Does Open Access Matter? 100 Stories of Impact: One Year Later
A year ago, bepress Managing Director Jean-Gabriel Bankier and Product Marketing Manager Promita Chatterji wrote that it was time to reevaluate the way we talk about open access: we need to talk about why it matters. Since bepress joined Elsevier in August, the conversation has gained new momentum as librarians and scholars ask what the news means. With added visibility and resources, the bepress community can broaden the traditional open access framework and add its voice to the discussion of why open access matters, on campus and off. Join us for a free webinar update on last year’s 100 Stories of Open Access Impact. Promita Chatterji will share new anecdotes that show why open access matters, using bepress’s framework of demonstrable impact for the library and institution

What kinds of resources and advice can you provide to support journal performance? Promita will share resources and lead a discussion addressing these concerns. Attendees will identify journal goals, identify challenges, and share success stories. Attendees will come away with a set of action items and resources to help them develop workshops or engage editors eager to take their journals to the next level
Publishing in the hands of librarians
"It is one of the noblest duties of a university to advance knowledge, and to diffuse it not
merely among those who can attend the daily lectures but far and wide."
— Daniel Coit Gilman, founder of Johns Hopkins University Press
Today’s institution-led publishing can take many forms. As sophisticated technologies
become more user friendly, ever more usable digital publishing platforms are emerging.
Increasingly, librarians and academics themselves are the new vanguard.
Two panelists will each present what they are doing to further the cause of university- or
academic-led publishing. Promita Chatterji, Product Manager at bepress, will describe
the drivers behind open access publishing globally. She will discuss the traits of what
makes for a flexible, secure, usable and scalable publishing platform, as well as how the
most successful platforms will seamlessly integrate with the library’s institutional
repository. Next, Aajay Murphy, Repository and Publishing Manager at Kennesaw State
University, will demonstrate how the library’s open access publishing program supports
KSU’s strategic goal of internationalization by partnering with global research
organizations. Aajay will discusses the principles that shaped the evolution of their
program, including fostering international participation in all steps of the publishing
process.
Session attendees will get an understanding of why open access publishing matters to
universities globally and the specific steps universities are taking to achieve their goals

Librarians and academics are often the new vanguard in this evolving landscape. During this session, each of the panelists will present their current activities and explain how they are collaborating in order to further the cause of university-led and academic led-publishing.
Yvonne Desmond, a library administrator, will describe how her library is managing an entire open access publishing program the covers a range of disciplines. She will talk about publishing strategy, managing contributors and stakeholders, and communicating successes and milestones. Kevin Griffin, an academic at the same institution, will describe how he publishes his own peer-reviewed journal-managing submissions, handling peer review, assigning content to issues, tracking readership and reporting to stakeholders. He will provide an overview of how he launched the journal and how he has made inroads within his discipline. Promita Chatterji, a technologist, will suggest what traits make for a flexible, secure, usable, and scalable publishing platform, as well as how the most successful platforms seamlessly integrate with institutional repositories. </p
