Multiple scattering of classical electromagnetic waves by volume gratings: completion of Fujiwara's solution

    No full text
© Taylor and Francis. We present a general formulation for multiple scattering of classical electromagnetic waves by volume gratings. Fujiwara's electron multiple scattering theory is modified and extended to the case of both, the transmission and the reflection geometries. The analytical solution for the amplitude Φ_n corresponding to the nth scattering order is given. The convergence of the solution is proved for the transmission by a sinusoidal symmetric phase grating. By employing a structural Green's function and a vectorial formulation for diffraction of a classical electromagnetic wave by a thin periodical slab, as previously given by Alvarez-Estrada and Calvo, the solution for the back scattered field amplitude is derived and shown to coincide with that obtained within the framework of the multiple scattering theory.Depto. de ÓpticaFac. de Ciencias FísicasTRUEpu

Mid-infrared absorption spectroscopy is highly relevant for a wide range of sensing applications. In this letter, we demonstrate a Fourier-transform spectrometer chip based on the principle of spatial heterodyning implemented in the silicon-on-insulator waveguide platform, and operating near 3.75-\u3bcm wavelength. The spectrometer comprises a waveguide splitting tree feeding to an array of 42 Mach-Zehnder interferometers with linearly increasing optical path length differences. A spectral retrieval algorithm based on calibration matrices is applied to the stationary output pattern of the array, compensating for any phase and amplitude errors arising from fabrication imperfections. A spectral resolution below 3 nm is experimentally demonstrated.Peer reviewed: YesNRC publication: Ye

Highly sensitive silicon Mach-Zehnder interferometer-based ultrasound sensor

    No full text
We report a highly sensitive ultrasound sensor based on an integrated photonics silicon Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). One arm of the MZI is located on a thin membrane, acting as the sensing part of the device. Ultrasound waves excite the membrane's vibrational mode, thus inducing modulation of the MZI transmission. The measured sensor transfer function is centered at 0.47 MHz and has a -6 dB bandwidth of 21.2%. For 1.0 mW optical input power, we obtain a high sensitivity of 0.62 mV/Pa, a low detection limit of 0.38 mPa/Hz1/2 at the resonance frequency and a large dynamic range of 59 dB. In preliminary ultrasound imaging experiments using this sensor, an image of a wire phantom is obtained. The properties of this sensor and the generated image show that this sensor is very promising for ultrasound imaging applications.ImPhys/Computational ImagingImPhys/OpticsImPhys/Medical Imagin

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Reaping the benefits of machine learning pattern recognition in nanophotonic component design

Integrated nanophotonic component design processes are often constrained by computational resources. Advances in simulation and optimization tools have allowed more efficient exploration of larger design spaces. These developments reduce the time-consuming and intuition-limited effort of encoding physical insights into the design structure. However, we argue that efficient optimization is only part of the solution to tackle larger multi-parameter design spaces. Finding patterns in such a space can be more valuable than identifying the individual optima alone. This is particularly true when transitioning from simulation to real device fabrication, where considerations such as tolerance to fabrication imperfections, bandwidth, etc. take an important role but are ignored at the optimization stage. The elucidation of patterns in a complex design space enables efficient identification of designs addressing these additional considerations. As an example, in this presentation we demonstrate how limited data collected from the optimization process of a multisegment vertical grating coupler can be used to identify such patterns through the application of machine learning techniques. The identified patterns, some more interpretable than others, can be used in multiple ways: from speeding up the remaining optimization process itself to gaining insight into the properties of an interesting subset of designs. Together those insights offer a significantly clearer picture of the design space and form the basis for making much more informed decisions on the final designs to be fabricated.Peer reviewed: YesNRC publication: Ye

Possibilities of Bragg filtering structures based on subwavelength grating guiding mechanism (conference presentation)

    No full text
Silicon-on-insulator (SOI), as the most promising platform, for advanced photonic integrated structures, employs a high refractive index contrast between the silicon \u201ccore\u201d and surrounding media. One of the recent new ideas within this field is based on the alternative formation of the subwavelength sized (quasi)periodic structures, manifesting as an effective medium with respect to propagating light. Such structures relay on Bloch wave propagation concept, in contrast to standard index guiding mechanism. Soon after the invention of such subwavelength grating (SWG) waveguides, the scientists concentrated on various functional elements such as couplers, crossings, mode transformers, convertors, MMI couplers, polarization converters, resonators, Bragg filters, and others. Our contribution is devoted to a detailed numerical analysis and design considerations of Bragg filtering structures based on SWG idea. Based on our previous studies where we have shown impossibility of application of various 2 and \u201c2.5\u201d dimensional methods for the proper numerical analysis, here we effectively use two independent but similar in-house approaches based on 3D Fourier modal methods, namely aperiodic rigorous coupled wave analysis (aRCWA) and bidirectional expansion and propagation method based on Fourier series (BEX) tools. As it was recently demonstrated, SWG Bragg filters are feasible. Based on this idea, we propose, simulate, and optimize spectral characteristics of such filters. In particular, we have investigated several possibilities of modifications of original SWG waveguides towards the Bragg filtering, including firstly - simple single-segment changes in position, thickness, and width, and secondly - several types of Si inclusions, in terms of perturbed width and thickness (and their combinations). The leading idea was to obtain required (e.g. sufficiently narrow) spectral characteristic while keeping the minimum size of Si features large enough. We have found that the second approach with the single element perturbations can provide promising designs. Furthermore, even more complex filtering SWG structures can be considered.Peer reviewed: YesNRC publication: Ye

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
