    This project is made possible with funding by the Government of Ontario and through eCampusOntario's support of the Virtual Learning Strategy.The Fluid Power Trainer simulator, comprised of a series of circuits, provides learners with a digital simulator, enabling them to learn and practice their skills virtually, better preparing them to apply these skills in the shop and in industry. The integration of a high-quality digital simulator provides learners with 21st century digital tools as life-long learners. Learners can repeatedly practice their skills as much as needed so that they master the necessary foundational skills. With the simulator, learners will build circuits that model hydraulic principles; manipulate industry-specific virtual equipment; and learn how to read hydraulic drawings. The simulator allows learners to go back and refresh their skills as many times as they need to. Learners are provided with the ability to practice and fail without faculty watching over their shoulders, providing a safe place to learn at their pace

This OER module teaches students how to utilize effectively the ideas and information from authors of online or print materials in college assignments requiring research. The skills students learn through this OER will help them to avoid unintentional plagiarism by showing them correctly how to include material written by someone else in their own work.Write It Again uses an instructional support approach to help students develop essential academic writing skills such as summarize, paraphrase, use direct quotation, and cite (APA & MLA) to avoid plagiarism. Through this resource, students can view instructional videos, example videos, tips, and checklists. In addition, students can engage in practice activities; they have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of sample articles and are guided through the steps to summarizing the entire article, paraphrase a portion of it, or correctly incorporating a direct quote from it. They are also assisted with developing APA or MLA in-text citations and Reference/Works Cited citation listings. Students can either work on their own (comparing their work to suggested answers to gain confidence and competence to engage in scholarly writing) or download their finished work for submission to their professor

    Hamming distance as a metric for the detection of side channel in 802.11 wireless communications

    A wireless network can be exploited in many ways. One way is through intentionally corrupting the Frame Check Sequence (FCS) field by using a different Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) polynomial in order to create a side channel. Malicious nodes exploit the fact that normal unsuspecting nodes will immediately drop erroneous frames. A metric called the Hamming Distance (HD) was proposed for detection which distinguishes legitimate from illegitimate errors. The idea is to apply this HD measure to compare CRC values that are generated by different CRC polynomials. The hypothesis is that the average HD between two CRC values generated by two different CRC polynomial would be significantly far apart than those that are generated by the same CRC polynomial. The simulator can be used anywhere and anytime, including on mobile devices. Learners can practice their skills as much as needed so that they master the foundational skills necessary for construction management. The simulator allows learners to synthesize the key skills and knowledge gained from other courses.     Evaluating Hamming Distance as a CRC-based Side-channel Detection Measure in Wi-Fi Networks

    AbstractWireless technology has become a main player in communication through its desirable mobility characteristic. However, like many technologies, there are ways that it can be exploited. One of these ways is through side-channel communication, whereby secret messages are passed along by the purposeful corruption of frames. These side channels can be established by intentionally corrupting the Frame Check Sequence (FCS) field by using a Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) polynomial that is different from the standard CRC polynomial. Malicious nodes can exploit the fact that normal unsuspecting nodes will drop these frames since they appear as naturally corrupted frames. This paper presents a CRC Hamming distance metric as a feature for the detection of this type of side-channel communication. We previously proposed the use of Hamming distance as a metric to compare CRC values that are generated by different CRC polynomials. The hypothesis is that the mean Hamming distance between two CRC values generated by two different CRC polynomials would be significantly far apart than the mean Hamming distance of a CRC value of a frame that was naturally corrupted but was generated by the same CRC polynomial. Previously, to test that hypothesis, we used F-Scores on real data experiments under varying noisy conditions and side-channel throughput to show that there is a consistent and significant difference between the mean Hamming values of naturally corrupted frames to those that use the Koopman polynomial to calculate the CRC for side-channel communications. In the present work we evaluate the Hamming distance using Perceptron Learning and the Pocket Algorithm to classify packets as side-channel or otherwise

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
