Drug Consumption Rooms: An Exploration of Harm Reduction, De-stigmatization, and Challenges Faced by Staff in Denmark
Drug Consumption Rooms (DCRs) are facilities designed with the purpose of harm reduction for drug-using individuals. This paper provides insight into these emerging government facilities, their staff and how they might contribute to the de-stigmatization of drug users. It addresses one of the most well-known and feared addictions, drugs, that historically, have been present on a global level, condemning many individuals to a life of addiction. It affects both those who suffer from substance addiction and the ones around them. Therefore, we believe that a cultural and humanistic point of view is indispensable to address potential worthy responses to this marginalized group in our society, in this case, the DCRs. It has been selected to use a theoretical framework based on cultural theories, which exists in the theory of recognition, phenomenology, and practice theory. This includes sociological and anthropological aspects that have served to decode and interpret the concept of stigma that drug users are subjected to. Using the gap found in the literature, this paper analyses the point of view of three staff members in the rooms situated in Copenhagen and Odense. This paper concludes that these facilities provide a social and communal aspect and a complex set of services for the users, that result in harm reduction. DCRs also face a range of challenges, that influence their ability to fight the stigmatization of drug users. Keywords: drug consumption rooms, DCR, Denmark, stigma, marginalization, recognition, users, de-stigmatisation. <br/
Happiness in the Workplace: an Autoethnographic Study
This project aims to understand what organizational, social, and individual factors affect the feeling of happiness in the workplace. It will focus on international students who combine their work life with their daily academic and private lives. The project acknowledges research done by various people looking into the key aspects such as happiness, work-life balance, autoethnography as a research method, and thematic analysis to establish common themes regarding fostering and maintaining workplace happiness. The theories employed cover both philosophical and theoretical aspects of the topic. The study emphasizes the complexity of the aspects and factors that affect feelings of motivation and commitment, as well as burnout, stress, and frustration in the workplace. The findings support the notion that happiness in the workplace is a complex, broad phenomenon that depends on power dynamics, relationships, the impact of alienation, and individual needs. The analysis of the data collected shows that various influences play a part in employee happiness. The discussion will look at the findings from the study, explain what it means, and go into further detail about how the theories were used to analyze the data. Lastly, the reflection will cover the methodology and theories used and how a different approach would have changed the project and affected the findings. This project offers practical insights into creating environments conducive to collaboration, appreciation, and the happiness of employees
An exploration into the relationship of Danish residents to ICT and privacy
This paper will examine some of the existing controversies surrounding online presence and privacy. It will discuss the Cambridge-Analytica scandal, the failures of GDPR, the inequality that ensues, and other problematic issues that arise through the uncontrolled use of social media and other commonly used apps. It will cover 5 interviews where the interviewees have been selected through the criteria of age, nationality, and experience with technology. The interviews are conducted with the purpose of finding out the participant’s opinions on Information Communication Technologies (ICT) and privacy. Their perspectives are going to be analyzed through the recurring themes of the interviews: convenience, domestication, awareness, and surveillance. Being based in Denmark, the subjects of observation are Danish residents. By the end of the paper, a conclusion regarding the relationship between residents of a highly digitized society and ICT will be reached.<br/
"To prove there is another way" - A case study on ICT & rehabilitation in Storstrøm prison
This MSc thesis explores the application of the principles of Nordic Exceptionalism (normalization, openness, education, responsibility, security) in the Danish incarceration system. Specifically, ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with inmates, teachers, and guards were held in the closed Storstrøm prison in Falster, with the main focus on understanding how Information and Communication Technologies affect the inmates’ reintegration into society. An Actor-Network approach was chosen to follow the human and non-human actors involved in this rehabilitation process. The starting point of our research was the collection of information about the use of an intranet platform made to accomplish the educational needs of the inmates, called SKnet. During our endeavor, we engage with matters of rehabilitation, political decisions, public opinion, and technological innovation in the context of the incarceration system. We present our findings on how the aforementioned principles of Nordic Exceptionalism are applied or overlooked in Storstrøm prison and what is the effect of ICT in this process
Exploring the Potential of Telepresence Robots for Individuals Living Abroad and Their Families:A Qualitative Approach
The emergence of telepresence robots (TPRs) as mobile tools that can enable remote presence and interaction has been the focus of many endeavors that have provided insights on TPRs’ application in research, educational contexts, professional training, social inclusion and sense of embodiment. In this paper we have conducted semi-structured interviews with five individuals living abroad and one family member of a person living abroad to explore how TPRs can be employed to strengthen family ties and enhance the sense of presence in order to alleviate the emotional struggle that is often reported in these groups. Based on the participants’ responses we have showcased the relation between different technological features and communication, addressed concerns regarding the use of TPRs, and recognized activities that can be recreated remotely with the use of a TPR to potentially create an enhanced feeling of connection. The analysis presented could be the premise for subsequent implementation of TPRs in a way that is considered meaningful by people living in distance from their families
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
