quality of life of older adults in Europe and developed countries. Furthermore, it will have an important impact on the accessibility, the quality and production of these prosthetic devices in other contexts with socio-economic challenges soon. Although the process of fabrication is still dependent on measurement and intraoral registrations, the workflow can lead to a standardization of the quality of the resulting prosthesis, an increased access with additive manufacturing and lower cost. For the prosthesis to remain stable in the mouth during chewing and speech, it must rest on the entire surface of the ridges available and create a vacuum between the base of the prosthesis and the tissues. The determination of the extension of the prosthesis is a critical phase during the manufacturing of a CRDP. To do this, the clinician goes through a precise impression of the jaws and a determination of the peripheral contour of the prosthesis. Currently, the 'technique for tissue impression for a complete denture starts with the registration of the peripheral functional seal and registration of all the edentulous ridges including the intaglio surface of the future prosthesis. This technique is tedious and therefore clinicians are always looking for a simplified alternative. Digital arch scans are becoming a common technique for young graduate dentists, moving away from the conventional technique but their validity for the registration of denture bearing areas is still to date questionable. In a first study, we have identified the most appropriate scan for the registration of the entire denture bearing area and have validated the methodology for the evaluation of the accuracy of the digital scans. The investigators have demonstrated the feasibility of digital scans of denture bearing areas and identified their shortcomings, investigated the digital workflow and compared it to the conventional one in terms of fit and retention of denture bases as well as patient reported outcomes. The fit of denture bases was good as visualized by metrology generated color maps. Computer assisted manufacturing such as 3D printing or milling can have advantages for both clinicians and patients in terms of fit. The excellent clinical fit can be translated to less adjustments visits in clinical practice, hence increasing patient comfort and reducing clinician’s stress. Clinicians have the information that allows them to select the workflow that is most adequate for the patient. The digitization of the process includes the care instruction forms that need to be communicated with the patient and caregiver, a proactive approach to prevent tooth loss in advanced age. </p

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
