Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
The translation of cultural references in the Italian dubbing of television series
This research describes the strategies adopted by dubbing professionals (mainly
translators) in their translations for dubbing of television series, from English into
Italian. More specifically, it means to account for the norms governing the work of
the translators in this field. In order to draw substantial conclusions, the analysis is
conducted on a corpus of television fiction shows, which is not only sufficiently large
but also varied in terms of genre, content, language use, and target audiences.
The main focus of the analysis is the translation of culture specific references; a
subject that has widely been recognised by scholars as being one of the most
problematic translation issues, not only in the case of translation for dubbing but also
in other areas such as literary and drama translation.
One of the hypotheses presented is that the social and historical context in
which dubbing originally came to be in Italy had an impact on its subsequent
evolution and can still be relevant when dealing with issues of censorship and
manipulation of contents.
The methodological foundations of this research rest on Toury’s (1980, 1995)
notion of norms in translation. Toury (1980: 51) considers norms to be central to the
act and the event of translating. The ultimate aim of this study is, therefore, to map
out the strategies activated by translators in response to the cultural environment in
which they operate, and to detect the norms that are prevalent in the case of dubbing
television series into Italian.
The analysis is carried out on a corpus of over 95 hours of television
programmes, whole episodes of three fiction series belonging to different genres:
Friends (sitcom, USA); Life on Mars (science fiction/police procedural drama, UK);
Six Feet Under (drama, USA). All the culture specific elements present in the corpus
have been detected and their adaptation into Italian analysed from a quantitative and
qualitative point of view in order to highlight the prevalent translational behaviours.Open Acces
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dubbing a TV Drama Series: The Case of the West Wing
T he Spanish dubbing of The West Wing has been acknowledged as one of the best dubbings of a T V drama
series in Spain. T his article focuses on the dubbing of Episode #10 from The West Wing (1999), entitled “In
Excelsis Deo”, a Christmas special episode brimming with cultural references, intertextual references, register
switchings, close-ups, and all the ingredients that are usually accounted for in dubbing. T his study shows an
analysis of the quality of dubbing in just one episode of this mainstream American T V series dubbed into
Spanish. In order to do so, a qualitative analysis according to the episode’s adherence to a checklist of
dubbing standards, compiled in Chaume (2012), but taken from some other authors (Whitman-Linsen, 1992,
among others), has been carried out
Localizing media contents: Technological shifts, global and social differences and activism in audiovisual translation
In the field of media communication, digitalization facilitates the creation, production, distribution and potential manipulation of new audiovisual contents. Digitalization has also led to the multiplication of audiovisual distribution platforms and devices. The staggering number of hours of audiovisual content localized every single day, and the fast pace with which this is taking place, have brought a wider and better choice for audiences, as well as a growing diversity in audiovisual content consumption, and in the use of different translation practices. This chapter defines different localization practices, and examines three critical issues concerning localization: technological change, global and social difference, and the new active role of audiences. We will discuss the role of digitalization and technology in current localization practices, and the topic of global difference and social difference, in relation to audiovisual translation modes. Finally, we will explore the role of the new active audiences and their impact on emerging localization practices
Tècniques de traducció de la informació no verbal en els textos audiovisuals
Aquest article pretén analitzar diferents exemples de la interacció entre la comunicació verbal i la comunicació no verbal en la practica de la traducció audiovisual, i mostra el grau de flexibilitat que té el traductor per tal de resoldre les restriccions comunicatives, pragmàtiques i semiòtiques que origina l'esmentada interacció.
