MRI has progressively gained in importance in clinical use because of its ability to produce high quality images of soft tissue throughout the body without subjecting the patient to any ionizing radiation. In addition to exquisite anatomical detail obtained from the conventional MRI, complementary physiological information is also available through emerging specialized applications of MRI such as magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging, quantitative susceptibility mapping, functional MRI, and diffusion MRI. Despite its great versatility, MRI is limited by the long time required to acquire the data needed to form an image. Since a typical MRI protocol consists of multiple scans of the same patient, the total scan time is commonly extended beyond half an hour. During the session, the patient must remain perfectly still within a tight and closed environment, raising difficulties for certain populations such as children and patients with claustrophobia. The long acquisition time of MRI not only reduces the availability of the MRI scanner, but also results in patient discomfort, which often leads to motion that degrades image quality. Therefore, reducing the acquisition time of MRI is a well-motivated problem. This thesis proposes acquisition and reconstruction methods that increase the imaging efficiency of MRI and two of its emerging specialized applications, magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging and quantitative susceptibility mapping. In particular, each of the proposed methods increases the imaging efficiency by achieving at least one of two aims: reduction of total scan time and improved image quality by mitigating image artifacts, while minimizing reconstruction time.by Itthi Chatnuntawech.Ph. Since its development in the 1970s, MRI has gained tremendous importance in clinical practice because it can produce high quality images of diagnostic value in an ever expanding range of applications from neuroimaging to body imaging to cancer. By far the dominant signal source in MRI is hydrogen nuclei in water. The presence of water at high concentration (-50M) in body tissue, combined with signal contrast modulation induced by the local environment of water molecules, accounts for the success of MRI as a medical imaging modality. As opposed to conventional MRI, which derives its signal from the water component, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) acquires the magnetic resonance signal from other chemical components, most frequently various metabolites in the brain, but also signals from tumors in breast and prostate. The spectroscopic signal arises from low concentration (-1 - 10mM) compounds, but in spite of the challenges posed by the resulting low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the development of MRS is motivated by the desire to directly observe signal sources other than water. The combination of MRS with spatial encoding is called magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI). MRSI captures not only the relative intensities of metabolite signals at each voxel, but also their spatial distributions. While MRSI has been proven to be clinically useful, it suffers from fundamental tradeoffs due to the inherently low SNR, such as long acquisition time and low spatial resolution. In this thesis, techniques that combine benefits from both model-based reconstruction methods and regularized reconstructions with prior knowledge are proposed and demonstrated for MRSI.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Fast image reconstruction with L2-regularization

    Purpose We introduce L2-regularized reconstruction algorithms with closed-form solutions that achieve dramatic computational speed-up relative to state of the art L1- and L2-based iterative algorithms while maintaining similar image quality for various applications in MRI reconstruction. Materials and Methods We compare fast L2-based methods to state of the art algorithms employing iterative L1- and L2-regularization in numerical phantom and in vivo data in three applications; (i) Fast Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM), (ii) Lipid artifact suppression in Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Imaging (MRSI), and (iii) Diffusion Spectrum Imaging (DSI). In all cases, proposed L2-based methods are compared with the state of the art algorithms, and two to three orders of magnitude speed up is demonstrated with similar reconstruction quality. Results The closed-form solution developed for regularized QSM allows processing of a three-dimensional volume under 5 s, the proposed lipid suppression algorithm takes under 1 s to reconstruct single-slice MRSI data, while the PCA based DSI algorithm estimates diffusion propagators from undersampled q-space for a single slice under 30 s, all running in Matlab using a standard workstation.     We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
