The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The process of plasma spray-physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD) consists in evaporating the material in powder form using a DC plasma jet to produce coatings by condensation or deposition of nanoaggregates. In the conventional PS-PVD process, all the material treatment takes place in a medium-vacuum atmosphere, which limits the evaporation and requires the use of high-power torches. In this work, an extension of the conventional PSPVD process to a two-chamber process is proposed and then explored by means of numerical modeling and simulation. The powder is evaporated in a high-pressure chamber (10⁵ Pa) connected by an expansion nozzle to a low-pressure deposition chamber (100 or 1 000 Pa), enabling more energy-efficient evaporation of YSZ powder of high particle-size, while using torches of reasonable power. The operating conditions favoring the evaporation of the powders were obtained from experiments. A discrete-phase model, which takes in account the powder-plasma interactions, was selected with respect to the experimental results. This model allowed to i) optimize the evaporation of the powder and ii) study different geometry configurations in order separate the flow of vapor from the not fully evaporated particles and avoid nozzle clogging

An atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition process equipped with an axial injection torch was chosen for the TiO2 thin films synthesis. A dynamic deposition mode, i.e. moving the substrate holder in front of the plasma jet, was developed to cover a square centimeter surface. Towards the integration of the titania films as the active layer in DSSCs, a porous columnar structure crystallized under the anatase phase was required. The optical emission spectroscopy analysis of the discharge, without and with titanium precursor, provided information about the huge thermal flux transferred to the substrate by the plasma, thanks to gas temperature from 3000 to 4000 K, at distances between 5 and 15 mm from the nozzle. The atomic relative densities estimation, mainly of nitrogen, oxygen and titanium, combined with the process parameters influence on the film microstructure highlighted several growth mechanisms. From these results, a microstructure diagram was built to predict more easily the morphology and the crystallinity of the TiO2 films deposited on silicon substrates, as a function of microwave power and torch-substrate distance. Optimized conditions were found for the synthesis of thin films matching the DSSC active layer specifications. The process parameters were then adapted to replicate the microstructure on glass/FTO substrates, confirming the microstructure diagram, even though the thin film did not fulfill the requirements. Perovskite solar cells were finally made to investigate the interest of the layers developed on silicon substrates

Cette formulation sera utilisée tive pour le développement ultérieur du modèle et son extension à des gaz diatomiques.DC plasma spraying is a coating technology that utilizes the energy of a plasma flow to accelerate, heat up, melt and deposit the coating powder on a substrate. For a high reproducibility in coating production, the plasma flow should have low fluctuations of enthalpy and velocity, and the erosion of electrodes should be limited. Plasma torches with a cascaded anode yield a more stabilized arc length and could achieve the first goal. However, a stabilized arc does not guarantee a low erosion rate of electrodes and in particular anode. An insight into the electromagnetic and thermal processes inside the plasma torch could help to control the properties of the plasma flow issuing from the torch and extend the lifetime of the torch parts. This work dealt with the simulation of the commercial plasma torch SinplexPro™ manufactured by Oerlikon Metco operated in argon under atmospheric pressure. It involved two steps. The first consisted in developing a LTE model with the inclusion of the electrodes in the computational domain. The arc voltage and cooling loss predicted by this model were in good agreement with the experimental values for a low gas flow rate and high electric current. For such operation conditions, the model predicted a constricted anode arc attachment. Then, two methods were tested to rotate the constricted anode arc attachment: gas swirling injection and axial external magnetic field. The swirling gas injection was found to be more efficient for a gas injection angle of 45° than for an angle of 25°, which is the angle used in the actual plasma torch. The second step of this study was about the development of a two-temperature model. The latter considered two formulations for the enthalpy of electrons and heavy species differing in the attribution of the ionization energy to electrons or heavy species. The 2T model with both formulations projected a diffuse anode arc attachment and arc voltage that agreed with the experimental values for a wider range of arc current and gas flow rate. The mode of anode arc attachment was confirmed by the observation of tested anodes. The formulation of the energy equation with the ionization energy assigned to the electrons had an acceptable computational cost and yielded reasonable results in terms of electron and heavy species temperature. It will be used to develop further the model and apply it to diatomic gases

The Axial Injection Torch has been used to inactivate microorganisms without thermal effect thanks to the species and UV of the plasma. In order to complete this inactivation process, TiO2 thin layers with photocatalytic properties were produced by PECVD using this same source. An analysis of the plasma by optical emission spectroscopy and the determination of the surface temperature of the substrate were carried out. The plasma was analysed with and without the titanium precursor, also with a substrate in the axis of the discharge to be as close as possible to the deposition conditions. The excitation and gas temperatures are respectively between 7000 to 9500 K and 2700 to 3700 K. These high temperatures produce heat transfer to the substrate. Depending on the operating conditions, the measured substrate surface temperatures are between 110 and 320°C. Bacterial inactivation tests by plasma were carried out on agar in order to evaluate the effect of the operating parameters of the TIA on the efficacy of the treatment. The surface temperatures measured could be linked to the microstructure diagram of the TiO2 thin layers. When the surface temperature of the substrate increases, the proportion of the rutile phase also increases up to 30% in this study. This microstructure diagram made it possible to select a few thin layers to evaluate their photocatalytic activity. The total degradation of stearic acid, used to simulate a pollutant, was reached in 40 minutes. The thin layer of TiO2 with the greatest photocatalytic activity was used to couple its action to plasma disinfection, 4.2 Log reduction could be achieved

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
